"Oh no,not my Baby" was a bit to soupy for me, didn't even remember this one until today, never liked it much, but it was played, "I am somebody" by Jimmy James was always a killer club track, people used to run over to the floor the moment they heard the four on the floor drums and the rhythm guitar kicking in, "Stand up Brotha, and speak for yourself" :D "Baby face" was very popular, lots of dancers liked to Hustle to this one, but I really never liked it much either...

"That all black Magic" was released on 12", probably after it charted in '75, this one was a lot of fun to listen to in a loud club....

It's the end of 1975....

and "THE TIME HAS COME TODAY!! HEY!!!" :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
(Remember the Chambers Brothers??)

to start the posting of the compilation of the year-end stats (actually 66 weeks) of chart data for the period 10/26/74--the FIRST Billboard Disco Chart-- through the end of 1975.

Let's start at the very beginning...that's a very good place to start.

I'm gonna do this in the order of a regular chart...it's just gonna take a few weeks to get it all typed.

OK, STEP ONE: first we usually visit the Billboard Pop Charts...

These were the Pop Chart #1s that made an appearance on the Disco Charts (some briefly...some major, some minor)...but as the 3/22/75 chart from the U.S. disco chain Uncle Sam's Disco showed us...across America at this time, more people were probably dancing to what was a "radio hit" than what was necessarily a BIG NYC club hit.

So for the record:

FIRE - Ohio Players
PICK UP THE PIECES - Average White Band
LADY MARMALADE - Labelle
SHINING STAR - Earth, Wind & Fire
LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER - The Captain & Tennille :-? (I know-- but LA gave it 1 point--so it is in the mix, like it or not)
THE HUSTLE - Van McCoy & the Soul City Symphony
JIVE TALKIN' - The Bee Gees
GET DOWN TONIGHT - KC & The Sunshine Band
FAME - David Bowie
THAT'S THE WAY (I LIKE IT) - KC & The Sunshine Band
FLY, ROBIN, FLY - Silver Convention

That's a total of 11 out of 35 Pop #1s.

Then, STEP TWO, we look at:

BILLBOARD SOUL/R&B CHART #1s:

KUNG FU FIGHTING - Carl Douglas
YOU'RE THE FIRST, THE LAST, MY EVERYTHING - Barry White
FIRE - Ohio Players
HAPPY PEOPLE - The Temptations
LADY MARMALADE - Labelle
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME - Shirley & Co.
EXPRESS - B.T. Express
SUPERNATURAL THING (Pt. 1) - Ben E. King
SHINING STAR - Earth, Wind & Fire
SHOESHINE BOY - Eddie Kendricks
L-O-V-E (LOVE) - Al Green
SHAKEY GROUND - The Temptations
WHAT AM I GONNA DO WITH YOU - Barry White
BABY, THAT'S BACKATCHA - Smokey Robinson
SPIRIT OF THE BOOGIE - Kool & the Gang
GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT - The O'Jays
THE HUSTLE - Van McCoy & the Soul City Symphony
FIGHT THE POWER - The Isley Brothers
GET DOWN TONIGHT - KC & The Sunshine Band
IT ONLY TAKES A MINUTE - Tavares
DO IT ANY WAY YOU WANNA - People's Choice
THIS WILL BE - Natalie Cole
TO EACH HIS OWN - Faith, Hope & Charity
FLY, ROBIN, FLY - Silver Convention
THAT'S THE WAY (I LIKE IT) - KC & The Sunshine Band
I LOVE MUSIC - The O'Jays
LOVE ROLLERCOASTER - The Ohio Players

That's 26 out of 42 Soul/R&B #1s.

6 titles achieved both #1 Pop & #1 Soul rankings:
FIRE, LADY MARMALADE, THE HUSTLE, GET DOWN TONIGHT, THAT'S THE WAY (I LIKE IT) and FLY, ROBIN, FLY.

Now, I'm gonna list the Top 25 of each of these 5 charts:

Chart A = TOP AUDIENCE RESPONSE RECORDS IN NYC DISCOS

from 10/26/74 - 12/27/75: 66 charts

Compiled by Tom Moulton from clubplay reports from NYC's top DJs (Tom Savarese, Walter Gibbons, Richie Kaczor, Bobby "DJ" Guttardo, etc.)

This is the MASTER LIST (used by Joel Whitburn in his book as the definitive #1s before the Record World chart started in March, 1975).
It's the GOLD STANDARD; conservative & consistent. Records make this list, as John Houseman used to imperiously sneer about Smith-Barney "because (we) THEY EARNED IT"

Or, as Ashford & Simpson once sang "TRIED, TESTED & FOUND TRUE."!!!

Records are usually introduced in the #15-12 range and work their way up the chart.
Records that are BIG HITS spend several months on this chart (unlike the retail charts).
Out of the 461 titles that charted on all the Billboard charts in the past 66 weeks, only a conservative 148 charted on the A-List. (The retail charts all charted approx. 80-110 more titles each).

CHART B = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (DOWNSTAIRS RECORDS- NYC)

from 10/26/74 - 12/27/75

The trendiest of all the retail charts. Usually finds the hot records first--then drops 'em real fast. The top record here has only 129 points and only 3 others have more than 100 points.

I'm likening Chart B & C (Colony Records) to the heat-seeking & fickle Hilton Sisters. Paris is chart B; Nicky is chart C. They are at every HOT party....Paris is like a butterfly in heat to find the Hot New Thing. ("That's HOT"). .then her gnat's attention span causes her to get bored and seek out yet another party. Nicky, on the other hand, might stay a little longer, if she's having a good time.

B charted the most records of any chart--267 out of 461.

It's oddest #1: "Sea Lion" by Grover Washington, Jr. Came out of nowhere to be #1 for one week, #3 for one week...then GOOOOOOOOONE. B charted "Baby Face" @ #2 for one week--then never charted it again. "It's NOT HOT-- IT'S TY-ERD" :P

NEXT!!!!

1) DO IT ANY WAY YOU WANNA - People's Choice

2) I'LL BE HOLDING ON - Al Downing
(Chess) (120 points/ 10 weeks) Peak: 2 weeks @ #2
3) LOVE DON'T YOU GO THROUGH NO CHANGES ON ME - Sister Sledge
(Atco) (106 points/ 8 weeks) Peak: 3 weeks @ #1
4) BRAZIL - The Ritchie Family

5) EXPRESS - B.T. Express

CHART C = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (COLONY RECORDS-NYC)

Colony is trendy but more loyal to the records it likes. It usually finds 'em in tandem with Downstairs--but it keeps 'em on the charts a little bit longer.
Colony charted 235 out of 461 records-the least of the 3 retail stores.
Colony charted 18 records with over 100 points as opposed to 4 on chart B. (The Nicky Vs. Paris Hilton factor).

CHART D = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (MELODY SONG SHOPS- BROOKLYN, QUEENS, LONG ISLAND)

Added 11/16/74 to the Billboard charts...to get a feel for what was happenin' outside Manhattan.

If chart B & C are, respectively, Paris & Nicky Hilton..then chart D could be compared to Paris' ex- best girlfriend and partner in crime...Miss Nicole Richie!!!! :P

It's more one-toe-in-da-GHETTO Urban, more radio-oriented, and has a special affinity for anything Motown.

URBAN = more funky-oriented records than the charts above-- Rufus, Disco Tex, Labelle, Jimmy Castor Bunch.

RADIO-ORIENTED= only chart to list the Three Degrees' smash "When Will I See You Again" and "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas, among others.

LOVES DA MOTOWN= An LP by The Supremes will chart for weeks on end here and nowhere else; ditto Eddie Kendricks titles abound; Temptations, David Ruffin, Michael Jackson, etc.

At first, it was the most erratic--dropping things and adding them back and dropping 'em and adding 'em in--maybe this was because different locations were compiling the info? But by the end of of 1974, it (Nicole) was more in the groove with the Hilton Sisters of B & C.

Quirks did arise: #1 listing for Earth, Wind & Fire LP cuts: AFRICANO & HAPPY FEELING...no mention of SHINING STAR from the same LP; #1 listing for HAPPY by Eddie Kendricks.

But, when it's all added up...it's actually the most consistent with the final Top 100 of the Disco Compilation Consensus chart--charting all 50 of the top 50 and 96 of the final top 100.

It has 14 records with over 100 points; 259 titles out of 461 charted here.

1) FREE MAN - South Shore Commission

Default Couple of queries re: End of year charts

MarkyD
I have a couple of questions please:
Chart A - Records are usually introduced in the #15-12 range - does this mean just that ? they only tend to come in to this chart at #15...#12 ?

Why does Moulton say that G.Gaynor was actually on her fifth week at #1, on the first Billboard chart ?

Melody Song shops chart - is this a chain ?or just the three sites listed ?

Who/What is Bahama Mama's ? (Chart E ), also, Missing the first 7 months or so of data reported on the NYC charts...does this mean you don't have them available, or they were not produced ??

Any clarification would help
Cheers

I meant--as opposed to the retail stores which debuted records at #1 their first week on the chart. A would usually list them @ #12 or #14, for example--not a rule--and then work them up the chart as the weeks progressed. B, C & D would debut a record @#1 and then drop it the next week.

It's the slow and conservative approach vs. the erratic approach--but sales in a retail store are very "what's hot" now and the records change quite quickly. The A chart only charted the "proven" hits.

Apparently, they musta been keeping track of the number of weeks before they started printing the charts. I'm sure they did some preliminary charts to get the system down before they went to press on 10/26/74. It's in the first Moulton column...I assume that's what he meant.

I don't know...I tried to get someone to enlighten us--but no one answered that one.

I think it was a disco/club in LA that gave the first two LA charts...I assume they gathered a few more clubs together and called it the LA/San Diego Club chart. I thought I made it pretty clear that the chart debuted for 2 weeks in May...then became permanent in June. There were no charts before that or I woulda printed them, right?
:-?

First of all, congrats on the completion of the 1975 charts. Must've been a LOT of typing. :o

Personally, when I think of Downstairs, I automatically think of an achingly sophisticated bohemian type of guy with a goatee, beret, sunglasses, and glass of red wine.

On the other hand, I've noticed that Colony's customers don't mind a bit of cheese once in a while.

So anyway, I have the charts and columns up to the end of Jan 76. Tomorrow I'm going back to the library for the first time in months. After that, I should have them up to May or June, and I can email you with the exact number of sheets I would need to copy to provide you with all the columns.

Hey shootyourshot,

Thanks for your help--there would be no Moulton columns for the second half of '75-were it not for your diligent efforts!!! That's probably the best part, no?

I'm not done yet. The Disco Compilation Top 100 is coming and the 100 Top artists, the 40+ Top Labels, and various best/worst, most/least awards + Dave Marsh's Top 40 faves from 1974 & 1975 and the Grammy nominees/winners from '74 & '75 that had a toe in da disco chart.

Then I will rest. (for awhile). :P

   I am the GUEST.

p.s. your take on Downstairs is interesting--I guess I was trying to find a reference for the fickleness of their taste & the speed which they dropped stuff. So you see a bohemian who's too kewl for school. Hmmm, that's another way of looking at it.

Default charts = THANKS

Hey MarkyD
Thanks for the explaination. You did explain EVERYTHING else well, so don't be so harsh on yourself !

Well done for completing this years charts, they are absolutely fascinating.
I have come across some excellent tracks - sitting on a cd somewhere - and your charts have prompted me to play them -You are helping to bring music that has laid dormant for years back to life just by typing them up !

As I have said before, you are creating more than just a chart typing service, you are keeping the torch burning for the generations to follow.
Remember Modern music only started around the Fifties, so you are helping to document the founding stones of an industry that will go on well into the future !!!

If only all this MUSIC was available in one place I might be tempted to buy an Ipod!!!!

LOVIN' these charts ! (big surprise  )

Stats ----- they tell us so much ....and yet again do they really ..... Looking at these #1s , one would think "EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD " was an ultimate disco masterpiece .... while lil' ol' Donna Summer's "LOVE TO LOVE YA BABY" was a much more modest musical piece that just happened to squeak in at #1 for one pitiful week.

---- Love this stuff Marky. Thank you so much for your hard work! .............remicks
