Hey Beary Barry,

We must have been dancing near each other if you stayed til the bitter end...but I don't recall your ensemble. :o I left when he started "Last Dance"...Honey, I'd danced my last dance several dances earlier. I envied the youngsters on the speed. I thought, "that used ta be me!!" Especially one guy who danced almost all night on the stage in a white tank top, then a white t-shirt; he danced with enviable energy & style & grace & precision almost to the end. As he was leaving I almost pulled an Estelle Reiner in "When Harry Met Sally" and blurted out... "I'll have what she's having"...but I held me nasty tongue. Then as the "morning set" took off-- there were several twinks (maybe deceptive in that light) in leather chaps & motorcycle caps who were speeding their tight little titties off.

I was in basic black in homage to Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast At Tiffany's". (Except for the Danish, the cup of coffee and the tiara. Next time I'm bringing the tiara too.)

Barry, I remember seeing that t-shirt! I wish I knew it was you! Too bad you didn't say you were the shirtless guy with a cowboy hat, muscle on top of muscles, and his jeans just hanging low enough...

As Mark mentioned, I was tasked with spreading the corn meal on the dance floor (and later, mixed with some glitter!). Jeff complained I put too much. I thought that since it was sprinkling outside, the corn meal was needed to soak up any water on the floor.

There were two nice Pioneer CD players (with pitch control) that Ron brought in for Robbie to use. So, he literally could use his CDs like vinyl! Those binders were HEAVY! I found that out when I drove Robbie and his friend back to their hotel. I felt so bad because Robbie lugged his bag full of the binders about a block to my car. If I had known, I would have had them wait in front of the club.

You must have been to Medium Rare late on Saturday when Mark, Jeff and I were there because we saw the same Robbie discs. I was later told that Robbie had a 3 disc set of Morning Music at Medium Rare, "So Beautiful." One of the discs starts out with Yvonne Fair "It Should Have Been Me"!

Finally, didn't you love the mini cluster of mirrored balls? That happened by accident. White Light Productions tried to recreate the cluster from the old days. However, due to the current ceiling configuration, that wasn't possible. So, they planned to have the one giant disco ball. However, due to unforseen problems with the motor, they were going to scratch the giant one and have a few small ones. With hours to spare on Sunday, they finally located a new motor and the giant disco ball went up with the two smaller ones - so, a little taste of the cluster from days of yore and all by accident! The Disco Gods were watching over us this weekend.

Also, many people noticed the giant disco ball on the floor near the staircase where the orignal spiral staircase was located. That belonged to the Glas Kat (can you believe they had it located towards the corner of the room??!) and it was taken down in the hope the motor worked and could be used. Nope!

DD,

So you think I don't love the early disco??!!!! :o

I looooooves it the most!!! I just discovered this 1976 track from Whirlwind called "Full Time Thing (From Dusk To Dawn)"--now that's my kinda music. It's on this "Roulette Disco" cd I just got--from the UK, of course.

We talk about the early 1980s stuff cause that's what we have on tape. I started dancing in SF at Buzzby's on Polk Street in 1975. I hold that music in the highest esteem. I'm pissed I didn't get to dance to "Mighty High" and "Lady Bump" and "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel". That would have been heaven. :D

Maybe next time.

What I liked most is that Robbie played music from all the disco eras....that's why I almost peed my pants when he played "You Little Trustmaker" by The Tymes. What a treat.

In fact, I'd like an evening devoted only to the early 1970s--using, say 1976 as cut off...just to hear those classic R&Bish disco records. I know Robbie has them in his collection.

I don't even know what to write. Just reading all your comments makes me sad that I couldn't be there. To meet all of you and hear Robbie again would have been just an awesome event. I knew Robbie would have you dancing. Never any doubt in my mind. The man can play and he's a gentleman to boot. Class act all the way around. Glad you had the chance to meet him. Maybe next time you'll get really lucky and have a chance to hear some sleaze. For now, I'll just wait for the CD's to come out.

BTW, what is this "MEDIUM RARE" you keep mentioning and Robbie's CD's being there? Something special before the party or what? Inquiring minds... :D

Hey Nicky,

Medium Rare is a cd store on Market Street on the Castro that caters to the kinda music we like. They have lotsa old disco stuff/female & male DIVAS, etc. on cd that you rarely see anywhere. Robbie brought some of his Rarities & Lost series and some party cds to sell there. They were mostly gone by Saturday when we visited the store.

His mixing is just flawless.

Mark, Jeff and I wished you were there too, Nicky! We suspect you would have appreciated hearing the Tymes "You Little Trustmaker" as much as we did!

Medium Rare Records is a wonderful independent record store on Market St. near Castro. It's been around for awhile but recently was bought out by 3 guys, Mike, Greg and Mike (MGM). They've taken the success of the former owner to the next level by carrying a large inventory of disco CDs from around the world.

I forgot to add that part of the magic of this evening is that Marky was there! I had somebody to scream and yell about the same songs. It does make a difference. Now Mark, you just need to familiarize yourself with "Driving Me Wild" by the Stylistics (Nicky, sounded like Robbie played around with this tune also!).

I'm surprised that Robbie played some house remixes of classic tunes rather than the originals.

Did any of you see people you haven't seen in years?

Did you meet anyone from the board that you hadn't met before?

Hi NRG! A wholehearted "Yes," to both of your questions!!! You should have been one of them.

Medium Rare is an international treasure. Their beautiful front window displays feature a fantastic selection of rare disco CDs and are always amazing. Bring your cameras.

I can't find any current disco nights anywhere in San Francisco! Help!

What was the behind-the-scenes consensus/analysis of the party?

Will there be a sequel?

Discovery,

"Nobody Knows the Answer" to your query. "I ain't got no magic mirror". All I can say is "maybe" there will be another one --but not anytime too soon. So stock up on cds from Medium Rare!!!!

I don't live in SF anymore...so I don't know the club scene...BUT I think if any other club was playing classic disco we'd know about it. Otherwise, the folks at the former Troc on Sunday night might not have acted as thankful for this special opportunity.

Next time, IF there's a next time, I hope they can get the space on a Saturday night. Lotsa people would have stayed longer if they didn't have to work the next day.

As for Robbie playing "house mixes" of old disco...I certainly would have preferred to have heard the original records...but I must say it didn't seem to deter the dancers. The floor was mostly packed all night--no matter what he played.

The current club configuration is problematic---everything used to be open and spacious and now walls have been built and glass windows constructed to close off the upper floor and bars and banquettes built on former dance floor space.....so it ain't the same.

However, it was the former Troc space and the fact that the party could actually be held in that space--made it all the more special. People were having a wonderful time. I've never seen so many smiling, happy people in one space. No attitude...no pretense... no "too cool for school" demeanor --just "thank you for the music" smiles. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
