| Marky, this is very interesting--thanks for putting it together. After reading the Whitburn Disco book, I was left wanting to know more about the Record World DiscoFile chart. I liked it that they only listed one title per ranking rather than "all cuts" or whatever, as was done in Billboard. The Billboard method puts early disco artists at a disadvantage when ranking them against the current crop, who only release one song at a time. So they get more titles listed and more points! Although I guess it would get a bit muddy what with medleys such as "Arabian Nights" or suites such as "MacArthur Park."

Also, Al Green, Undisputed Truth, Hot Chocolate, Jones Girls, Earth, Wind & Fire, Frankie Valli, Three Degrees, First Choice, Barrabas, Barry White, Ramsey Lewis, Dionne Warwick(e), Lonnie Liston-Smith and Bohannon...Bohannon...Bohannon!!!! DISCO ACTION by Tom Moulton 2/22/75 (New York) - There will definitely be a Trammps LP on Golden Fleece (distributed by Columbia) in March. It will have "Where Do We Go From Here," "Shout," "Trusting Heart," Love Epidemic" (longer version) and two other cuts, including "Stop And Think." After so many rumors about a new album for so long, it is hard to believe that the "most wanted LP" on the disco scene is finally coming. (Tom was responsible for mixing this LP) Most controversial record this week is "I Was Born This Way" by Valentino on Gaiee Records on which a young man sings about his homosexuality, how happy he is and how others put him down because they don't understand. Feelings on the disk are mixed, as some think it is offensive; others feel it is a great cut. Without a doubt it's a strong disco record, as everything begins with a drum, bass and tambourine and by the time you get into the lyrics, everyone is on the floor dancing. As to clubs already playing it, their reaction is that the rhythm is so stong, no one has gotten into the words as yet. :( Downstairs Records here is getting some strong reaction to the Sir Wales Wallace disk "Whatever You Want" on Innovation 2, and the Odia Coates single, "Showdown." Al Green's new single on Hi, "L-O-V-E," could be a disco hit, with a stronger rhythm than his last winner and more melodic, with the same easy, soulful Al Green delivery. Sunny, the British girl who had the original hit of "Doctor's Orders," has a new single on Epic, "Headline News." This is a much stronger disk than her last one and will make some news in the discos. "Disco Gold," a new Scepter LP is almost complete. It will have long versions of: "We're On the Right Track" Ultra High Frequency (6:10) "Make Me Believe In You" Patti Jo (7:03) :D :D :D :D "Wan-Tu-Wah-Zuree" George Tindley (5:12) "I Love You Yes I Do" The Independents (4:45) "Dreamworld" Don Downing (4:43) plus three other cuts. The songs will be together, disco-style, and the album will be available in March. (Tom was responsible for remixing/extending these tracks-- strangely, "Dreamworld" did not make it on the final LP) RCA has just released "You're My Only World" by The 21st Century and it's a good up-tempo pop/soul record. Also being released is a new single by The Choice Four from it's forthcoming album. And word is that Satyr's "Free and Easy" may still come out this month. So many people are aware of this disk--it has the "Never Can Say Goodbye/Doctor's Orders" sound--that RCA may schedule it even though the label's singles roster reportedly is filled.

| Wow Marky. No praises this time. Wouldn't want your head to get swollen. :) OK, perhaps a correction for ya. BEST OF MY LOVE - Eagles, should the artist be the The Emotions? HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN MELLOW has a question mark. Any reason? I love that song by the way :) As I've said before, seeing these list takes be back to a wonderful time...ahhh 8) Glad to see Kokomo will be coming soon.

It was indeed the Eagles, not the Emotions (they come later) ....the "?" was typed only because "Have You Never Been Mellow" is a question..(maybe it wasn't technically listed in the song title...just adding "the grammar"!!!)

This book was edited by veteran rock critic Dave Marsh and features his opinions as well as other critics from RS. Remember, this is "DISCO" from a ROCK critic's viewpoint. He's sometimes totally dismissive, sometimes totally hateful, sometimes totally deadon in his appraisals. I'm gonna feature some of his opinions here from week to week: since they debut this week...... SILVER CONVENTION "Silver Convention is a premier example of tightly formularized disco that works. Their sound is precison tooled, by the German team of Michael Kunze, Stephen Preager and Sylvester Levay, from a design first sketched on Gloria Gaynor's Never Can Say Goodbye. Silver Convention's sound-alike big hits "Save Me," "Get Up and Boogie" and "Fly, Robin, Fly" - are typical of almost all their records. Cunning chants are repeated endlessly over a metronomic funk mechanism greased carefully by strings and hooted along by an occasional sax solo. The whole operation is modest, clean and pleasantly functional. The vacancy of Silver Convention's three vocalists: Penny McLean, Ramon Wolf and Linda Thompson (later replaced by Rhonda Heath), who invariably sing in unison with all the style of distracted typists, suggests the singing-along of disco dancers themselves, and it may well be the key to the group's success in creating aural presence. Although no one would want to own more than one of their LPs, Silver Convention's earlier singles collections Silver Convention and Save Me, contain their best work. The songs, of course, are virtually identical, creating a kind of meta-single......" Then Miss Odia Coates' entry: "Any black singer whose first album carries an endorsement from Paul Anka is interesting, if only as as convincing argument against natural rhythm." OUCH!!!!! ______________________________________________ DISCO ACTION by Tom Moulton March 1, 1975 (New York)- Once or twice a year a record comes out of left field and creates a lot of excitement and sales. "Highway Driver," featuring the German rock group Randy Pie, on Polydor, could be one of those disks. Best way to describe the group is to say they combine the earthy soul sound of Rare Earth, the haunting melodic qualities of The Moody Blues and the excitement of Three Dog Night--an unusual combo, but together it works. From start to finish the disk has a pulsating, soulful drive that makes you want to play it again and again. Dionne Warwicke has a strong disco cut called "Take It From Me" (up-tempo, very Philly-sounding) on her new "Then Came You" LP... "The Fabulous Trammps" LP by The Trammps, due out the end of the month, will also have the "Trammps Theme" on it (another "TSOP"). Midland International (RCA) has released the German soul group Silverbird's (sic) single of "Save Me" (part one) and "Save Me Again" (part two, longer version). It has the discos excited and was the top disco seller in it's first week at Downstairs Records. With Carol Douglas ("Doctor's Orders") also in it's stable, Midland's turning out to be a good disco label. Arista has picked up the master on Tamiko Jones's "Touch Me Baby" (Atlantic Records). Response is starting to show for its soft soul/jazz sound that the discos speed up to work at the clubs. .... Columbia is going to release a longer, hotter version of The Manhattan's upcoming single, "That's How Much I Love You". The song has a much stronger rhythm feel than the LP version and is geared more to the discos. "The Players" had it's grand opening Feb. 13 in Union City, N.J. and well-known New York DJ Steve Santoro had the place jumping. With disco action set weekly from Thursday-Sunday, club owners Gabe Vigorito and Danny Lamego will spotlight Latin music every Thursday, with Joe Cuba the leadoff guest. Both feel an upsurge in Latin disco popularity, noting Herbie Mann's "Hijack" (No. 1 disco record in N.Y.) and Joe Bataan's "The Bottle." They plan to give the disco-goer an opportunity to dance to and see some of the best Latin/soul groups in action. |
