Default The worst movie ever produced regarding a disco theme?

A month ago I sent out a post knocking the movie 54, so I thought I would check out "The Last Days of Disco", thinking it couldn't possibly be as bad, but I was wrong.

Now, I'm sure there had to be some previous posts to this terrible movie but decided not to go hunting through the archives to find them.

Truthfully, this movie was so horrible! The acting, the story line, and the whole negetive ambiance provoked regarding the time period. There seemed to be a few mistakes in the movie as well. If the movie took place in the early eighties, the clubs back then played mostly 80's disco, not the stuff from 2-6 years ago exclusively. There was not a single mix; and the atmosphere inside the disco, (presumably, 54) was so dull anybody would have tired from disco in the blink of an eye as well. Back then when people were dying to get into 54 it wasn't just because they might catch a glimpse of a celebrity, it was because it really was all that. Imagine, there were people that wasted their money going to see this at the movie theater. Awful! :x

Thx for the review. I've been wanting to see this flick quite badly but now I'll give it a second thought. :D

Yeah, the songs are good...but totally wrong for the time period. When some big crisis happens--they have to throw on the hot record of the moment to calm everyone down---it's "Good Times" from 1979!!! It's supposed to be 1982-83. To be true to the times, they shoulda been playing Lime or Sylvester or Patrick Cowley or....f'ing "Gloria"!!!!

The only song on the soundtrack actually from this era is a brief snippet of "Dolce Vita" by Ryan Paris--NOT played in a club, but in an outdoor scene. :o

The"club" in the movie seemed more of a "Fern Bar" than a "Disco." The music was always played softly in the background so the Yuppies could chatter and chatter and chatter about their lives. :o

I sorta like Whit Stillman's movies (over-educated, sel-indulgent preppies whining about their place in the social heirarchy)--but this ain't a true representaion of any NYC DISCO of that era.

Buy the soundtrack. Skip the movie..UNLESS you like that talk, talk, talk.

In answer to the general theme of this thread, I would say that with the exception of "Saturday Night Fever"...ALL MOVIES set against a disco background SUCKED.

"Thank God It's Friday"
"Can't Stop The Music"
"54"
"Last Days Of Disco"

Except "Boogie Nights". And they only discoed in the early part of that terrific movie.

I can say with confidence that the answer is "Can't Stop The Music". After all, it is the worst movie of all time, disco-themed or not.

Some of the folks on this board aren't all that crazy about "Saturday Night Fever" and that's cool but in my world and where I come from "Saturday Night Fever" is right on the money! No bullshit, no melodrama, straight poop - that movie was us. The ending is melodramatic and Fr. Frank is bullshit but the rest of it NAILS NORTHEAST URBAN YOUTH and Discos! Case closed. That was me and the crew I hung with. Every one of us came from dysfunctional families of one type or another. Just like looking in a mirror!

However, we had one difference; night college saved all of us from the oblivion of Tony Manero but it would have been real easy for us to fall into his trap.

Yeap, "last days of disco " was really weak, but I regret not picking up the DVD cheap when I had the chance, it is OOP now, very hard to get and selling for inflated prices.

I think Gigli ended Can't Stop The Music's 20+-year record of that dubious distinction.

Hey guys! Don't forget "Roller Boogie"! :D Remember Linda Blair dancing in rollerskates to the sound of Earth, Wind & Fire? :P

Actually, I liked "The last days of disco" very much. I know the music doesn't really fit, but the important thing was, yes, the chat chat chat :)

Don't forget the other movies that are considered by many people as Discomovies( :o ): Grease, Xanadu, Urban Cowboy Flashdance and Dirty Dancing. How do they do that??? YUCK!

A movie which I consider as a discomovie is "Summer of Sam". The songs, the atmosphere, the time-evocation.

(Oh yes, Marky, I almost forgot your request: You can buy these movies on E-GAY.)

Not exactly about disco by a long shot but "Summer Lovers" (song: 'Your Love' Lime :D )and "looking for Mr Goodbar" ('Machinegun' Commodores and many others of that era) make good use of the nightlife theme in this movies.

IMO some of the most erotic and/or energetic 'Discos' scenes in recent memory can be found in "Basic Instinct" (Song:La Tour- 'Blue') and "Blade" (forgot?), also check out the German flick "Run Lola Run" for the best use of a 'Dance' sound track (trance).

If you ever Djed in a club the small indie "Trance" flick "Groove" has a few funny Dj moments you may identified with, the music is not bad and even the club 'vibe' is similar to the old days but with different music of course..

Oh, I forgot about "Can't Stop the Music". That was real bad, but at least it wasn't disparaging to disco. And come to think of of it, Steve Guttenburg did have on those tight white pants, with that nice package...

In response to Mixmachine's post, Looking For Mr. Goodbar contained a lot of disco music throughout the movie. Donna Summer's "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It" and "Could It Be Magic", Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way", and some R&B tunes like "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs (crossed over to the R&B chart in the fall of 1976; made Top 10) and "Back Stabbers" by the O'Jays.
