Personally I can't believe that Francisd Grasso was beat mixing in the late '60s/early '70s. Surely others would have tried to emulate him, so why not scores of others that could beat mix by the time Disco really arrived? No, the early 'mix' records and tapes were segues only.
Others DID emulate him, because Francis taught Steve D'Acquisto and Michael Cappello how to do it and then it spread to Nicky Siano, Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, David Mancuso and Walter Gibbons who each added their own touches to mixing...especially Walter who was essentially beat juggling WAY before anyone else. This was all in 1969 to 1970. I do not use only book references as proof, David Mancuso himself backs up the history as does Nicky Siano.

Thanks for those kind words, my atipodean friend.

BTW: The DJ in Marbella was called Daniel, which I found out through these boards some months ago from his ex-wife. She confirmed that he'd been mixing for years before I ever saw him in '74.

I don't know. I bought these albums more than 25 years ago. I guess that you should have a try with e-bay or something similar...

The Dadaists made mixes in the 20's, with industrial noises arranged into rhythmic series of klings, klangs and yes, thumps. Could this actually have been the birth of dance music as we understand it today as they performed dance moves to these sonic collages at parties way back then, too - ?

Of course there's a lot of self-aggrandizing in the reminisces of these senior DJs, Grasso included. But the proof of their work is not only the quotes from books-- Grasso was seen at work at the Sanctuary in the the film Klute, and his two-minute mix of Chicago's "I'm A Man" with Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" was available for listening at the "Decade of Saturday Nights" disco show that premiered at Seattle's music museum. I and many others got to hear this 1969 bit of DJing some 30 years after the fact.
