I have a few questions regarding this album and the related singles, which I suspect nobody can answer, but here I go anyway

- Regarding the title track: I have acquired 2 copies of the 7" (one US, one Cnd), and recently the 12" -- which I paid a small fortune for, but it was worth it. Thing is, the version on the album plays slower than any of the singles. Is this a mastering error? And if so, does it affect just that one song, all the songs on that side, or the entire album?

- I got my copy off GEMM. I saw it listed before, supposedly with a lyric insert. Mine doesn't have one, can anyone confirm if one exists?

- Side two opens with "Dry Bones", which to my horror, was the basis for a pet food commercial jingle. That aside, on the label it says "special arrangement", and the track clocks in at over 8 minutes. Was there originally a shorter version of this song?

Graham my 12" copy clocks at 120 BPM, 7" at 121 BPM and the lp at 116 BPM, I do have the lyrics insert, I can email it to you if you'd like, they did a poor job of remixing this 12" extended version, it has a very bad 'train wreck' mix when the instrumental version kicks in,I had forgotten about that, all my copies are realeased on Pyramid/Roulette, this song was played very much at the time but can't say the same for any of the other LP cuts.
I still need to reply to your email, very busy lately.

Oh, please, please, please...

That's one of the things I love about this track. It breaks all the rules. Anti-climatic song structure, doesn't stay in the same key for more than a few bars (except in the instrumental break), interesting lyrical analogy, the train wreck (and awkward fade when the reprise kicks in)...

...it's all so wrong it's right.

I have a copy of the 12" "Sun...sun...sun..." by Jakki. The album is from Jakki or Johnnymelfi? I didn't know there was a LP of it...

The single was released under the name Jak-ki, but the album was released under Johnnymelfi. Strange but true. My thanks go to Jussi for enlightening me on that one.

Gee, thanks for that news, Graham!!!

I thought you were talking about a different song entirely!!!!

So Ja Kki is Johnny Melfi?????? Who knew????

Now I had never heard of "Sun, Sun, Sun" until the last Disco Top 500 voting was taking place and one very amusing guy (I don't think he posts here anymore) went into a tirade cause someone put "Sun, Sun, Sun" as #1 on their list. He FREAKED!!!!!!

He was kind enough to send me an mp3 of it (the first time I'd done anything like that) and I got to hear it. He claimed they couldn't sing and it was awful--I kinda thought it was strange and interesting!!! I think I still have it on my Napster files. I'll have to check. I've never found it on vinyl, though. BUT now I know to look for Johnny Melfi, also.

By the way, if "dennis" is still out there lurking...say "hi" as you cruise by...

Johnnymelfi (note: it's always spelled as one name... weird 70s marketing gimmicks) wrote and produced the single with "Ja-Kki" on vocals. When he finished his own album after, he included the first part of the song on the album, which "guest stars Jakki".

That's my take on it too. Seems this is another one of those tracks that you either love passionately or are completely indifferent to. I love the weird chord progression, the lyrical concept, the anti-climatic song structure, and the overall sound. And then there's the bizarre dubby part in the middle, complete with train wreck -- no need for a drunken DJ.

If you ever see the Pyramid 12", don't hesitate to grab it. Doesn't matter if it's the original promo or the commercial release. It's very sought-after these days, and can go for huge sums of money, especially in Europe. I paid $45 Cnd for my copy.

BTW, Jakki also did one 12" on West End, but I haven't heard it yet.

Graham,

"The weird dubby part in the middle" was exactly what I wrote to "dennis" when I tried to explain my reaction to him. The record has like 3 distinct parts, as I remember. ("dennis" was the guy with the record who sent me the mp3)

I said it was like an early "dub" mix...how bizarre, Grahamark.

Ya know if "they" never find out that we are indeed the same person, we will have pulled off the greatest hoax ever perpetrated here, eh???? "Caroline" is an amateur, I say.

This is new to me, I never known that Jakki was also on a lp. I tryed to find this album in different record sales sites but I was not successful. Does the lp worth having it? I have the 12" from Jakki's Sun...sun...sun.. from PYRAMID Records, the commercial version. On the flip side there's a strange track from Phil Medley called "Snap it", who is he? Is this song on the Johnnymelfi's lp?
I suffered a lot before having Jakki, and finally I found for US$30,00.
And Sun sun sun is one of my favourite tracks, I placed at #16 in my top 25...

Masdefi, this is a very ‘interesting’ Lp, it has a unique sound hard to categorize, side one consist of a three songs segued suite, “ Have a nice weekend’, “Where did it go” “too soon to forget” this suite has some great old Disco passages/changes with string section and all, this Album has a ‘Broadway’ production sound better suited for listening rather than dancing, (not a bad thing) Side two consist of “Dry Bones” “Try, try again” (segued) “Good thoughts” (very nice) and IMO the best cut “Sun..Sun..Sun..” (Part one only), I just finished listening again and it grows on you. If you can find it, pick it up. It will definitely transport you to another musical era.

This is a very sought after record too!!!
It is WES 12101, being the second release on the label.
The track is not unforgettable but on the flip side there is the instrumental version of the wonderful "Mary Hartman Mary Hartman" by Sound of Inner City, a moniker for Vincent Montana & the Salsoul Orchestra
