yeah, thanks again to marky for all this info.

i poured over these again and one observation i have is that i think by 1984 the billboard dance chart was adversely affected by record company hype. during the disco years, the major labels were reluctant to aggressively market 12"s for fear of cutting into LP and 7" sales, and as disco wained in the early '80s, there were few commercially issued major label 12"s, and those that existed usually went in and out of print very quickly. but starting in 1983, the major labels really got into the business of selling 12"s, and of course they used them to boost the profiles of their rock and r&b acts. by 1984, remix 12"s regularly started appearing on acts that didn't need/deserve/want them, and they were getting hyped into the charts over the import and indie label tracks that were actually getting played but didn't have major label money and muscle behind them. if you were on the scene back then, i'm sure you can think of plenty of much bigger and better tracks that were happening in 1984 than some of the records on the charts that year: LIGHTS OUT - Peter Wolf (ex-j. geils band singer) or BLUE JEAN/ DANCING WITH THE BIG BOYS - David Bowie (not two of his best or even that danceable) or DON'T STAND ANOTHER CHANCE - Janet Jackson (who even remembers this one?) or NEXT LOVE - Deniece Williams (ditto). these are all major acts with records that were from a dancefloor/quality perspective totally minor. dance music in 1984 wasn't as bad as these big-money duds would suggest!

if you need any more convincing, check out the current billboard dance chart.

OK, let's retrieve this and move it up to the front.

Nicky had this in a "sticky" for a long time.

Starsky, please read it this time!!!!!

The Tom Moulton columns have been added to the current Billboard charts that I type weekly.

The 2nd column of old Billboard charts listed on the links above is locked and you have to access it through this link. I couldn't bring it forward on it's own....too much info....we started losing it. I believe there is a continuation of this chart stuff...that I did as a followup...but I have to search more.
