Why DD...before you asked the question I was planning to mention that Marc Copage played Diahann Carroll's son on "Julia"--notable for being the first U.S. series with a black leading lady.

I'be be curious for your takes on the 3 retail stores that comprise the Billboard retail sales charts.

1) Downstairs Records (Manhattan)
2) Colony Records (Manhattan)
3) Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)

What was their clientele like? Selection of records like? Where would you go first for the hottest record you heard last night? Differences? Similarities? Is Melody more suburban?; more radio oriented than club oriented? They seem to feature more of the pop/r&b hits than the others.

Combing over their charts I'm seeing similarites and disparities between the 3 outlets. Just looking for testimony from those who were there.

I am curious Marky
This may be a tough question for 'em Marky. Like a lot of major cities, there were tons of records stores scattered throughout the city. Living and shopping for records in Boston, Hartford, and to a lesser extent NYC my memory tends to blur all of them together.

Oh yeah DD, I'm sharp as a razor!!!! :P When you seem to have the catalog numbers for every 45 released from 1960 -1979 memorized!!!

"Julia" was a 1/2 hour filmed sitcom...produced by Danny Thomas's company, I think. Diahann was Emmy nominated I think...but I don't think she won, cause I recall hearing that when Isabel Sanford died recently, that she was the first black actress to win an Emmy for a lead in a sitcom ("The Jeffersons").

Default Soul/RnB charts

Hi Marky - good qusetion on those record stores in NYC -As a Brit, they are well known on paper only,......hope someone fills in the missing info.

Now, during my copying exploits in the Library of Billboard mags I seemed to notice quite afew tunes that were around in Disco's, that either broke first in the Soul charts of Billboards mag. Or never appeared in the Disco chart but only stayed in the Soul chart.
Have you noticed this as well ? or is it my imagination ?(I know you have taken on a mammoth task alreday, but just wanted to check the reaction).

Also, as far as the RnB charts you put up, I can't remember seeing them specifically in BB, unless they were only for early years ? 1974/75 ?
I thought they were amalgamated into the Disco charts ?

(One more point, I have the RnB sinlges book by Joel Whitburn, as it was the first out - and some of the songs you claim are not in the Disco book may be in this RnB book.)

It is all down to some hacks wanting to put songs into strict 'boxes', which we know can't really be done. !

There is now a 'sticky' thread at the top of this forum that contains your charts. I think I found them all. If not, let me know. :)

DISCO ACTION by Tom Moulton (1/18/75)

(New York) -- "Hijack" by Herbie Mann is getting strong reaction in local discos. While it's a cover of the Barrabas LP cut, the Mann version is stronger and brighter sounding. The "Barrabas" LP itself will not be available in the U.S. until March.

United Artists Records has given a number of test pressings of Vernon Burch's "I'll Be Your Sunshine" LP to several club DJs here. Strong cuts on the LP include "Ain't Gonna Tell Nobody", "Changes" and "I'll Be Your Sunshine."

Burch, who started out as a member of the Barkays and then went on to play lead guitar on Isaac Hayes' "Shaft," is 19. He writes his own material and, after listening to the entire album, many people would probably think that they were hearing Stevie Wonder. United Artist says that they will rush-release the LP if initial reactions here are strong. Early indications point to favorable responses toward the record.

Alston Records, a division of T.K. Productions, has what appears to be a big disco hit with "Where Is The Love" by Betty Wright. The cut is from her "Shoorah, Shoorah" LP. Richard Pampianelli of the Hippopotamus and David Rodriguez of the Limelight both say their audiences are responding strongly to the song. Reports from other local clubs are favorable as well.

"Don't Worry About It" by Jimmy "Bo" Horne (Alston) has been available here for a week, and has started receiving action at the retail level, mainly from disco DJ sales. The record goes well with "Shame, Shame, Shame" and has the same soulful sound.

Scepter Records executive Mel Cheren and Media Sound's Jose Rodriguez report that the Puerto Rican disco sound is in a healthy state of affairs. There are 10 clubs in the San Juan area, with four discos--The Abbey, Otello's, El Indoro and Leonardo's--leading the way.

The Abbey, Raymond Sasso as DJ and Otello's, Ramon Martinez as DJ are located in Old San Juan and are popular tourist spots. Clubs catering to the lcoal residents include El Indoro and Leonardo's, both in the Condado Beach area.

According to Sasso & Martinez, the 10 most popular disco records on the island are" "Get Dancin' " by Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes; "Doctor's Orders" by Carol Douglas; "Blue-Eyed Soul" by Carl Douglas" "I'll Be Holding On" by Al Downing; "Express" by B.T. Express; "Satin Soul" by Gene Page; "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas; "African Symphony" by Van McCoy; "Hey Girl Come & Get It" by the Stylistics and "Each Morning I Wake Up" by Major Harris.

Melody Song Shops creates considerable drama once again:

Melody drops "Shame, Shame, Shame" (#1 A) (#2 B) (#3 C)--probably would have stayed #1 overall if it had been on #D also.
Melody decides to chart "Lady Marmalade" #2 & "What Can I Do For You" #1 instead of bundling the two together as has been done every other week--BUT #B drops it altogether --so it doesn't exceed the 60 point maximum -- yeah, I'm ANAL!!!! :P

LP Cuts usually rate highest on the #A Chart - Gloria Gaynor & Jimmy Castor (the later is avail to DJs only)

Biggest Leaps: "Hijack" from #18 to #1 in 2 weeks!!!
"The Bottle" from #24 to #8
Biggest Debut: "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" - Philly Devotions (the first time a record here has debuted on all 4 charts the same week (#10, #4, #5, #10 respectively) to debut as #6 overall.

DISCO ACTION - by Tom Moulton
January 25, 1975

(New York) Kool & the Gang's new single on De-Lite "Spirit Of The Boogie" backed with "Jungle Boogie" (Instrumental version) will be introduced in Europe when the group appears at MIDEM.

The disk will be released in Europe in conjunction with the group's appearances in England, Germany and France. U.S. release is not slated as of yet. The instrumental version of "Jungle Boogie" was recorded a year-and-a-half ago, but was never released.

Also on De-Lite, scheduled for release on Jan. 28 is "I Have Always Had You" by Benny Troy. A number of DJs are aware of this record as the "Burmingham Song" because the first line in the record is about leaving Burmingham. (Does he mean Birmingham????!!!!)

Buddah is releasing the "Futures" album this week, "Castles in the Sky" which has four disco cuts: "Ninety Days," "Don't Close The Book," " Do Unto Others" and "Castles In The Sky" which is a seven minute cut. Also being released is the Bobby Wilson medium tempo single "Deeper and Deeper" with a Barry White type of sound. The label also has "N'Zoumba" by Christian Carabasa (the French Barkley single) coming out this week.

Joe Bataan's album "Afrofilipino," on Salsoul has been well received. Douglas Riddick of Opus One received a test pressing and is getting good reaction to "X-Rated Symphony" and "Chico And The Man" which were recorded expressly for the discos.

Spring Records will be releasing, in late February, "Bumpin and Stompin" by Garland Green, a strong uptempo, foot stompin' party record that will be a very strong disco entry. And "The Carol Douglas Album" by Carol Douglas will be released in mid-February.

Never really gave it a listen in several years--Then this week, I did a search on allmusic.com for that title and I saw I already had it!!! I pulled it and listened; doesn't ring any bells. I need to tape it and let it work it's magic on me in the car.

:D

Now take a look at this list of "LPs" - almost a dream team of records. Even the weakest of the pack are better than 90% of the pop music made today, don't you agree? At least the guys that made these records knew how to SING. My favorites of the list? AL GREEN'S EXPLORE YOUR MIND is a masterpiece, my favorite record from the reverend and the best of them all. LAMONT's BLACK BACH is superb, and I can say the same for the THREE DEGREES, BLACKBYRDS, AWB and BARRY WHITE albums.

zeca azevedo, sing with me now: "I wish those days-could-come back once more-why did those days-eee-ver- have to go-cause I love them so" :D
