Is there anyone out there that might have gone to a dance at the Harvey Milk Center, Patti La Belle performed it may have been June 1982, I just can't remember much other than Patti singing over the rainbow. Like some info of which DJ's played etc.

I was there. Patti killed my speed buzz with her program of ballads. Dancing feets needs da beat.

This was the first dance event at the Moscone Center. As I recall, it was January and cold as hell outside and they had a massive mess at the coat check. :x

I'm not sure who the DJ was--but I'd hazard a guess that maybe it was Michael Garrett??? (Incidentally, Garrett was at the Troc Reunion party looking very Mad Max-ish with a mohawk and a red hanky hanging outta his back pocket!!!). :D

Maybe Keefe will remember.

I just realized the poster said it was at the "Harvey Milk Center"...but it was actually the other guy shot by Dan White, the city's mayor George Moscone, whose name is on this convention center.

"Harvey's" (named for Mr. Milk) is a restaurant on Castro & 18th st...where the old Elephant Walk used to be.

Just keepin' it real.

I thought Michael Garrett looked more like a Kewpie doll with that little point of hair sticking up! I always loved his style as a DJ.

Hmmm...maybe I got Michael Garrett mixed up with another DJ...Keefe said he had a mohawk...so I thought he was the guy talking to Jorge Martinez (a DJ from Badlands)...I did see a guy with just a little tuft of hair in the front and a shaved head...was that Michael???? :o

The Mad Max-ish guy talking to Jorge (Hor-hay) was HOOOOTTT!!! :P :P :P

Sorry Guys being a foreigner from Australia I was not sure what the name of the centre was. I remember escalators and was the center under grass or something. I hope it was not just some strange chemical trip and it was all a dream!lol

Mark, Eclipse is correct about Michael Garrett!

As for the Moscone Center party, I recall Patti LaBelle was in town for "Your Arms Too Short To Box With God". Originally, the word was she was going to lip sync some songs, but instead she surprised all of us with live versions along with the singers from the show. I thought she was fabulous!

However, the cement floor to the Moscone Center was something else. A whole bunch of people (including myself) had major back aches the next day! :x

I went to this event :D

Can't remember exactly how and why though .... but I must have been involved somehow .....delivering stuff or helping with the set up ...... because I recall being there when the first song started and wondering if this large auditorium was really going fill up with enough people and be transformed into this large a dancefloor .....
The opening song was "LET'S GET STARTED " by Voyage which was brand new at the time ...

I also was not much of a Patti Labelle fan yet . This was not during one of her peak periods ... and of course not remotely considered the legend she now is ..... It was two years before "IF ONLY YOU KNEW " came out and won me over ..... a song that would've put me front and center .... But then she probably wouldn't have done an event like this during a time that her career was stronger...

I didn't appreciate this special setting and opportunity in which to hear an artist perform .
Certainly not this sort of cabaret style anyway... thought it sort of interupted the flow .... Just remember her nasal-like wailing as it swirled through the place .... & her sort of scat rendition of "OVER THE RAINBOW " a tune which endeared her to the boys ..... and me wishing they'd get back to the disco ......

Wish I 'd been more appreciative of someone who graciously showed up and put out and gave support to "the community " ......
