| There are a number of good dance songs of today that sound close to disco with some resampling but to go with the thread I'll mention what I think sux and there's quite a number of shitcrap remixes. I hear a lot of these twice a day each day at work on that bloody Nova 96.9 station. They are a shit station cos they belt the living shit out of the same set of songs twice a day each day for months and months. They flog that shit song "Roses" by Outkast to death that if it were a rekkerd instead of a CD the grooves would of worn right through and the rekkerd will be nothing but onion rings!!! Thank god my boss is kind enough to let me listen to my portable CD player while working :D ! Firstly commenting on Beyonce Knowles, I'm afraid I HATE her song "Crazy In Love" (I thought was titled "Naughty Girl") , I can't help finding her high pitch voice irritating especially when she goes "sexy.... aaaiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" :x , and the "I love to love you baby" bit was not necessary. Regardless that she may have talent, that song is flogged on Nova 96.9 so many times and the "aaaaaaiiiiiiiiieeeeeee" bit really pisses me off. Ahh comenting on Atomic Kitten's "Be With You", I assume that's the song that the chick sings "really gonna last forever", that song was flogged to death on I98 FM last year and I hate it now. It sucks plumbers crack!!! Ahh another shitty remake is "Sunny" by Boogie Pimps, they remix it in the typical repetitive techno way "I love you you you you you you you" and the song doesn't even change pitch at all, it is shit!!!! I must admit I like their "Want Somebody To Love" song, but this song is poor. Now there's a shitcrap rap song that these two blokes yell in the typical gangster rap way, they resample the riffs of Chic's "Chic Cheer", what a shitty remake!!! Anyways gotta go to work now, I'll mention more shitties of today later. Cheers _______________________________________________ AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!! OI OI OI!!!

| new music versus classic music really crossed my mind yesterday when I watched VH1's broadcast of "Woodstock" (director's cut). This was way back in the pre-computer, pre-sampling days. All the artists played actual musical instruments and were able to move 500,000 people quite easily (esPEcially Sly and the Family Stone) and Joan Baez was brave enough to sing acapella. It's not just that current music is just unoriginal...to me much of it really isn't music anymore either, just sound. |

| There's no doubt that music from twenty and thirty years ago, in regards to dance and disco, was much more original and fresh sounding....skilled artists playing their own instruments and vocals that were truer and unassisted technically. I think there was probably much more enthusiasm, inspiration and excitement created from the group effort on most recordings and performances. Having said that, there still are great dance releases being released weekly. I certainly wouldn't have kept djing all these years if there weren't. I still see the excitement on my dancefloors that I saw twenty years ago. Perhaps part of what I see today are young people emulating dance moves that they've seen on tv and in the movies (not much sincerity there) but within this scenario, I will recognize those excited souls that were born to boogie. These are the people that keep me in the game...the ones who still run up to the booth asking the name of that last song. I recognize that excitement in many of the dance releases as well. Unfortunately, yes, most of the cuts are borrowing samples, but there are many that are cleverly crafted with much creativity to them. There's a new cut out right now called Turn Me On by Dirty Old Ann. Here's a song that's built around samples of the Three Degrees' Dirty Old Man but it's now a totally different song. With strong vocals by Kathy Brown, this a major dancefloor winner created by some dj/ remixer who, no doubt, experienced just as much excitement in the creative process as all those disco pioneers. Take a listen to Chicane's wonderful Stoned In Love (with some original vocals bits by Tom Jones!), Speechless by Mish Mash (the Seamus Haji remix is the best), Bob Sinclar's World Hold On, Lorraine's Transatlantic Flight (7th Heaven mix).....there's so much out there....too much of course. A lot of the problem stems from ego-centric djs who refuse to play songs with vocals...the ones who stubbornly need to 'create' their vibe so then all you get is a four to six hour set of bland dubs and instrumental...and that's when I agree that it's lifeless and unoriginal. Apparantly, words get in the way to these guys....I certainly have a few for them. |

| So umm, I just ordered one of those compilation cds featuring the mixed version of a song Iike, Shake Up The Party. I liked that song the moment I heard it in the movie Boat Trip. This new disco song is the best original dance song I've in some time. Performed by Joy Enriquez, I checked the album where the song came from but the album version was slightly different. I later found the version on a cd called Totally Dance. Anyone familiar with Joy's work?

A more pure Disco song in this Cd is "All I do" by the Cleptomaniacs, now that is modern disco ! unfortunately the cuts are short. |

I never heard of Nancy Martinez. Is she someone you'd reccomend? When I get the Totally Dance cd I'll share my opinion.

| Here's a site with clips of Nancy Martinez' songs. She also performed as Jade on the song "I'm Gonna Get Your Love" Not Just The Girl Next Door: The Nancy Martinez Discography (compiled by Stef) |

One other song that my crowd still requests is You Promised Me by Ingrid. I loved this track the moment I heard it and remember shaking as I mixed it in the first time that I played it (over two years ago) not knowing how the crowd would react to it with it's blatant accordian accompanying her vocals. What a treat! I feel it's very important for us older guys and gals to stay a bit in touch with some of the newer dance music. The ravey, dubby stuff is only part of the scene....same with hiphop and rap. As I've realized, trends in dance music come and go but the majority of the crowds still want good, solid dance beats with something recognizable and unique to the song. |

For Tonight is such a strong, classic track....one of those records that started the night. Move Out was great as well. |

| yeah right...no sampler insight in the 60's when Keith Richards & The Rolling Stones remade all those old blues originals note for note. At least they played every note themselves but how original were The Rolling Stones in the early days?? Who's 'own stuff' does he mean?? Sampling is a contemporary way of 'borrowing' some old and some tried and tested sounds. When done well there's nothing wrong with it, I suppose...as long if credits are given where credits are due...and the result is original... |

| "For Tonight" was first done by Donna Rhodes about a year earlier and I loved it, so it came as a disappointment when I heard Nancy Martinez's version later on. Nancy's is not bad, but after hearing Rhodes version first there was no turning back. Donna Rhode's version was on an LP sampler called "Euro Trax put out by EAMS/PMC and was produced by the same person as Nancy's version, Teneen Ali. Ironically on this same sampler LP is "Caught In the Middle" by Nancy Martinez.
