I'll ask you the same question I asked DiscoDisk about the Philly Devotions cut, "Hurt So Bad", on the Spirit of Philadelphia CD: What is the length of "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" on the Lost Soul CD? I'd like to know because the 45 single was an a-side vocal, b-side instrumental affair. Like to know what they put on the comp. Also, I could be mistaken but from what I remember of this single it was anything but thin. Surprised this doesn't reach you. Both this and 'HSB' were just awesome and I can still feel the instrumentals shaking the walls at The Gallery. :D |

| Hi Nicky, I just happen to have "Lost Soul " with me today. "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" is 3:10 in length. Maybe it's me...but I'd give it a C+ to B- grade; pleasant but unmemorable. But I guess I be in da minoritee.

| i figured out something about tavares "my ship" - turns out it was the b-side to one of their early ballad hits, "remember what i told you to forget." i guess the store charting it must've thought people were buying it for "my ship," which seems a little odd, particularly since it doesn't appear on the club play list, and because radio was playing the other side. maybe they were playing this side to customers, or maybe some stations were playing this side as well. or maybe someone reporting for the store was simply cheating a bit! anyway, i also discovered that "my ship" is included on the UK tavares collection The Greatest Hits, which has a higher ratio of uptempo tracks than the compilations that have appeared in the USA - not surprising! |

I'll try to find Oliver Sain and give it a listen. I see he has some compilations available. Never hoid o'him afore. sfbeary, "My Ship" only charts for one week and then disappears. I was gonna cite the utter unpredictability of Melody Song Shops (it seems like someone new or maybe a different location compiled the chart each week cause they are the most inconsistent)...but now I see it was on the Downstairs chart. Hmmmm... Well more charts tomorrow...I've completed the next 2 weeks...will try to type em up tomorrow afternoon.

DISCO ACTION - Tom Moulton 2/8/75 (New York)-- A discogoer in Chicago has a good variety of clubs to choose from these days, including such spots as Our Den (capacity 1,000 people); The Bistro (500 capacity); Sunday's Bombay Bicycle Club, Faces ,The Rhinoceros, The Buttery, Dugan's Bistro and The Hang-Up. Artie Feldman, disk jockey at Our Den, reports that his Top 10 disco disks are: "DOCTOR'S ORDERS" - Carol Douglas "GET DANCIN'" - Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes "EXPRESS" - B.T. Express NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE" - Gloria Gaynor "SOUTH AFRICAN MAN" - The Bohannon Band "HIJACK" - Herbie Mann "THAT'S THE KIND OF LOVE I'VE GOT FOR YOU" - Rita Jean Bodine "SATIN SOUL" - (Love Unlimited Orchestra/ Gene Page) "BLUE EYED SOUL" - Carl Douglas and "SHAME, SHAME, SHAME" - Shirley & Company. Notably, whenever Feldman goes on a new record he always makes a point of introducing the label and artist, so that his dancing audience will be familiar with the disk. Other DJs in town include Louie, the Bistro; David Lawrence, The Rhinoceros, and Danny DJ at Dugan's Bistro.....As in other markets outside of New York, Chicago spinner complaints are similar when it comes to availability of product: they don't have it. Roulette Records has two disco records coming out soon: "Helplessly" by Moment Of Truth and "Dance, Dance, Dance" by The Final Touch. Both records are strong uptempo songs. Also coming soon is the new Ecstasy, Passion & Pain single. ("One Beautiful Day") Philadelphia International is releasing the new Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' "To Be True" LP this week. The strongest cut is "Bad Luck" which is 6:29 and it is more in the "TSOP" groove. It is a much stronger disco record than their current single.   Chess/Janus will be releasing an edited version of the former number one disco song "I'll Be Holding On" by Al Downing. and deleting a long disco-mix version. The label feels the public should be able to buy the same version that it hears on the radio even though the new promotion copies are the long version with the flip side the edited version. What will be the answer when a radio station plays the long version and it is not available? WPIX, WWRL and WRLS here are playing the longer version. (Tom mixed the longer version). |

King (formerly with the Drifters; as solo artist charted "Spanish Harlem" & "Stand By Me" in 1961) Coming Attractions: In future weeks, records by Dawson Smith, Valentino, Odia Coates (she had Anka's baby, remember?) . Silver, Platinum & Gold, Wisdom, City Limits, Choice Four, Variations, 21st Century, Chapter Three, Philadelphia Flyers, Isis (Lesbians if I remember correctly!!!), Randy Pie, Lily Fields and a group from Europe named "Siverbird"--until the name is changed...... DISCO ACTION - by Tom Moulton 2/15/75 New York) Mike Cappello, Le Jardin disk jockey here, will travel to Los Angeles for the NARM convention to spin records at a "Tommy" (the Ken Russell movie of The Who rock opera) disco being set up at the Century Plaza Hotel. It's all part of a Polydor campaign behind the release of the cast soundtrack album from the film "Tommy." Richie Pampianelli of the Hippopotomus is getting strong reaction to the new Isis single "Bobby & Maria" (Buddah). The disk, which has a part II instrumental on the flip side, was produced by Jeff Lane of B.T. Express fame. Ronald Coles, nighttime disco product expert at Colony Records here, is getting a lot of complaints from customers on the Al Downing "I'll Be Holding On" single. (Tom's rant continues...is this the third time he's mentioned this? Remember, Tom mixed the long version....) It seems customers want the longer version and want to know why they can't buy it. Coles says the store has gotten a number of returns on the disk because, customers say, they thought they were originally purchasing the longer record. The shorter version does carry a disco mix tag line on it.   Peter Frost of Canada Record Sales in Toronto, Ontario, is starting to get calls for the Crystal Grass album. It seems that several clubs in Toronto have already gotten the LP from France--the only place where it's commercially available--and have caused a strong groundswell for the record. The LP is very much like an MFSB album, and has several strong cuts on it. There are no immediate plans to release it in the U.S. or Canada. Scepter Records is going to release a disco-mix of Don Downing's lastest single "I'm Not Lovin'." It has not been decided yet if the record will be released commercially or just given out for discotheque use. Washington (part II): The town has 10 discos with permanent DJs, including Pier 9, DJ Mitch Schantsky; Grand Central, with Chuck spinning; Sundown. Bob Evans DJ; and Lost & Found, Frannie as DJ. Capacities for the four spots, considered the tops locally. are Pier 9 (2,000); Grand Central (1,400); Lost and Found (900) and Sundown (600). They are more into the soul/pop sound and have predominately white audiences. A Top 10 consensus from the clubs: "SHAME, SHAME, SHAME" "E-MAN BOOGIE" "REACH OUT" "YOU'RE THE SONG I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO SING" "CRYSTAL WORLD" "HEY GIRL, COME AND GET IT" "WHERE IS THE LOVE" "GLASS HOUSE" "PAIN RELIEVER" AND "BLUE EYED SOUL". The new Ecstasy, Passion & Pain release on Roulette is "One Beautiful Day." Being released this week, the record is similar to "I Wouldn't Give You Up." Aso new on Roulette is "Helplessly"--Moment of Truth's followup to "Your Love." The record has a part 1 (3:27) and a part II (5:10) , and both sides are strong disco potentials. Casablanca Records is rush releasing one of the top disco singles from England--"Run & Hide" (parts I & II) by local English group the Philadelphia Flyers. The song has a strong up-tempo rhythm, and has a "Back Stabbers' sound. It sounds like it could have been cut in Philly. |

| DD: I'm listening to the Shrill & Tinny Devotions as I type. Sorry to send your blood pressure skyrocketing!!! I think it's because it was a low-budget production from an indie that it sounds less sonically perfect as compared to the Thom Bell & Gamble-Huff productions of this time. It's fine--just not a fave. And don't knock my pink Barbie dansette record player!!! It ROCKS!!!! :P :P :P BTW, I'm LOVING that Essential 70s MODERN SOUL Classics volume 1!!!! What a teriffic compilation. Nothing "Shrill & Tinny" on there!!! Rhessel, Check your watch!!! Uh, there's an HOUR and 15 minutes between those 2 posts. (21:10 til 22:25) I wish I could crank out one of those in 15 minutes!!!! I'm not a great typist and I keep making mistakes and typing all those numbers can get tedious!!! But it's worth it.

Is that all there was? Just curious if there was a longer version on the LP or something?) 23) GIVE ME YOUR BEST SHOT - BABY - Ebb Tide (Sound Gems 45) (5/B) (#21) 28. THEME FROM AIRPORT 1975 - The Ventures (UA 45) (2/B) (#24) (all I recall about this flick is that sorta cross-eyed Karen Black had to single-handedly land that damn plane after the pilots were stricken with something!!! My fave reference to "Airport 1975" was in that late 70s gay Canadian film "Outrageous" with Craig Russell. Craig was a female impersonator and one of his pals in the movie looked like Tim Conway. They were going to a Drag Ball and the Tim Conway-looking guy dressed as a stewardess: Karen Black in "Airport 1975" so he said. He pulled the ends of his blonde wig out and shook his head and sobbed "I can't land this plane; I can't land this plane"...or something like that!!!) TOOOOOOOOOOOO FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNEEEEEE.

| 13) MY LITTLE LADY - Bloodstone (London 45) (14/BC) (#26) falsetto vocal, very bouncy, fluffy, catchy, and to-the-point. another one in the "rock the boat" mold. probably the best and poppiest track from bloodstone besides "natural high." included on *the very best of bloodstone* and bloodstone's *essentials*. 17) * LOOK BUT DON'T TOUCH - Donny Beaumont (Mercury 45) (9/B) (NEW) don't know this beaumont one. 19) * I'M NOT LOVIN' - Don Downing (Roadshow 45) (8/BC) (NEW) grrrrreat! almost as strong as "dreamworld" and in a similar style. single has vocal on one side, instrumental on the flip. never on lp, probably not on cd either. 20) * WHAT EVER YOU WANT - Sir Wales Wallace (Innovation 2/Warner Bros) (7/C) (NEW) don't know this one. 22) CRYSTAL WORLD - Crystal Grass (French IMPORT; NOT available in the U.S.) (5/A) (#25) (curious to know the timing on this track: I have it on one of those bootleg "Loft Classsics" vinyl deals--no info except the title; I timed it last night and got approx. 4:35. Just curious if there was a longer version on the LP or something?) you have the lp version on that boot. that's as long as it gets. 23) GIVE ME YOUR BEST SHOT - BABY - Ebb Tide (Sound Gems 45) (5/B) (#21) more mid-tempo male harmony, more philly/nyc-styled proto-disco soul. and i quote: "give me your woo-hoo-hoo!" another grrrreat one, although if you don't like philly devotions . . . pt 1/pt 2 7", pt 1 included on an early rare promo mercury 12" various disco artists ep (mercury soon released this 7"). never on lp, don't think it's ever been on cd. 28. THEME FROM AIRPORT 1975 - The Ventures (UA 45) (2/B) (#24) the only version i've heard of this is only two minutes long. it sounds like exactly what it is - a full-on symphonic disco arrangement of a mid-'70s film theme with a guitar playing the melody. cheesy, but cute. it might have been on one of their more extensive cd collections. hope this helps!! |
