Hmmm...I assumed it was the LP that showed Paul hanging off the hands of a clock (a la Harold Lloyd) above a city street. It's not listed on AMG....so I can't verify right now.

"The Perils Of Paul" is a take-off on the old "Perils Of Pauline" silent film; the hanging from the clock image is from another old silent starring Harold Lloyd.

That's my thought.

Hmmmmmm...no I guess that was "Shut Out", right? NOOO, I mean "Keeping Time"....maybe they thought "Perils Of Paul(ine)" was too gay?

Maybe they got the title screwed up?

OK, I checked the source last night.

Rolling Stone Record Guide references Casablanca 7055 as the label number of the "Perils Of Paul" LP which corresponds to "Shut Out"; don't know why they thought that was the title. :-? :-? :-? :-?

However, it is a more clever title, all things considered.

I think the album with Paul hanging off the clock is Keeping Time.

2 records on all 6 charts (#1 & #3)
3 records on 5 charts
3 records on 4 charts
2 records on 3 charts
8 records on 2 charts
29 records on only 1 chart

What's It All About, Marky?

Philly Soul Vs. Euro Disco; Philly Soul wins once again. The O'Jays have a phenomenal 80 points out of a possible 90!!! I think that's the best score ever with 6 charts.

"I Love Music"
A= #1, B= #8; C= #1; D= #1; E= #4; F= #1

B has dropped Donna Summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She's either #1, 2, 3 or 4 on every other chart. Those bastards!!!!!! :x

B also totally drops it's #1 record last week: Percy Faith's remake of "Summer Place '76"; this week it charts as #1: "Sea Lion" an instrumental by Grover Washington, Jr. (this will not chart anywhere else!!)

B has very little in common with the other charts; 9 records charting on B are charting nowhere else. This week it charts "Baby Face" at #2; it will NEVER CHART IT AGAIN!!!
Not even when it's #1 on the A chart!!! :D :D :D

B (Downstairs Records) is either A) a Real Maverick :D :D :D :D or B) a Real Spoiler :x  :o :-? depending on your alliances and preferences.

Penny McLean's German Import charts at #13 on chart A; domestic distribution is just around the corner.

Moon Lion charts a disco version of a perennial Christmas carol-- "The Little Drummer Boy"!!!!!! I say it's the FIRST DISCO CHRISTMAS RECORD. :D

We have our first 4-way--tie, that is. The Ritchie Family charts 4 titles with 6 points each.........so I bundled them at #31. This is the last week for these tunes. "Brazil" has been a smash hit, debuting at #10 on 7/12/7 and lasting til mid-November; (also, highly influential on the records being released at this point, in terms of orchestration and cover material ideas.)

The Salsoul Orchesta LP is the FIRST LP with an "ALL CUTS" listing (well except for the "Love Letters" disclaimer; musta been a ballad?) :-?

Note that the very WHITE Silver Convention has crossed over to top the SOUL/R&B chart!!!! That's an rather unusual track to crossover to top the R&B charts, no? Mechanical, precision tooled--pretty much the opposite of "SOUL" !!! It's gonna top the Pop chart soon also.

The Cover List:

HOW HIGH THE MOON
BABY FACE
SUNNY
TANGERINE
SUMMER PLACE '76
DRIVE MY CAR
OUR DAY WILL COME
CARAVAN
PEANUT VENDOR
FRENESI
BRAZIL
TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT (Jimmy Ruffin disco hit earlier in the year)
IT'S THE SAME OLD SONG (The Four Tops/1965/#5 Pop)
DATE WITH THE RAIN
CAN'T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU (Frankie Valli/1967/#2 Pop)
LITTLE DRUMMER BOY (Harry Simeone Chorale/ #2 Pop/1958; returned in 1959 (#13); 1960 (#15); 1961 (#24); 1962 (#28.)--the gift record that keeps on giving royalties!!! :P
VOLARE (cover of Dean Martin's Americanized version of the original Italian "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)"; the Italian language version was #1 in the USA for 5 weeks by Italian singer Domenico Modugno. That kinda thing doesn't happen anymore, eh?

What was the last foreign language record that topped the U.S. charts? Uhhhhhhhhhhh..."The Macarena"?????

CLUB DIALOG by Tom Moulton

Column #56: 11/15/75

(New York) Mercury has given out a few test pressings of the new Ralph Carter single and these are some of the reactions: Tom Savarese of 12 West and Richie Kacznor of Hollywood both say "Extra, Extra" is much stronger than his last disco smash "When You're Young And In Love."

The label is again releasing a short and long version and there will be special 12-inch test pressings made available to the Record Pool as well as other disco DJs around the country.

RCA is rush-releasing a special single mix of "African Symphony" by Henry Mancini, taken from his just released "Symphonic Soul" LP. The production on this record is so full it sounds like it's from a movie--a very strong production by RCA's Joe Reisman . RCA is also releasing an updated version of the Chiffons hit "One Fine Day" by Julie Budd.

The record has the Gloria Gaynor sound with vocal backgrounds like "Dreaming A Dream"--a strong record. There are several other strong releases from RCA: The Main Ingredient's "Shame On The World," which is a lot like "This Will Be"; Vicki Sue Robinson's "Never Gonna Let You Go," a strong uptempo soul shouting song; and "Chloe," a standard done up disco style by Cy Coleman The latter sounds like something the Ray Conniff Singers should have done. [Is that a compliment, I wonder? :P ]

[Looks like the RCA A&R guys visited Tom this week, eh?]

Brunswick has just released the new Maryann Farra & Satin Soul single "Never Gonna Leave You." This is the group's second release. They used to be known as De-Lit-Ful. The record has a very similar sound to the Joneses' "Sugar Pie Guy."

Event is releasing The Fatback Band single "(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop" which is about the current dance craze. It's from their new LP which will be released the first part of December. It is a very funky sound and a good dance record.

20th Century has just released a single by Gerri Grainger--a version of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." Bob Crewe has done a fine production. It has a strong feel like "Swearin' To God." There will be a special 12-inch test pressing made for the discos of a special mix which is 8:52, and, it is mixed up just right for the clubs.

(Thanks to shootyourshot for providing this last part)

The Temptations new LP on Motown, "House Party," has two good disco cuts: "You Can't Stop A Man In Love," uptempo and very melodic, and "Keep Holding On", which is much harder sounding and more of an R&B record.

Chocolate City Records, a new label distributed by Casablanca, has just released its first single, "Find My Way" by The Players [Cameo]. It sounds a lot like "Dreaming A Dream". (And I bet it tastes like chicken.!!!) :P

Also, just released is Shake Me, Wake Me".....by, uh wut'ser name????, uh, oh yeah.........................................

.......BARBRA STREISAND :P

__________________________________________________ __

The Big Tease:

Next week, six charts are printed, with the 6th chart being the Top 10 Bestselling Imports in NYC. This gives us some unusual titles, most probably known only to Jussik!!!

There will be 20 records debuting, 6 returning, minus 16 dropoffs, for a new record total of 58 items. (Most of the imports disappear the following week except for "Lady Bump" and "I Could Have Danced All Night" by the Biddu Orchestra.)

South Shore Commission's LP produces 3 tracks that constitute a 3-way (tie) for #4. Salsoul Orchestra gains strength....and Penny McLean leaps up to #10.

New titles from the Blackbyrds, Miss Vicki Sue Robinson,(before the "beat is turned around") Fatback Band, Mike (!) Zager & the Moon Band, Joey Porello, Zakariah, Nanette Workman, the Temptations & a singer known as Julie Budd....who is only listed as "Julie" in LA. ("Will & Grace" fans should get "JUST JULIE" ... think 'Just Jack" and the jazz hands!!!!)
:P :P :P :P :P

OK, that's enuf.

Julie was a teenage-Barbra wannabe (in the Sixties) who never really made it--but she did appear a lot on Ed Sullivan and Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin and shows like that in the Sixties & Seventies. Lotsa "cabaret" appearances in NYC & LA, etc.....I think she's still around today.

She was a very good singer, BUT looked and sounded very- Barbra--unfortunately, there already WAS THEE Barbra.

here's the AMG bio:

Julie Budd is one of those enduring talents who has outlived her almost premature early success. Discovered at age 12 in the late 1960s, she played her first engagement in the Catskills that same year, and was appearing on the Merv Griffin Show six months later; she subsequently became a fixture on the talk show and supper club circuits. From her precocious beginnings, co-starring with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Liberace, George Burns, and Bob Hope, Budd developed into a sophisticated interpreter of popular songs, comparable to Sinatra or Torme, playing all of the best venues from Las Vegas to the Catskills. Budd has also done some acting, principally in association with the Circle Repertory Theater and Playwright's Horizons in New York, as well as occasional film appearances, but her main activity in recent years has been her one-woman show, which also yielded her album Pure Imagination, issued in 1997. If You Could See Me Now followed in the spring of 2000.

Talking of Barbra, what's 'Shake Me Wake Me' like?

..& talking of the Catskills, it makes me think of an amusing tale that Mel Brooks tells on chat shows of elderly holiday makers there, eating huge meals with lots of rich food & then passing out when they try to sing along with the ever-increasing key changes of 'Dancing In The Dark' during cabaret! :o

It's a cover of the Sixties Four Tops hit ("somebody shake me/wake me, when it's over when it's over")....I only have the LP version which is short & sorta weak; BUT there is a 12" version that I downloaded back in that Napster days...which was longer & somewhat better. I think Nicky attested to this at some point here. I've never seen this anywhere. Didn't even know a 12" was released til i saw it on Napster.

The LP version is on her "Lazy Afternoon" LP, when she was working with Rupert ("Pina Colada Song") Holmes.

P.S. my fave Catskills line is from Woody Allen in my fave movie of all time Annie Hall....

something about the Jews complaining about how bad the food is at this particular restaurant in the Catskills.

One woman says to her friend: "The food here is terrible."

The friend nods and says...

"Yes ....and such small portions!!!"

It's better coming outta Woody's mouth, believe me.

My fave Jewish joke:

What's a Jewish "dilemma"??????

"FREE HAM."

(told to me by a Jew, for the record.)

Thanx for the barbra info. I remember those lines by Woody Allen & you're right, they sound so much better when a Jew tells 'em! I went to see Joan Rivers in concert a few months ago & she tells some brilliant jew jokes but alas i can't remember 'em at the moment (my memory's going now I'm getting into my 40s! :( You wait & see, I'll be looking at cardigans in shops soon & thinking 'hmm that looks comfy'!)

Oh, DD. For you, I'll spill the beans.

Julie Budd's record is a cover of "One Fine Day" (see the Moulton column) which I don't remember, but it does quite well.

Nanette Workman's record is "If It Wasn't For The Money" on Atco.

Ok, feel better now?

That's the track DD; it's pleasant isn't it but nothing spectacular. I didn't know Patti Austin did it; how interesting. I'd love to hear Patti & Frankie Valli's version of 'Our Day Will Come' as I love that song.(I've got a version by Dionne Warwick which is nice).
