i managed to get one-and-a-half (!) of the records mentioned earlier

this was from discodisk:

16 i feel a big one [comin'on] - leonard [lil man] kaigler
i have this, but where i clubbed we played the other side 'you got me believing in you [dreamin bout you] sunburst was a nice label and i loved this record ,but its another kiddie one, nice uptempo dancer and worth looking out for not available on c.d as far as im aware, and as far as i remember 'believing' was a much better side but i gotta go check it especially with a title like that will report back on this when i find it

this is a great one! the a-side is VERY VERY VERY jackson five - the lil' man bit must refer to the fact that leonard sounds pre-pubescent. the flip side is much faster and also good - i can imagine why the "northern" [uk] clubs favored this side.

i also got the garry bonner - well, i got the wrong half. i guess the b-side "baby, baby" was the dance cut, but the a-side is a HIDEOUS schlocky ballad very much in the style of dan fogelberg - YUCK YUCK YUCK - i bought it mail order and specified that i need a copy with both sides, but they sent a promo with the a-side (which, oddly enough, was a minor AM hit) on both sides. it's produced by bob ezrin, who also produced lou reed, alice cooper, and peter gabriel, among others, so it's got some money behind it, but the a-side is sooooooooooo bad it would take some convincing for me to work at finding this again without a major recommendation. at least the seller is crediting me for my $5 on a future sale and i don't need to send it back because he acknowledges it was his mistake. i'd love to send it flying out the window, but i live in a heavy traffic era.

OK, it's January 4, 1975--a milestone date for me--I just flew from frigid Eau Claire, Wisconsin to live in sunny San Francisco, California. Brrrr...it was cold in SF too...BUT NOT 30 degrees below zero!!!! :P This was a wonderful time for me to discover disco music and other things!!! :D

Billboard published the Top 50 Disco records of 1974 on this page this week ...so for space reasons they list only 4 Top 10 charts instead of the usual 15 per chart. That leaves us with a total of only 21 items instead of the usual 30+.

4 charts with 10 items apiece. 15 points for a #1; 6 points for a #10; 60 points max. Add them up and voila!....THE COMPILATION CONSENSUS!!!!!!

Very little "Consensus" this week; only 1 record "Shame, Shame, Shame" on all 4 charts , making it the #1 "Consensus" record even though it's not #1 on any of the 4 individual charts.

Next week the charts expand back to normal and we get 31 items and the first tie for #1. :D

(I'm gonna take a break now and type that next chart today also)

& #24 "Philadelphia" which keeps comin' & goin' & comin' back.

Notes & Random Thoughts:

32 items (up from 21 last week)
1st tie for #1 : Both have 51 points and are on all 4 charts; "I'll Be Holding On" is #1 on 2 charts while "Shame, Shame, Shame" is #1 on one chart)
5 records on all 4 charts (only 1 last week) : Both #1's, 3, 6 & 8

Chart #4 (D) --Melody Song Shops is the wildcard here; it always shakes the final results up with titles the others don't list.

Moulton's chart (A) always has some titles that don't seem to crossover to the sales charts and he keeps listing songs after they've peaked on the sales charts--obviously cause people are still dancin' to 'em.

Charts B & C in Manhattan (Downstairs & Colony) usually have the most items in common that somehow don't make it to Moulton's A list.

Hmmmm....most interesting.

(Oops, I forgot to add the Moulton column!!!!)

Disco Action by Tom Moulton
w/e 1/11/75

(New York) Gloria Gaynor autographed a number of test pressings of her LP "Never Can Say Goodbye" and gave them out as Christmas presents to disco DJ's here. It seems that she had wanted to show her appreciation in some way for all the help they have given her when word got back about DJ's wanting the LP for the Christmas & New Year's holiday prior to it's release.

Atlantic Records is rush-releasing two disco records in the New York area--"Supernatural Thing" by Ben E. King and "Hijack" by Herbie Mann. Both records are already getting heavy disco play. "Hijack" is a cover record of the "Barrabas" LP cut which is not available in this country yet (Spain only). The single is 5:32, and from what the djs are saying about it, Herbie Mann is going to have a disco monster.

Joe Bataan, who had moderate success in discos with "Latin Strut," has cut a record geared expressly for the clubs. It's an instrumental version of "The Bottle." Bataan personally brought test pressings around to most of the New York discos and the reacton is very good. Stores here are already selling it and it has been out less than a week.

"Let's Get into Something" by the Richmond Extension on Polydor will be released sometime in late January. There are about 10 clubs that already have a test pressings of the record. It is in the same vein as "Hey Girl, Come And Get It" by The Stylistics. This is the fourth record to capture the "Rock The Boat/Rock Your Baby" sound, and judging from audience response this sound is going to be around for a long time.

"Happy People" by The Temptations is starting to happen in several clubs, the Hippo, La Jardine and Soho...WVBF-FM, number two rocker in the Boston market, will have a weekly disco hour, which will feature not only the disco music of the day, but live interviews with local disco DJs on what is happening in their clubs and the problems they are having, if any. Also, there will be interviews with some of the top disco stars from different parts of the country--some live and some on tape. The show bows in late January. There will be interviews with DJs in other parts of the country from time to time.

Although this is not the first station to have a disco show, this is the first station to have interviews with local and out of town disco DJs, plus the interviews with the top disco stars. Ron Robin, a leading disk jockey with the station will do the show. He says that there are a number of stations in the area that have played disco hits and that he himself plays three nights a week at different discos in the Boston market.

He feels that the music of the disco is best performed in the discos themselves, and the whole idea of the show is not to compete with them, but to give people an inside view of the club scene--what makes discos what they are; how their audiences react and how the disco stars themselves feel about the scene.

Hey Fella's
Firstly Well done to MarkyD
I got thro' all of the listings here last night, and it is absoultely awesome !!
I have been spending a fortune going to the Library in London UK copying BB articles and charts.
Now MarkyD actually types them....Good Work Fella !

You are the 'conduit', helping us understand the History of Disco. People like you are holding the future DJ's/collectors/fans and readers in the palm of your hands - If it gets tough going, Remember what you are typing-up is going to stand them in good stead and shape the future Disco world !!
*Bernie upgrade this guy immediately

Well done also to DD -I too am from the'pool, so watch out Quinny there are two of us now :
I will add some interesting snippets from the UK Disco charts if anyone is interested ?

I went out a few months ago and got the UK discs of Al Downing and Don Downing - brand new from a little record shop that still stores old 7" - brand new !!
Obviously the main hits Rock your baby/Rock the boat etc.. are all gone, but little nuggets still pop up.....I will update you if interested when I happen on some of these 'nuggets' ?

I too read the Tim Lawrence book (LSD), and I have met him, a REAL nice guy. The Original Conduit !
One day he and MarkyD, with Bernie could be as famous as David Mancuso for keeping the dream alive ??

Keep up the good work...

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the kind words, Starsky. FYI, I've been typing stuff about the Billboard charts for a number of years. If ya do a search, you'll find a column of all the Number One Disco/Dance Records from 1974 - 1984....it's somewhere in the archives. Then I did all the year-end Billboard Disco lists...that is found somewhere around page #55 of this section of the forum. I spent a long time searching for them last weekend. I don't know how to do searches here. Nicky, help me!!!!! :D

If you go back to the start of this thread where I ask Nicky for links to the Moulton Columns (typed last year) and the Billboard charts I'd typed previously...you'll find them in his reply. Just click on the link he's provided and you can see the past stuff.

FYI, I'm typing this from copies of the charts that I obtained from a guy who was offering them some time back. I don't think this stuff is reprinted anywhere else on the web.

It's heartening to know people are interested in this stuff. Thanks again. :D

shootyourshot,

Thanks for your contributions. It will be interesting to see how these records are doing as crossover items on the pop charts. I'm also gonna need your help with some items that aren't on my copies of the Disco charts. The final listings (#15s) on some pages are cut off on my copies in some future charts, so I'd appreciate your help in determining what those items were. I'll pm you with what I need later. It's a few weeks down the line....and if ya have the continuations of the Moulton columns when they go to another page, that would be great also.

DD,

Yes, I was quite the innocent little St. Olaf child goin' to the wicked city back on January 3, 1975.. But ya know, all these years later, I think there's still more St. Olaf in me today than the sophisticated decadence I was exposed to in California. Go figure.
_______________________________________________
Oh, and I added the Tom Moulton column to the January 11, 1975 chart above on this page. I forgot to do that yesterday.

Paging the current & former New Yawkahs!!!! (Nicky, Boodi, Barry, etc.) :D

I'be be curious for your takes on the 3 retail stores that comprise the Billboard retail sales charts.

1) Downstairs Records (Manhattan)
2) Colony Records (Manhattan)
3) Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)

What was their clientele like? Selection of records like? Where would you go first for the hottest record you heard last night? Differences? Similarities? Is Melody more suburban?; more radio oriented than club oriented? They seem to feature more of the pop/r&b hits than the others.

Combing over their charts I'm seeing similarites and disparities between the 3 outlets. Just looking for testimony from those who were there.

I am curious Marky

Hi starsky,

Find my post on Page 1 of this thread. The links are there because Marky needed them early on. :)

Nicky,

The Billboard year end list is not there. It's on about page #55 (52-56) or so. I had to search for it last weekend. It's a different post. Also try to find the 10 years of #1's for a link also.

Thanks. :D

i was still 350 miles away from nyc when these '74/'75 records were new, so i can't really comment on the differences between the stores during that period. by the time i started checking out colony, it had shifted its focus away from the dj and hardcore disco fan, and onto the tourist. they held onto a few disco classics and obscurities, but wanted *ridiculous* prices for them. the only time i ever bought a decent amount of records from them was when i had already moved to san francisco and had come back to nyc to visit. colony was liquidating their 12"s, and i walked out with a bunch of rare obscurities at $3 a pop.

downstairs, on the other hand, had throughout the '80s (and even several years into the '90s) served the serious fan and collector. i have a vivid memory of dog-sitting at vince aletti's place, reading his old record mirror and billboard issues, and walking into downstairs records with a list filled with exactly these kinds of 7"s that moulton wrote about and charted. the old-timer who waited on me knew *precisely* what i wanted, and in fact pulled out a bunch of 7"s that he told me were popular with the same people who, back in the day, bought the records on my list (which, by the way, in many cases, they still stocked). i came home with LOTS of 7" goodies that day and at great prices. i was sooooo sad when i went back a few years ago and the store had closed.

glad you found this and like it SFBEARY im sure bernard was around as a little kid im sure i have some old black and white u.s video footage of him as a tiny kid in the late 60s by the time this sunburst release was out he was coming of age and he had a further release dropping the lil', there was a lot of kiddie records round this time and i think now most have been covered in the kiddie thread however if you liked this im sure i can interest you in one more that hasnt been mentioned, cos i know you love the early stuff
at exactly this time in 74 we were playing..
WHO CAN I TURN TO- MARK COPAGE-AVCO EMBASSY
it was more of a 'find' than a new release as it was already a couple of years old and it was very rare originally, there was only about three known copies here, i had one levine had one and someone else d.js were beggin for this! i think avco were asked to do a special press and they chose to re-issue it instead stateside in the fall of 74 in a pic cover the a.side was called 'will it be me' originally and they did the same with the reissue.this fitted in perfectly with the rest of the 74 stuff and its a great bouncy uptempo number with great brass its my favourite of all the kiddie records, look out for this, though its not likely youll come across an original, you may see an original promo but beware theyre double sided as i have one of those too, the giveaway between originals and reissues is avco embassy/avco

hey i can throw in a little quiz here :P marc was a child t.v star starring in a series with diahann carroll set in new york, marcs name in the series was corey anyone remember the name of this series?,its very old
