Default ARTIST SPOTLIGHT #11 - SYLVESTER

Sylvester was a big part of disco music's success. When I hear YOU MAKE ME FEEL (MIGHTY REAL) I think of strobe lights, mirror balls & flashing blue, red & green lights in a club.... 8)

Other favorites of mine:

I (WHO HAVE NOTHING)
DO YOU WANNA FUNK
DANCE (DISCO HEAT)

I always liked Do You Wanna Funk the most and not just because I spent 17 hours and received zilch for doing a major amount of the toil on a reworking, back in '88/89. The tempo was ultra right, the screams, the synth lines all added to what was an incredibly solid piece of Disco (after Disco had died, eh?) that packed the dancefloor for ages.

You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) tore up the dancefloor big time and always brings back memories and almost helps me taste that time BITD when it was first hitting the decks. It was a special record.

Dance (Disco Heat) never quite did the same amount of business but I liked it slightly better in some ways.

I first discovered Sylvester on a French television show presented by Guy Lux. Every day at 19.30h they had a little program where they showed a discoclip every night.

Sylvester was wearing a dress with pearls and did "You make me feel" and I was hooked by it. Bought it the next day and after that one he released many excellent records. "Stars/Body strong" is a winner and "Don't stop", "Tell me", "Be with you", "I need you", "Over and over", "Sell my soul" and "Do you wanna funk" were killers but his best song imo still is "I need somebody", which is timeless.

Great artist and both Sylvester and Patrick Cowley left us too soon.

Hey efunk, when i did Sylvester I think I might have picked Dance (Disco Heat). Changed my mind, now I'll go with You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real). Maybe because I've watched too much 54 lately.[/b]

I love "Dance (Disco Heat)", especially the 8:07 version with Martha and Izora exchanging pleasantries with Sylvester.

"You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" keeps me dancing and feeling good. I love the 6:18 version where he does some slight moaning at the end.

"Over And Over" is another great song, reminiscent of Rick James' "You And I" (to my ears).

"I Need You" is another personal fave.

"Stars" has an awesome break and when I close my eyes I see myself riding along a dust storm in no-man's land amid a rush of energy and ecastsy.

"Do You Wanna Funk" is another great song, and he moves into hi-NRG style very nicely.

"Body Strong" (lyrics=you make my body strong...you make my body strong...you make my body strong...you make my body strong...you make my body strong... :D )
"I'll Dance To That" (Sylvester with strings !!!)
Michael Jonzun on "Electro Boogie Encounter" by Jonzun Crew sings with the same Sylvester's voice :D
