I wondered if the Wilford Brimley reference might be lost on non-Americans. Wilford is an American character actor who used to do commercials for Quaker Oats.

His bio....

Corpulent, rumpledlooking character actor, most frequently seen in glasses and bushy mustache, who startled moviegoers with his deceptively simple portrayal of a hapless nuke-plant employee in The China Syndrome (1979). He's been busy ever since, promising to become the screen's foremost delineator of lovable curmudgeons, notably in Cocoon (1985) and Cocoon: The Return (1988), and in a long-running series of Quaker Oats commercials. He occasionally essays sharper characters, such as the show-stopping lawyer in Absence of Malice (1981), but is most effective in softer characterizations. He starred in the family-oriented TV series "Our House" (1986-88) and was also memorable in The Electric Horseman (1979), The Thing (1982), Tender Mercies (1983), Country, The Natural, The Stone Boy (all 1984), and End of the Line (1987, a leading role). More recently he's had juicy supporting roles in The Firm and Hard Target (both 1993).

Wilford played on the mayor characters in Cocoon.

 Well, my order is in. Can't wait to hear it.

On 18 April 2004, history was made in San Francisco when the legendary club Trocadero Transfer was reopened for a one-night-only celebration of a bygone era of all-night dancing, magnificently choreographed lighting, and most of all, the music that was the soundtrack to a generation.

Orchestrated by a handful of devoted San Francisco locals and former club employees who went out on a limb to revive the magic of Trocadero, it was not clear until the last moments whether or not this labour of love would be fully appreciated by the public. Appreciated it was! Former Trocadero die-hards and young club kids alike attended in droves and the most common observation was of the pervasive positive energy and excitement throughout the party’s SRO eight-hour run. “The smiles on the faces of everyone at the party were proof positive that this event was needed,” observed one happy dancer. Fans of the Troc from as far afield as Los Angeles, Mexico, New York, London, and the Continent flew in for this very special celebration. Please visit www.remembertheparty.com

And now, “REMEMBER – The Party” is available on an all-digital six CD set!

This special first-time offer is available only through direct mail order.

marky had asked earlier about a song that stumped him, and i replied that there was a female vocal that i didn't recognize.

well, the famous san francisco/castro CD store mentioned earlier in this thread now stocks the Trocadero/Remember the Party/Robbie Leslie set. i haven't bought it yet, but i took a quick look at the tracklisting, and i think i found the unfamiliar title:

Sylvia Mason - "Hello Superduper Star" - it's the B-side to her 1980 Carerre UK 12" "We've Gotta Dance."

i remember a hard-core Saint friend telling me i should pick up this 12", but i never did until now. it's good!

Sylvia Mason sang on a lot of disco records, but never got much attention until she started touring and recording with the Pet Shop Boys.

Thanks for the info Barry. :D

I've never heard of that Sylvia Mason record. :o

I have a couple other things by her: "Extraterrestrial Lover" (extra-celestial, extra-terrestrial lover")
and I believe something titled "Instant Love" (not the Cheryl Lynn tune).

Didn't Sylvia Mason sing on the Voyage records?

sylvia mason did sing with voyage and other disco acts.

the other songs you mention were by sylvia love, who has a very different (breathy, spaced-out) voice.

Yeah, my 'Voyage' girl. I pulled this 12" just last week while looking for something else. Had forgotten about her. I think I appreciate the song more now than then because I loved her laid back background vocals with the 'V-boys'. :D
