Default Double groove

Double groove, what is it and why it is?

Just came across the 12" of Pop Muzik by M and the other side holds a double groove. That is, the same side contains two songs kind of on top of each other, but they do not of course play simultaneously. I find it very hard to influence on which one I could play. :o

What is this all about? Any other records of the same method? I'm a bit confused, though it is a funny kind of trick.

I used to have that 12" - it was billed as the first of its kind. There was a techno record from a few years ago which had the same gimmick (I think it was a Reese on KMS ~ help me out here) - but it wasn't really a trend which took off!

De La Soul had one as well, billed as a '3-sided' 12".

Monty Python put out one as well, that supposedly had 4 or more concurrent tracks. The mastering engineer almost went berserk trying to cut it...

I came across the same 'Pop Muzik' 12 inch a few months ago and bought it just for fun (never saw it before).

However, it reminded me a little of a 12 inch by MDMC from 1983 I own titled 'How About It' which has a sort of 'endless' last groove (at the end of the record it keeps on playing a loop). A gimmick that is a bit similar to the double groove.

hi!

endless loops are very common in the techno scene.
speedy j. released a lp with over 40 (?) endless loops on one record, as bonus! These are really great loops, nice for djs: they can put together their own song while mixing....

also check out: dj hell "totmacher", very funny pressing!

greetings
hoelli

Oh dear there's more of those! :)

The loop thing can be usefull and is more fun. I have the 12" of DCLaRue (So much for LA) which too has this endless beat loop at the end.

The first locked groove I encountered was on Planet Patrol's 'Play At Your Own Risk'.

First time I recalled this was on a Was Not Was record that ends with a repeating high pitched test tone.

yes - these locked groove 12s were a big part of the techno scene back in the early nineties. The most obvious example i remember were the one done by Fuse (aka richie Hawtin) in 1991 (with "Substance Abuse & "FU2"). Apart from the locked groove thing, it also had different speeds on the same side, which meant you had the change from 33 to 45 in the middle of it all.
pretty annoying to say the least.

Back in the early '90s, a techno-head I used to work with who made music himself, became pretty friendly with Craig, May, etc, and would periodically go to Detroit. He met the engineer Archer who used to cut those crazy 12"s, who said they used the old lathes from the Motown days which, unlike the modern ones, just do whatever you want them to do, like locking grooves and having reverse segments, all on one side of a record. Some of the cutting configurations on these UR/KMS etc. records are just sick.

I remember having a Deborah Washington lp that had a lock groove as well. I think the lp had Stading In The Shadows of Love on it....pressed on Ariola I believe

it's the Ariola 12" of "standing in the shadows of love" that has the locked groove sound effect at the end, my LP doesn't have the locked groove.

I also remember a 12" on Buddah by Roberta Gilliam "Magic In The Music", that played from the inside groove to the outside, basically backwards.
