Ok I'll agree that this record isn't from the accepted disco period, but it symbolizes something incredibly important within dance music history. It was probably THE record that turned a whole generation onto (a) James Brown and (b) more importantly, Funk as a form of dance music. JB had hits prior to this, but Sex Machine was just about his biggest globally (so far as I know) and it was a different kind of groove to most of his previous stuff. It showed that a record of c. 105 -110 BPM could be danced to and have a fierce dance groove.

It was an absolute monster on the dance floors and truly is a record that we have loved. Discuss, bump it up, bring it down, whatever.

The last time I played this record was at the peak end of a dance set which cleared the floor. damn! :oops: I was thinking f*** I couldn't have picked a worse spot for it.... It's one of those LOVE IT OR HATE IT songs. JB produced some of the funkiest records ever made. If it wasn't for him, I probably would have gone a different direction in musical taste. NOT!!! :P On the other hand, in a good spot or show, you'll usually have one showboater out there doing their thing/shaking their ass off/showing off which would cause everyone around them to rally into a circle. I guess my audience was to white.... :oops: :oops:

I've asked people, why do you not like JB. One of the responses I got was that his voice is annoying... gees!!! :roll:

My first experience with this song when I was very young at the tender age of 8. I was at a picnic on Labor Day. Man it was so fresh. I wanted to get out there and dance.... but, didn't know the first thing about dancing, but my eyes were glued to the outdoor dance floor.

Distinctly remember this as a monster floor jammer in my early clubs.Was one of the first records I learned to mix as it was only available as a 7" with Part 1 and 2 on each side so you would blend as best you could Part 2 towards the end of Part 1 at the point where he yells "can I take it to the bridge".Agree that this record brought on a whole new legion of white fans and started a whole new prolific period of funk offerings from the Godfather of Soul.

Actually, I hit it on the Opening Horn section..... what a learning experience that was.... errrrr!!!!! :oops:

I should've went back to rock or a change up song... I basically had it in a bad spot...

JB is the FUNK MASTER.What a great tune.Everytime i hear it,i dance like a maniac,so is the great power of that tune.I also love a lot "There Was A Time",another fierce and funky tune by JB.
