Early Disco Records on the A.M. Dial Hi Guys! Like many of you, I grew up listenting to A.M. radio. I'm a fan of very early disco music. I've never been able to put a finger on "what was the first disco record" played on A.M. radio here in the United States that made the Top 40. Most would agree that it had to be one of the records produced by Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff and their exquisite Sound of Philadelphia. I've also heard that Manu Debango's Soul Makossa earns that honor. Casey Kasem was once quoted as saying it was Rock The Boat by the Hughes Corporation. But who knows??!! I remember in 1975 listening to my A.M. station here in the southwest when the DJ announced a new record...He went on to say that it was really different and was coming via the east coast straight out of the discos...He played a song called:
"Street Talk" by the B.C. Generation. Does anyone remember that song? It didn't chart the Top 40 but it was the very first disco song that "I" heard on the A.M. dial aside from the Sound of Philly records, and the "rock" records: Rock Your Baby and Rock The Boat, which were out a year earlier. To me it seemed that "Street Talk" was pure disco and nothing else...Where the Sound of Philly records were cross over records from the soul charts onto the pop charts...I'm not saying that that didn't make them disco records as they were but "Street Talk" seemed to exclusively belong to the disco charts as did: "More, More, More" by the Andrea True Connection, which I heard not long after "Street Talk". Any thoughts here? Take Care... 8) Mario |
