Default Won't Get Fooled Again!!!

Yeah, famous last words.

Yesterday, at Amoeba Records here in LA... wondering if they had received that "Philadelphia Uncovered" that I'd inquired about last week and that they told me was "on order"...I came across what I thought was a another release of Larry Levan @ The Paradise Garage. It had a photo of Larrry on the cover, a purple background and absolutely no song listings. It promised 2 cds and a booklet inside. Next to it was the first Import of "Larry Levan: Live At The Paradise Garage" that I'd paid around $25 for at Tower Records in 2000. Ths was now selling for $9.00!!!!

So I picked up the "new" compilation, thrilled to find out what was inside!!!!

Then my eyes caught another compilation: 70's Groove. Hmmmm.....some interesting tracks on here...I have most of em, BUT wait, do I believe my eyes???!!! Over 3 CDs, track #29 of 30 is "Was That All It Was" by Jean Carn!!!!!!!

Geez, 30 tracks over 3 cds--that's enough for at least 7 minute versions of each track, I surmised.

So I bought it.

Couldn't wait to get home. Ripped the plastic off the Larry Levan CD and I see "Bourgie, Bourgie" as the first cut. RIP-OFF!!!!!!! It's a re-packaging of the first Paradise Garage set...with NO TRACK LISTINGS!!!!!

Then I open the 70's Groove CD....pull out cd # 3 and stick it in the cd player....track no #9.....no wait, presss #10 and back it up top the end of #9 (WTAIW).....Cross my fingers.....3:23!!!!! They had time for the 16+ minute "Love In C Minor...but this track gets the LP edit version.

So here's the 411 on this CD (some good stuff here, most of it I already had, BUT...)

1. Strut Your Funky Stuff performed by Frantique - 3:38
2. Keep on Dancin' performed by Gary's Gang - 7:39

OK, here's the gist in a nutshell.

The version of "Was That All It Was" featured on the new 3 cd compilation is only 3:23 in length. No timings are listed on the cd. So, if you think you might be getting the 12" extended mix....you're not.

That's it.

This is the darn trouble with buying compilations. Certain record companies see them as a good cash cow to be milked to death!! They keep on releasing them with THE SAME tracks on, time after time. So you could end up with three copies of a song across three different releases. I personally, would NOT purchase them unless they have a good pedigree such as the Mastercuts series which came out during the '90s - or even the epitome (in the UK at least) of compilations Morgan Khan's fantastic StreetSounds series.

This may sound defeatist to some, but, I actually decided about two years back...to stop buying music for the forseeable future.
:-? Until I can sort out the vinyl mountain I have anyways.

Morgan Khan was a genius!! Streetsounds were the best dance compilation series ever (in europe at at least)!! I just wish I had them all but sadly I only have 5 editions

StreetSounds was great up until the late '80s, as a compilation is only as good as the material on it. Towards the start of the '90s, there was a lot of crap vinyl around...By that I mean song quality.

Actually, "I Won't Be Fooled Again" would be a great title for an uptempo sort of track. Imagine the lyrics:

"I won't be fooled again - No no! I won't be fooled again.
I won't be fooled again - yeah girl - I won't be fooled again.
You're headed through that door, 'cause I don't want you no more."
:D
Get someone to do a Colonel Abrahms type vocal, and it will fly.
