Thanks, Discomanic, i just found that fascinating and 'somewhat bizarre' history of 'Disco Kicks', a true 'subterranean cult record' ! Apparently about as far back as mid 1980, the Boystown Gang version was the b-side of their 'You're The One' 12" (promo) in 1981 before being remixed for inclusion on the 'Disc Charge' LP.

The party was excellent. Could we do this every week/month please?

Pizzazz, I thought of you during Remember Me/
Ain't No Mountain High Enough and Disco Kicks.

Where else in San Francisco can we hear real disco music?

Discovery...we didn't "discover" you at the party!!!!! :(

Didn't you see Keefe sprinkling cornmeal & glitter on the dancefloor?

Keefe & I danced with Bobby Viteritti himself to "Life Is Music" by The Ritchie Family and "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by Bonnie Pointer. What fun!!!! :D :D :D

The whole thing was recorded (except for maybe half an hour--Robbie forgot to change the cd)....so it will be available later.

I missed the first hour or so...(Jeff & Bob thought it would be most uncouth to arrive at 6:00...hmmmm) so we got there at about 7:15 or so. "San Francisco" by VP was playing as we entered and the dance floor was filled. Sadly the "dancefloor" is about half it's former size.......

I'll post more songs I heard later. I should work now.

OK, it's almost quittin' time. I'll post some more stuff.

The Whistler asked me if Bobby Viteritti actually got to DJ and the answer is "YES"!!!! Robbie stepped aside around midnight for awhile and Bobby took over for his classic mix of "Follow Me" with the famous gongs back & forth and into "The Break" and into Tantra.....then Robbie took back the reins.

What did Robbie play?

Well, I missed the first hour or so...Keefe said these were played...

HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL - Tavares
MY SWEET SUMMER SUITE - Love Unlimited Orchestra
FEEL THE NEED IN ME - Detroit Emeralds
THE WIZARD OF OZ MEDLEY - (movie soundtrack excerpts)

when I got there...

SAN FRANCISCO/ IN HOLLYWOOD - Village People
AFTER DARK - Pattie Brooks
JUST KEEP THINKING ABOUT YOU - Tata Vega
I REMEMBER YESTERDAY - Donna Summer (a sorta housey mix)
ON THE RADIO - Donna Summer (another housey mix)
DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY - Thelma Houston
YOU LITTLE TRUSTMAKER - The Tymes (what a surprise!!)
NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE - Gloria Gaynor
HOLD YOUR HORSES - First Choice (YEEEEESSSSS!!!)

Paul Parker (a friend of the producers) actually recorded a new song for the party...REMEMBER THE TIME (I think it was called)--Paul was there, but Keefe said he actually left before they played his song!!!

towards peaktime...

SOUVINIRS - Voyage
MAGIC BIRD OF FIRE - Salsoul Orchestra (sounded FAAAB!!!)
THIS WILL BE A NIGHT TO REMEMBER - Eddie Holman!!!!! (Keefe made sure they played this!!!)

WITHOUT YOUR LOVE/ALIVE WITH LOVE - Cut Glass
REMEMBER ME/AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH - Boystown Gang
(YOU MAKE ME FEEL) MIGHTY REAL - Sylvester
DON'T STOP - Sylvester
OH WHAT A NIGHT - Giorgio Moroder
YOU'RE THE FIRST THE LAST, MY EVERYTHING - Barry White
DISCO KICKS - Boystown Gang
THAT'S THE MEANING/BOOGIE MOTION - Beautiful Bend
JUMP - Pointer Sisters
BREAKAWAY - Watson-Beasley
LOVIN IS REALLY MY GAME - Brainstorm
BABY I'M A STAR - Prince
DISCO INFERNO - The Trammps (another housey mix under the original vocals)

around 1:00am the "morning set"--definitely NOT SLEAZE....it was swirling strings and flourishing fans (better duck!!!)...not bump & grind time...I recall

LOVE IS IN THE AIR - Jean- Paul Young
BEGIN THE BEGUINE - Johnny Mathis
SHINE ON SILVER MOON - Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr.
FOREVER CAME TODAY - The Jacksons
NATIVE NEW YORKER - Odyssey
I CAUGHT YOUR ACT - Hues Corporation
BOURGIE, BOURGIE - Ashford & Simpson
RED LIGHT - Linda Clifford
SORRY - Grace Jones
Robbie even played the ENTIRE "YESTERDAY ONCE MORE" by The Carpenters, fer christs sake!!!! (it was the theme of the evening ...remembering, I guess)
at the end it was snippets of slow intros spliced together

TRY TO REMEMBER- Gladys Knight
a slow live intro to THE MAIN EVENT - Barbra Streisand
MACARTHUR PARK - Donna
NO MORE TEARS (ENOUGH IS ENOUGH) Donna & Babs
into LAST DANCE

and Finally.....

DANCING QUEEN - ABBA :P

The songs I expected/wanted to hear and didn't?

HARMONY - Suzi Lane
WAS THAT ALL IT WAS - Jean Carn
YOU CAN DO IT - Al Hudson & The Partners
LA BAMBA - Antonia Rodriguez
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY - Giorgio
I FEEL LOVE - Donna
and sooooooooo many others. :(

(This is off the top o'me head....I have a longer list at home).

Also:
"Baby Love" - USA-European Connection
"The Visitors" - ABBA
"Reunited" - Peaches & Herb

Looking forward to Marky's longer list at home.

The crowd was particularly enthusiastic for both Cut Glass tracks.

This can't be a one-time event.

Where in San Francisco can we get our disco fix?

. . . don't forget the instrumental version of Paradise Island by the Wonder Woman Band. for the longest time i couldn't remember what it was and i kept hoping he'd bring the vocal in so i could figure it out. it was torture! he never did, but i solved the riddle just as he mixed into another track.

phew!

Ah sfbeary!!! Welcome back!!!

So you were there!!! :D

I thought I might see you there--but you eluded my sight, I guess.

I was just gonna post that I'd forgotten the instrumental version of PARADISE ISLAND!!!!! Tooooo fuuuunnneee.

Now there were 2 songs (played between 9-12, I'd guess) that I couldn't figure out---one a female vocal & one a male vocal--from the mid-80s I'd guess. Maybe Saint stuff??? :o

Any thoughts on what they might be????

ha-ha - i think i was puzzled by the same records!

there was one song that had the word "remember" featured (besides eddie holman), and given that you or someone else posted that there was supposed to be a new paul parker track created for the event, i think this one might have been that.

you didn't mention Together In Electric Dreams by Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder - that was probably the most recent record he played (aside from the remixes).

speaking of which, i spoke to robbie leslie toward the end of the night and he explained that he created the remix of "It's Raining Men" by combining the weather girls' version with geri "ginger spice" halliwell's version.

throughout the night, he was spinning cds that he had created from vinyl. that's why you didn't hear much surface noise - he explained that he put them all into his computer and removed the pops. in many cases, he re-edited the tracks and added sfx. (didn't you love what he did to "loving is really my game" ?!?!?!?!) he showed me his books of cds - most of the cds had one track each on them with the bpms, length, and i think the keys printed on the cds. i did notice that he had an extended version of "harmony" in his book but he never played it - you should've requested it! - he did play my friend's request of "native new yorker."

in retrospect, i wish i had rushed the booth and asked about those mystery songs. i remember one of them had girls singing "party on" - that narrows it down to, oh, maybe several thousand.

"You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life" - perfect lyrics from the last song that Robbie played on Sunday night! I can't even begin to describe how wonderful this evening turned out to be.

First off, Mark and I racked our brains trying to remember all of the songs that were played. He listed most of them but he forgot Love Unlimited "My Suite Summer Suite," Bionic Boogie "Risky Changes," Bear Essence "The Big Hurt" (which was produced by the producers of the Remember party!), James Wells "True Love Is My Destiny," Mighty Clouds Of Joy "Mighty High," The Raes "A Little Lovin'," and I think Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel".

Unlike Marky, I'm not complaining about anything I heard because I'm thankful to hear these tunes on a great sound system mixed by an incredibly talented DJ, the wonderful Robbie Leslie!

By the way, the party was very close to a sell out crowd (current capacity of Glas Kat is 700)! Isn't it great to know there's still a big market for DISCO?

I'll post some behind the scene stories a little later but I'll tell you now that Robbie was too hot for San Francisco. The night after he arrived at the beautiful Monaco Hotel, they had to evacuate around 12:45 am because the fire alarms went off! Fortunately, it wasn't anything serious.

Hey Barry! As Mark commented, we wondered if you were at the party on Sunday. Could we have passed each other in the booth (I had my old Troc card hanging around my neck)? I too saw Robbie's binders of CDs and I noticed they only had one song on each. I also commented to a couple of friends that the songs sounded remastered (I thought he was adjusting the sound in the booth) so it's nice to know it wasn't my imagination. When we were packing up at the end of the evening, I noticed that Robbie had one vinyl record - "Hold On To My Love" (which we know is one of most well know remixes). I wondered why he had that since I thought he dealt exclusively with CDs now.

Were you able to get any of the CDs he had on sale at Medium Rare? I heard they pretty sold out in a few hours!

As for Paul Parker, Chris told me Paul had to leave the party 5 minutes before they played his new song (recorded just for this event!)! I asked why Paul didn't perform the number and he told me that he's retired from the business.

hey keefelc,

i'm sure we all must've been on the floor all at the same time - i was wearing a blue t-shirt with an appliqué of bert and ernie looking as if they're about to kiss (authentic sesame street wear, i kid you not!)

about the cds in his binders - he explained that he puts one track on each cd so he can still think like a dj - although i noticed that he had them alphabetized, rather than in order of bpm.

i did manage to get at medium rare one of robbie's *full throttle* cds, which is a good hi-bpm 2cd set (with that epic version of "loving is really my game"), as well as one of the saint rarities & lost cds that was full of re-edits from the early-to-mid '70s - 7"s with vocal and instrumental sides that he merged together. i think he played those occasionally - i ran into him as he was leaving the bathroom, and before i finished my business, one track flawlessly segued into the next!

the last time i saw paul parker perform was at the first billboard dance music (as opposed to disco) conference, which was conveniently held in sf sometime in the mid-90s. it was the first time i saw kristine w perform, and the only time i saw m people - i don't think they ever toured america.
