I just discovered an unlikely disco version: Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" by... BONEY M.!!!!

Right at the end of the Nightly Back to Venus LP (1978). I wonder if old hero Young had the idea of his techno album Trans listening to one of these disco versions...

My "best" list is a compilation of everybody else's best and worst lists combined.
I have to admit I love most disco covers unless they get botched beyond all recognition. The one outstandingly horribly bad LP of disco covers ever created was 1978's "Back In Time" (Group name and album title) in which Simon and Garfunkel classics like El Condor Pasa and Sound of Silence get an OK disco instrumental treatment but the lyrics get blurted out in short fast spurts as spoken words not even in time with the music. They did not even give these songs the dignity of being sung!
Viola Wills was the Cover Queen IMO and If You Could Read My Mind is probably my #1 of the genre.
I've just recently discovered Andy William's Love Story and love the overdramatic performance! What disco theatrics!

I stand by my original position i.e. liking most disco versions of crappy old songs (when I was Steely Dan!) but having said that there is one 'D.V.O.C.O.S.' that I cannot stand & that's Arpeggio's 'Runaway'. I like Simon Soussan's other DVOCOS's by Simon Orchestra (I Close My Eyes & Count To Ten) & Jessica Williams (Save The Last Dance For Me) for example but Runaway really irritates me. Oh, & Mighty Pope's version of 'Because The Night' is a little suspect too!

SD,

You just reminded me that your old username was SteelyDan. Would you like me to merge that name with SandraDee so that all your old posts are under one name?

Oh yes please Bernie, that would be great as there are alot of old threads being revamped lately & most people here now will not know me as SteelyDan. You're a star!

Now that you mention this: "In a gaddah-da-vida" was great IMO. So was Al Martino's "Volare"!

The worst? Soeur Sourire's Disco rendition of "Dominique". Even I can't stand that 1! Yes, the clip is on YouTube but I'm refusing to post it

BTW, speaking of nicknames, Steely San well done !

Oh My God! Was this a disco version? I never heard about this one. Sounds like a must-have for Camp Collectors!

Viola's version of Stormy Weather still sounds great.

Paul Parker seemed to become the Cover King. I liked his version of Without Your Love (although it sounded pretty much like Cut Glass.) And even his dance remake of Wicked Game.

Fave remakes:
Give Me Just A Little More Time by Angela Clemmons
MacAurthur Park by Donna Summer
I'm A Man by Macho

I loved his remake of Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time. Interestingly sad but powerful.
