School days

Back in the mid- to late Seventies during my school days, I was virtually the ONLY one from my whole year into disco and funk music. :sad: There was one guy in the year below who was a disco fan - and that was it. Most people liked progressive rock or new wave.

All of my disco friends (and there were many) I met when I got a weekend job in a supermarket. Happily, they were a great crowd - the best - and we're still in touch ...

I remember one lunchtime coming back from my latest shopping expedition, and slamming Stargard's "What You Waiting For?" on the turntable in the Sixth Form Common Room. The general comments were "What's This Crap?" "Get It Off!". ie it wasn't Led Zeppelin or The Jam. :grin:

Much the same story at University. I was the only disco/funk fan, whilst everybody else was into The Police. This time, though, I was on the roster of Student Club DJs so I was able to educate those non-believers!

Were any of you out there unlucky like me - the only ONES into the music at school etc?? :sad: :sad: Or were all of your school mates into the same music?

PS Even my 12 year old son likes NU-METAL!! :???:

I remember about three weeks ago in school we had to do a fashion presentation which required music to create a mood. So my professor played my Summer of Sam cd. When he played "Running Away", "Don't Leave Me This Way", "Dancin' Queen" and "Let No Man Put Asunder" practically the WHOLE damn class starting saying "oh that is SOOOO old" and "what is that"???? So I responded, "that is real music and its better than the crap that all of you are listening to today"! I also added that most of the music that they're listening to, is sampled from disco or in their words "old music". You should have seen their faces when my professor played "Baba O'Riley" they damn near GAGGED!

There is one girl in my class that likes classic rock (Led Zeppelin, Hendrix) and another who is a die-hard Beatles fan so I have something in common with them. Other than that, the only ones that appreciate disco/funk is the teachers since they are in their late 30s and older.

These kids need to know where the samples came from its original source. With Hip/Hop now running out of samples, the producers are now turning to themes from TV Shows. I just heard an artist from Maryland using the theme from the Jeffersons as a sample.

When I use to go to high school, a few people admit to liking some of the disco classics when I raised the subject although they mainly know "YMCA" and "Stayin' Alive" and most of the ones that Aussie radio stations belt the shit out of. Let's just say I'm about the only one who explores disco further beyond the realm of the mainstream stuff by looking for rare disco that I never heard before.

And yes there are some people who have slammed my taste in disco especially my brothers, they slam my tastes more than anyone else because they have to put up with me playing it all the time hehehehe, but I have to also put up with their farty Eminem crap as well. And there are people that don't want to touch disco with a 50 foot barge poll.

But a lot of people do respect my tastes whether they like the music or not. So only my brothers really give me a hard time about my music.

Now Flatbush's comment about these rappers sampling TV show themes, I've noticed in some dance/hip hop song they sampled the theme to the miserable soap opera "Young & The Restless", can you believe that? To my opinion the theme song sounds rather depressing just like the soap seeing everyone is so serious as I mentioned in my post "Why are American soap operas so serious". I don't watch those soaps but sometimes have seen them when at my mothers friends house and everytime those soaps are on the people are usually acting like a bunch of misery guts being serious, sad or really pissed off. Anyhow that's just my opinion so if any of you like those soaps please don't take as offense. Back to the music, I wonder what soap would be next to be sampled "Days Of Our Lives", "Bold & The Beautiful".

I bet they may even sample the funky bass riffs from the comedy "Seinfeld". But I hope to god they don't sample the theme song from the "Nanny".

Jazz, the same happen to me in my school days. Many of my schoolmates were Led Zeppelin, Black Sabath, Rush...etc. fans!! Only in my neiborhood I found music-mates, a small group of people fan of disco/funk music. It's funny, today is much more easy to find people who like this music than back on that days!!!! Today I have a huge bunch of people to share my passion about black music (specially disco and funk), Thank God! :grin:

I remember back in the 70's, WABC 770 AM in New York was the station to listen to when I was in school. Wings - Goodbye Tonight was popular as an example. If you think soap operas aren't serious, DIRECTV has a 24 hour soap opera channel. This is just in case anyone miss All My Children @ 1:00pm, they can watch it at 8:00pm. This ain't a game with modern technology I remember the Edge of Night scaring me to death with its theme song when it came on when I was younger. The Days of Our Lives theme song was pretty to me back then. I can go on and on, but when a rapper used ABC's Wide World of Sports theme last year, that's when I said "What will they think of next"?

No personal experience with priests in Hicksville, DISKODISC. I'm Lutheran--our ministers just BORED us to death.

Hey, I'm just commenting on the current controversy with the Catholic priests here in the U.S. Everday, someone else comes forward to accuse another priest of molestation. This story has crossed the Atlantic, hasn't it???

24 hours of soaps, oh my god. Do any of the soaps have some light hearted comedy unlike "Days Of Our Lives", "Young & The Restless" and "Bold & The Beautiful"? And is the Australian soap opera "Neighbours" featured on that channel?

Thanks for your interesting answers. Sounds like a lot of you were like me at school - in the minority. Seems like the quality of that music kept us sane ... I always felt at the time, listening to this wonderful American import soul music, that it was right AT THE CUTTING EDGE - far better than all that tired old pop crap etc ...
