Recently bought a video by Ian Levine on the Northern Soul scene in UK & it features quite a few disco artists like Gene Chandler, Crown Heights affair, & Barbara Pennington doing '24 Hours a day' (which Ian wrote himself b4 his hi-nrg phase). Its fascinating if a little cheap & tacky on the production side ( hey, at least its disco so I refuse to knock it!). If anyone wants to find it, it's called 'The Strange World of Northern Soul'.

Even though I am a Southerner born and bred (though my brother has moved up to Manchester) I used to go to a few of the Northern Soul club nights that came down South. I have also bought a few Northern Soul compilations in the past.

I remember that a numer of 70's records were played both in the Northern Soul scene and the southern soul/funk disco scene.

To name but a few:
Lennie Williams - Choosing You
Normon Connors/Aquarian Dream - Phoenix (I think that was discovered by a Northern Soul DJ)
Trammps - Hold Back The Night
Billy Ocean - Love Really Hurts Without You

I am sure that there are many more tunes that made it in both scenes.

Anyway, I shall look out for Ian Levine's video ...

Ian Levine is a hero of mine. He started as a leading DJ in the Northern soul scene & went on to write & produce New York disco records in the late 70's, then was a leading player in the early 80's Hi-energy scene going on to produce pop acts like Take That & Pasadenas. Finally he's gone back to his roots & revived the careers of old soul & Motown acts. He's a genius in my book.
