Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: I LOVE MUSIC(week #1); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the 6 (this week) Billboard charts into one.

Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= I LOVE MUSIC)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= SALSOUL ORCHESTRA )
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= I LOVE MUSIC)
D=Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= SALSOUL ORCHESTRA)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= LOVE MACHINE)

+ Special 6th chart:
F= Top 10 Best Selling Imports @ NYC Retailers:
(#1= LADY BUMP)

5 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; + 1 chart with 10 items; 10 points for #1; 1 point for #10 = 85 points max.

Add them up and voila!....

THE FINAL TALLY:

58 total items; 48 last week
+20 debuts +6 returns/ -16 dropoffs
0 records on all 6 charts (6th chart being IMPORTS this week)
1 record on 5 charts (THE O'JAYS)
2 records on 4 charts (SALSOUL ORCH. & WING & A PRAYER)
6 records on 3 charts
7 records on 2 charts
42 records on only 1 chart!!!!!!!!!!!

"Tell Me 'Bout the Rabbits, George"

Well, I debated whether to include the 6th IMPORT chart into the totals; decided what the hell, let's do it!!!!

Most of the IMPORTS disappear next week except "LADY BUMP" & "I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT"--so I'll have to type all the others on the drop list. :x

Lotsa product out there--even not counting the Imports, there's 32 records on only one chart!!!!

Only 16 records on more than one chart!!!!!

It's THE O'JAYS vs. SALSOUL ORCHESTRA for the top spot next week.

The O'Jays rankings this week:
A= #1, B= #6, C= #1, D= #3; E= #6

Salsoul Orchestra's rankings:
A= #7, B= #1, C= #2, D= #1, no charting in LA

The South Shore Commission's LP is charting the new extended version of the previous #1 "FREE MAN" and 2 other titles "HANDLE WITH CARE" & "TRAIN CALLED FREEDOM"; each has 36 points for a #4 ranking this week.

Slippage: Donna Summer, Silver Convention & Gloria Gaynor drop out of the Top 5; Donna retains #6, Silver Convention #11, and Gloria falls down to #18 from #3 last week!!!

Penny McLean (lead singer in Silver Convention) is helped by the IMPORT chart and chart A) to leap up to #10 from #41 last week. Atlantic is gonna release this domestically in a couple weeks. Miss Penny (real name "GERTRUDE"!!! ) steps over her group currently at #11.

First sightings of future disco stars: Vicki Sue Robinson (#19) & "Mike" Michael Zager @ #41.

Jazz artist Donald Byrd leaps up to #9 and his former backup band The Blackbyrds debut at #17.

Bob Crewe redoes his Frankie Valli hit for female singer Gerri Grainger (that's how AMG spells it); the chart says Jerri Granger; Bob wrote & produced the original "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" in 1967; everything old is new again.

The Cover List:

TANGERINE
BABY FACE
DRIVE MY CAR
HOW HIGH THE MOON
I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT (Lerner & Loewe tune from "My Fair Lady"
CHLOE (standard written by Gus Kahn, I think)
CARAVAN
OUR DAY WILL COME
TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT
FOOLS RUSH IN (Johnny Mercer standard previously charted by Brook Benton & Ricky Nelson, among many others)
GIRL FROM IPANEMA (Bossa nova classic by Antonio Carlos Jobim; big hit in the US for sax player Stan Getz & singer Astrud Gilberto in 1963)
ONE FINE DAY (Goffin/King smash for The Chiffons in 1963)
SUMMER PLACE - (another version of the movie theme that has been charting for several weeks by Percy Faith)
CAN'T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU
THE LITTE DRUMMER BOY

and then these suspicious-sounding, possible covers on the IMPORT chart:

WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU ( Is this the Labelle song?)
S.O.S (Is this the ABBA song?)
I'LL BE AROUND (Is this the Spinners song?)
BRAZIL (Is this another cover of the Ritchie Family?)

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

(Reviews from the 1979 edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide, edited by Dave Marsh)

Debuting this week....

THE BLACKYRDS (#17)

"Originally Donald Byrd's backing band, the Blackbyrds stepped out into the light in the early Seventies as a jazz-funk fusion group with something of their own to say. At least at first, the rhythmic bottom was solid and danceable, the vocals were appropriately spare, and the instrumentation--particularly the horn charts--was melodically adventurous and fulfilling. The Blackbyrds [****] was their debut, and Flying Start [****] represents a creative, if not a commercial peak. But after the success of Flying Start, the Blackbyrds began to see themselves as a disco attraction rather than as a progressive R&B act, and City Life [**] exhibited a dispiriting reliance on recycled riff-hooks and an embarrassing bent for hollow social and psycho-cybernetic commentary. Unfinished Business[*] and Action[*] simply continue the decline into self-parody." (MG = Mikal Gilmore)

VICKI SUE ROBINSON (#19)

"She started as an aspiring Broadway singer/actress, which may account for the uptown energy of "Turn The Beat Around," a truer "Boogie Down Broadway." The rest of Never Gonna Let You Go [***] alternates ballad and Gloria Gaynor-type romps. Her second and third albums have Vicki moving downtown to the cabaret. It's "strictly for lovers," but she earns a shot on the Johnny Carson Show before retiring to Atlantic City." (BT = ??)

CLUB DIALOG by Tom Moulton

Column #57/ 11/22/75

(My thanks to shootyour shot for providing this entire column) :D

"Kickin," a new LP from the Mighty Clouds Of Joy(ABC), hits the street this week. The album was completed in August and it seems that everyone on the disco circuit is already well aware of it. There are two strong dance cuts: "Ride The Mighty High", uptempo and probably the best song from the group to date, and the medley of "I Got The Music In Me / Superstition." The latter cut isn't as uptempo as "Ride The Mighty High," but it is strong.

Bobby Guttadaro premiered the LP at the grand opening of the new disco Infinity here Nov. 5. The record should prove a monster. As for Infinity, touted as the largest local dance club, its opening drew a couple of thousand persons. The club will be membership only starting Dec. 5.

Buddah is releasing its first 12-inch disco disks for club DJs. The first title available will be "Joyce" by Papa John Creach, which has been remixed [by Tom Moulton] and slowed down [from around 140 bpm to 130 bpm] to work for the clubs. The 12-inchers are part of a new disco series from the label, and in the case of "Joyce," a commercial version will ship out some two weeks after the special promo copies go to the spinners.

The label is also releasing "Hold Back The Night" from the "Legendary Zing" LP by the Trammps. They'll be looking to duplicate the success the song has garnered in the UK. Also coming from the Trammps will be a new single on the Atlantic label.

Bang Records has just released "Do It With Feeling" by Michael Zager and the Moon Band. Several DJs have been playing advance copies of the record, and now that the commercial copies are available the flip side, "This Is The Life," is also starting to create some excitement, dance and sales-wise.

[Watch your back, Gloria....]

Casablanca has hired Disco Sound Associates to put together a bash at the Pachyderm here Tuesday (18.) for Donna Summer's return from Europe. Her "Love To Love You Baby" is high on the disco action charts.

"Once You Hit The Road" by Dionne Warwicke (WB) is one of the strongest cuts on her forthcoming "Track Of The Cat" LP. It has a Spinners sound to it and was arranged and produced by Thom Bell.

Columbia has released two strong singles in "Sing A Song" by Earth, Wind, & Fire, a happy melodic tune with a good dance rhythm, and "(I Like Making That) Early Morning Love" by Rozetta Johnson, a funky R&B number.

And, Atlantic will be rush-releasing the new Simon Said record "Smile." [cover of the Charlie Chaplin composition] It's the first label release for the Gloria Gaynor backup group. [Gloria, watch out...Donna's coming to town...Donna's gonna be #1...so you better "WATCH OUT"] :P __________________________________________________ ___

The Big Tease:

Next week (11/29/75) the 4 NYC charts and 2 guest charts from Washington, D.C and Boston are printed. NO LA CHART!!!

Most of this week's imports drop off (a total of 28 dropoffs), 10 items debut and 6 return.

Notable debuts include new titles from The O'Jays, the Charles Randolph Greane Sounde, Babe Ruth, Archie Bell & the Drells, Stephanie Mills, the Biddu Orchestra, Margie Joseph & Blue Magic, Michael Zager & the Moon Band, Barbra Streisand, and volume 2 of "Disco Gold."

And, once again, the new battle for #1 is between the current chart-toppers The O'Jays and the contenders, the Salsoul Orchestra.

The second-half of the Top 10 (#6-#10) is replaced by
different titles than this week. Lotsa records out there vying for attention from the dancers.

__________________________________________________ __

This week's chart was typed listening to:
1) the radio
2) The Collection - The Glass Family
3) Fill My Life With Love: The Best of... - Saint Tropez

Hate this new system, Bernie. :x AND where's the EDIT option???? :x

Is that being sacrificed (temporarily) so anyone can post without being a member????? :-? :o :-? :o :-?

------- Marky : Question --- Why do you think The Miracles "Love Machine" charts at #5 and their "Overture " at # 12? They are both from the same "City Of Angels " album . IF they were combined together seems like that would put them close to #1...... BTW I happened to buy that album at Amoeba Records this week (2.99) ... because of the cut "Ain't Nobody Straight In LA" ---- so I am playing "Overture " since I didn't remember it . It's an instrumental which is odd coming from the backup VOCAL group of Smokey Robinson. Not bad at all ....I'd never would have heard it and thought "MOTOWN" much less The Miracles. ( more like Isaac Hayes meets Van McCoy @ Salsoul feat. The Love Unlimited Orch. )

-------- About Julie Budd .... I came upon the TWELVE INCH version of that song way back then mixed in a discount bin at a classical record store . It was on London Records , not RCA ( but maybe RCA distributed London) and it was labeled "ONE FINE DAY " by JULIE . Not remixed --- about a 4 minute song . I think it's the only 12" I ever saw pressed by London --(?)-- I always liked the song and consider it one of my more prized records.

So What?

The Salsoul Orchestra (82 points) bests the O'Jays (76 pts.) this week to claim number one for the first time.

Salsoul Orchestra stats:

A= #3; B= #1; C= #2; D= #1; E= NO CHART; F= #4; G= #3

The O'Jays' stats:

A= #1; B= #12; C= #3; D= #2; E= NO CHART; F= #1; G= #1

Wing & a Prayer is close behind with 69--BUT chart B will never chart it again--so it's doomed. hee hee hee.

Well, the absence of chart E (LA) causes problems for the songs it was charting highly- notably, Donna Summer & Silver Convention. Gary Toms Empire, Van McCoy, Beckett Brown & El Coco return next week with the LA chart.

It's NOT my favorite time of the year for Disco....a lotta so-so stuff charting. :-? :o

I'm eager for this year to be over. :-?

I'm pressed for time......so that's all I'm gonna say. :P

Artist Spotlight

(Reviews from the 1979 edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide, edited by Dave Marsh)

Debuting this week....

BABE RUTH (#29)

"Formed in 1973, Babe Ruth featured Jenny Haan, a powerful vocalist in the Julie Driscoll-Lydia Pense mold, and multi-instrumentalist, Alan Shacklock. Within their records can be found everything from Italian-western movie themes to rehashed soul and Frank Zappa, not to mention disco and all-out rock. Shacklock left after Babe Ruth, the group's third and best album, because of commercial strikeout. Haan followed after the fourth, Stealin' Home.[***] Supporting cast carried on with hokey baseball cliches. Their best music came from giving Haan free reign--"Dancer" from Babe Ruth sounds like the result of a hot jam between Steve Marriott and Driscoll." (AN= Alan Niester)

STEPHANIE MILLS (#33)

"The teenage Mills was a sensation as Dorothy in The Wiz, the 1975 Broadway play that revived The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, her big voice was too immature to carry off a pop record, even one nicely written and arranged by Burt Bacharach and Hal David [For the First Time **] DM= Dave Marsh

MARGIE JOSEPH (41)

"Margie Joseph's early Atlantic recordings were produced by Arif Mardin, who treated her like a poor man's Aretha Franklin, with disastrous results. Those records are now deleted; her sole remeaining LP is also her best.

Hear the Words, Feel the Feeling [***] was produced by Lamont Dozier, who seemed to know exactly what to do with her. Dozier supplied material, arrangements, vocal backups and structure in a tight, Motown-derived setting. All Joseph had to do was follow his directions and sing.

The title track was her best single ever; for the first time in her career, she sounds self-assured. One wishes the overall level of the material were higher, but a few numbers--"Don't Turn the Lights Off," for instance--succeed on their own limited level and she sings with some of the tenderness and conviction that was hidden for so long." (RG= Russell Gersten)

BARBRA STREISAND (#44)

"In 1963, at age twenty, Streisand catapulted a minor Broadway success into a major recording career. The Barbra Streisand Album*** typecast her as a theatrical diva of capricious temperament and inexhaustible will. For freshness and sheer chutzpah, Streisand hasn't topped her ironic version of "Happy Days Are Here Again" on the debut. Through the Sixties, Streisand remained fixed in the firmament: a musically conservative force with a vast nonrock following that included a camp cult. Greatest Hits***** reprises most of the high points of this period, with "People" and "Free Again" the pinnacles. During this time, Streisand worked most frequently with Peter Matz, a first-rate arranger/conductor.

Stoney End**** was the first of two albums made with producer Richard Perry. Both incorporated contemporary pop and "rock" material (the single version of Laura Nyro's "Stoney End" was a major hit in 1970). The Way We Were*** brought back the "old" Streisand, sounding more confident than ever. Streisand Superman*** showed her at last able to handle rock without sounding too uncomfortable. Released after the commerical success (and artistic disaster) of her home movie A Star Is Born*, it showed Streisand at the peak of her powers and with a "contemporary" audience at last in tow." (SH = Stephen Holden)

CLUB DIALOG by Tom Moulton

Column #58/ 11/29/75

Atlantic is rush-releasing "Lady Bump" b/w "The Lady Bumps On" by Penny (says "Johnny"! ) McLean this week. It's been a much sought after record, McLean is one of the lead singers of the group Silver Convention, and that alone has created strong interest in the disk. The record was first released in Germany (original origin) and is now No. 1 there. Canada was next, and currently, the record is a top selling disco import here. The label will be releasing a special 12 inch disco disk of both the vocal and instrumental version shortly. It was put together (disco-style) by Atlantic's Anita Wexler.

"Star Trek" by The Charles Randolph Grean Sounde (Ranwood) is starting to create some excitement here. Test pressings were given out to several disk jockeys and word of the song is starting to spread. The song is the theme song from one of television's most popular shows. The theme is very uptempo and it retains a certain hauntiness which at high volume is almost eerie.

RCA has just released a new single version of Henry Mancini's "African Symphony" from his latest LP. It has been re-edited and made longer for the discos with several rhythm breaks. It has also been put on a 12 inch disco disk.

Pye has also released its first 12 inch disco disk with "I Am Somebody" by Jimmy James & The Vagabonds. It hasn't been re-mixed but on 12 inch the levels are much hotter.

There is a lot of excitement around town here on a new group from New Jersey called Reigne. Its first single will be released soon (probably on the Silver Blue label) and is titled "Thunder." The record has the rhythm and timboli sound of "Titanic," with a very haunting melody plus outbreaks of thunder. There are test pressings around in several of the clubs of the disco version which is over 5 minutes long. Producer Joel Diamond feels this is a good way to test a potential release and to see if any demand is created by the advance play. A number of producers are doing well with their product, including Bob Crewe, Ken Cayre, Reid Whitelaw and Norman Bergen. They have all found it to be quite successful.

"Inside America" (part 1 & 2) by Juggy Murray Jones (Jupiter Records) is starting to create some noise here as well as in LA. Juggy is known for his disco classic "Built For Speed" from several years back. Juggy will include the original "Built For Speed" (part 1 & 2) in his forthcoming "Inside America" LP. The song has a feel very similar to his past hit and there is a little "Hava Nagila" as well as the most copied riff of the seventies from "TSOP" (it wouldn't be inside America if that riff were not included).

Roulette releases this week the new Poison single "Get Up And Move Your Body" and there will be a disco version as well. This single has more of a party atmosphere and a vocal sound a lot like Rare Earth. There will also be a new Ecstasy, Passion, & Pain soon that was done in Philadelphia.

Special thanks to Bill Owens, Washington D.C., and Allen Shivek, Boston, for their help in their local reports.

The BIG TEASE:

Next week, 12/6/75 is the first of the final 4 charts for 1975.

Who's #1? Well, The O'Jays shouldn't be counted out--although they face stiff competiton for the Salsoul Orchestra, Wing & A Prayer Marching Fife & Drum Corps and newcomer Penny McLean. Next week's #1 has a grand total of 88 out of a possible 100 points!!!!!!

The LA chart is back along with a 15 item chart from guest city, San Francisco and a 10 item chart from Miami.

13 debuts, 8 returns and 12 dropoffs. Most auspicious debuts from Mighty Clouds of Joy & a new one from Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

Remicks,

I'm trying to keep the titles separate and give only exactly the points each song has earned that week. LA did not chart "Overture" so....there is a difference in the "Love Machine" and "Overture" totals last week. This week, without the LA chart they have exactly the same number of points, so they are tied. Get it?

--- OK I think i sort of get it .... but how do you know that when a city like LA only mentions "LOVE MACHINE" it isn't just a matter of abbreviated reporting .. the entire album is implied with "LOVE MACHINE" getting the dominant play ? Just as with The O'Jays ---isn't "UNITY" just more music being played from the same release? --- Just trying to understand the reporting system of the time .... however you figure it is OK by me .... just glad you are doing it :D

----- More importantly .... say it isn't so !! " (ARE YOU READY) DO THE BUS STOP " by Fatback Band has falllen off already ? After just one week? Really? ..... .......................If I ever do a top 25 disco list , i think that's one that will make the cut .

Billboard Pop Chart #1:
1) THAT'S THE WAY (I LIKE IT) - KC & The Sunshine Band (2nd non-consecutive week)

Billboard Soul/R&B Chat #1:
1) I LOVE MUSIC (Part 1) - The O'Jays

(Records in BOLD charted on the Disco charts.)
__________________________________________________ __

Disco Action:

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: I LOVE MUSIC (week #3); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the 7 (this week) Billboard charts into one.

Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= BABY FACE)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= SALSOUL ORCHESTRA )
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= SALSOUL ORCHESTRA)
D=Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= I LOVE MUSIC/ UNITY)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= I LOVE MUSIC)

+ Special 6th chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records In San Francisco Discos
(#1= I LOVE MUSIC)

+ Special 7th chart: Top 10 Audience Response Records in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Discos:
(#1= DRIVE MY CAR)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15 ; + 1 chart with 10 items; 10 points for a #1; 1 point for a #10; = 100 maximum points.

Add them up and voila!....

3 records on 4 charts
6 records on 3 charts
8 records on 2 charts
34 records on only 1 chart

What's It All About, Maaaaaar-Keeeee? :P
(Is it just for old disco we live?
.....hmmm...pretty much) :-?

Well.... The O'Jays recapture the #1 spot this week for the fourth time. Wing & a Prayer hit #2--but B refuses to chart them again--so they cannot ever top the chart without that support. Pity. :D

The Salsoul Orchestra dips down to #3 from #1 last week--it's not over for them, however. Miss Penny McLean finally gets a domestic release and some retail action to push her up to #4.

The O'Jays stats:
A= #2, B= #8, C= #2, D= #1; E= #1, F= #1, G= #4

Wing & A Prayer stats:
A= #1; B= n/c, C= #4, D= #3, E= #3, F= #5, G= #2

Salsoul Orchestra stats:
A= #3, B= #1, C= #1, D= #2, E= #11. F= #11, G= #7

Penny McLean stats:
A= #4, B= #2, C= #3, D= #5, E= #10, F= n/c, G= n/c

This week we have debuts from Juggy Murray Jones, MFSB, KC & The Sunshine Band, 5000 Volts, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Earth, Wind & Fire, Mary Ann Farra & Satin Soul, Mondo Disco, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Ralph Carter, Bobby Hebb and Cameo. I can safely say there are 2 future #1s in that batch. Just guess.

Ironically, we get a debut from a group called Mondo Disco at #47 ("Yakety Yak") followed at #49 by a record titled "Mondo Disco" by El Coco. Who knew?

Bobby Hebb the original artist of the Sixties classic "Sunny" has re-recorded his hit with a disco beat and debuts at #52--obviously hoping to get a little disco action after Yambu hit the top 10 with their jazzy-Latinish cover of his record.

Similarly, Percy Faith is back with his disco version of his 1960 movie theme "Summer Place '76."

Donna Summer leaps back up to #5 thanks to her support in LA (#2), SF (#2) & Miami (#5). Chart A has her at #11....no chartings from the retailers. Silver Convention is "saved" (Save me, save me, I am dropping from the charts") by California chartings also--from #45 up to #16!!!

Gary Toms Empire RETURNS to the chart at #7 totally thanks to the 3 charts outside NYC. #1 in Miami, #4 in LA, #4 in SF....another record that NYC didn't dig.

The Artist Spotlight

(Reviews form the 1979 edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide, edited by Dave Marsh)

Debuting this week....

MIGHTY CLOUDS OF JOY (#32)

"The Mighty Clouds of Joy are one of the outstanding young, modern soul gospel quartets; they feature the lead voice of Joe Ligons rising out of a chorus of falsetto voices. Ligon likes to preach a'la the Rev. C. L. Franklin (Aretha's father), and if he sometimes sounds remarkably like Wilson Pickett, perhaps it's because he and Pickett both patterned themselves after Julius Cheeks of the Sensational Nightingales. ............( next part mostly about their gospel recordings)....

On paper, the Mighty Clouds' soul collaborations with
Gamble and Huff ( WUT?????--Dave Crawford produced "Kickin' ") :o :o :o look good. They could possibly have been another Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes featuring Theodore Pendergrass, given the similarities between Pendergrass and Ligons. But they came along with too little too late. They hooked up with the production team just as the Philly Sound was becoming mechanized and predictable.
It's Time" *** has a few flashy surprises, but by "Kickin'" ** the group is grunting through poorly chosen material like an "I've Got The Music In Me/Superstition" medley. On Truth Is the Power * they don't even have the benefit of the Philly producers, and they sound like just about any anonymous soul group." (J. MO = John Morthland)

(Sorry, guy-- BUT "Mighty High" is CLAAAAAASSSSIKKKKK!!!) :D :D :D :D :D

EARTH, WIND & FIRE (#36)

"Maurice White, the vocalist/percussionist who is the energy behind EW&F, put this band together from a bunch of Chicago slum kids. When it started back in 1971, its music was closer to the street than it has become over the years. At first impression the group was like a straighter R&B version of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Mystic and celebratory, the songs bridged into loose, jazzlike horn colors and elongated rhythms the likes of which recent EW&F fans probably wouldn't recognize.

When EW&F switched labels, it changed personality. White has reworked the personnel, expanded the fold and turned EW&F into one streamlined hit-cutting factory. All the while that same religious spirit not only maintained but came through even more strongly, if only because the size of its audience grew. To see EW&F on stage was to behold a gospel experience that was an existential hosanna guaranteed to heal your ills. Gratitude*****, a two-disc set (one disc recorded live), presents the band in its truest environment. The latter Seventies have grown up with EW&F hits like "Shining Star," "Celebrate," and "Sing a Song," some of the most joyous moments in modern music." (BM= Bruce Malamut)

CLUB DIALOG by Tom Moulton

Column #59/ 12/06/75

(Thanks to shootyourshot for providing this column in its entirety.) :D

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' "Wake Up Everybody" LP has local spinners saying that the cut "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha, Baby" (5:54) is the strongest offering from the group since its classic "Bad Luck." Another cut from the album generating interest is "Don't Leave Me This Way." While it's mellower than "Wake Up . . ." [think he means "Tell The World'???] :-? it's still strong.

Two other albums released from the Gamble & Huff camp are from Dee Dee Sharp (Gamble's wife) and Archie Bell and the Drells. There are three strong dance cuts on Ms. Sharp's LP: "Share My Love" (the strongest), "Happy Bout The Whole Thing," and "Touch My Life." Practically all the cuts on the album are "up," in this her first musical venture since the early sixties.

The Archie Bell & The Drells LP also contains three good disco cuts: "Let's Groove," featuring a hustle rhythm and running 6:04 in length, "Dance Your Troubles Away" (6:21) and the group's current single "The Soul City Walk."

Midland International is releasing "Ooh, What A Night" by Linda G. Thompson. Thompson is one of the lead singers of the group Silver Convention and Midland, as Atlantic did with Penny McLean's "Lady Bump," is releasing a 12 inch disco version of the song. Thompson's single sounds more like the group than does McLean's single (she is a Silver Convention member also). Both, though, should score individual successes. [Linda's never really takes off...]

There are some good reactions here to the French import of Crystal Grass's single "Pio Maravilha Taj Mahal" b/w "Let Me See You Get Your Thing Off Baby (Hustle)." Both sides are from their forthcoming album, which will be available overseas in January. There are no plans to release either the single or LP here as yet.

George and Gwen McCrae have a new album out this week and there are several good dance cuts on it - "I'll Do The Rockin" (the single release), "Winners Together Or Losers Apart," a strong cut, and "The Rub." The album has a mellow pop/soul feel to it and not a "TK sound" you might expect.

Closer to the TK sound (right on the mark) is Betty Wright's new single "Slip And Do It" (Alston). It's slower than her "Where Is The Love," but its got a spark to it and should score dance points.

The Big TEASE

Next week...more o' the same. I don't have next week's chart with me...so it's rather hard to tease it!!!!!!!

I have just about finished compiling the year-end charts. There were 462 record titles on the 10/26/74 - 12/27/75 charts. There is the problem of the records in the second half of 1975 getting more points because of the additional charts added--but the final result is pretty accurate, I think. There is one point separating #1 from #2 and 1 point separating #2 from #3!!!! :P

So what information would you like from the year-end chart? :-?

I'm planning on a Top 25 for each chart (ABCDE) and a Top 100 overall and then an Artist chart...is there anything else that would be interesting? Hmmmmm????

2) Genius Loves Company - Ray Charles & friends
3) Finest Hour - The Crusaders
4) Twentysomething - Jamie Cullum

Thanks Mark for all this great information. I only started listening to disco music around 1977/78 so I am really looking forward to when you get to those years. But still enjoying everything you are doing in the meantime! Well done! :)

That's weird Marky as i've got a nasty cold too. I've never heard that disco version of Percy Faith's 'Summer Place' so I've ordered it from GEMM as I always loved the original.

tennisvideos, thanks for the praise. Glad you're enjoying reading the charts. :D

SandraDee, I laughed for about a minute when I saw that you chose "Big Gay Al" as your Avatar!!!!

I almost went with BGA myself....thought about Cartmen, Mr. Garrison.....even Mr. Hankey (the turd)!!!! (but decided probably not the best choice!!)

I ultimately went with "Mr. Slave"!!! I think I knew him once upon a time, long, long ago in another galaxy!!! Reminds me of just about everyone in SF in the late Seventies!!!

Quelle Surprise!!!!! :P

P.S. I'm wondering what that little patch of flesh color is in Mr. Slave's crotch area!!!???? I didn't notice that before. A little PRICK????   Say it isn't so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :x :x :x

Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: I LOVE MUSIC (week #4); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the 7 (this week) Billboard charts into one.

Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= I LOVE MUSIC)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= LADY BUMP/ THE LADY BUMPS ON )
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= LADY BUMP/ THE LADY BUMPS ON)
D=Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY)

+ Special 6th chart: Top 10 Audience Response Records In Boston Discos
(#1= SALSOUL ORCHESTRA)

+ Special 7th chart: Top 10 Audience Response Records in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Discos:
(#1= BABY FACE)

5 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15 ; + 2 chart with 10 items; 10 points for a #1; 1 point for a #10; = 95 maximum points.

Add them up and voila!....
