This is hard to imagine.... it will depend on the crowd and how late in the night is when I'd play MOVIN'

actually YOUNG MC and NEWCLEUS were in the mix... it was pretty fun. 8)

Hey efunk.
I'm trying to imagine what kind of crowd you had that could get into Shout! and "Fhitty Cent" ? :)

Well I spent the earlier part of the evening making a tape of my faves--oldies we've discussed here during the past year and newer stuff I can't get outta my head. Then I broke open a bottle of Veuve Cliquot (or was it the Korbel???    ) and played the damn tape over and over and over!!!!! At least, until HRH Donna Summer appeared on Dick Clark's NY Eve Special just after midnight. She sang an extended version of "Last Dance" and the KIDZ seemed to N-Joy her!!! Quelle surprise!!!

OK, here's my New Year's Eve creation:

1) "WHATEVER LOLA WANTS" - Sarah Vaughan (Verve Remixed 2)
2) "I'VE SEEN THAT FACE BEFORE (LIBERTANGO)"- Grace Jones (I don't think I have to explain why, do I?)
3) "WISH I DIDN'T MISS YOU SO"- Angie Stone (yeah, it's several years old now...but I still loves it).
4) "ARE YOU READY FOR LOVE"- Elton John & The Spinners (MY NEW FAVE!!!!!!)
5) "THEME FROM SHAFT" - Isaac Hayes (I wonder why???? Some people seem to think this was the start of disco!!! Can you imagine why? Well, uh, YEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!)
6) "MAKE ME BELIEVE IN YOU" - Patti Jo (my most-played song...needed to get this on another tape....the old one is wearing out!!!)
7) "LOVE'S UNKIND" - Donna Summer (Someone here (he knows who he is) asked a question elsewhere about this a while back...and the LP and the CD version are still next to the stereo & CD player!!!)
8. "BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN" - The Supremes (MY FAVE SUPREMES song...and since Donna follows "Love's Unkind" with her Supremes pastiche "Back in Love Again"...I thought I'd use the REAL THING!!!!)
9) "STONED LOVE"- The post-Ross Supremes. Listened to this recently and was amazed at what a great dance beat it has. Essential.
10) "LOVE HANGOVER" - Miss Ross in the Disconet 10+ minute version found on that second CD of the "Diana" Deluxe Edition. LOVE those new backup vocals: "I don't want, want ,want no cure, cure, cure for this love hangover"!!!!!
11) "YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON" - The Supremes (Had room for a short song....and The Supremes Anthology was just sitting there. Some have mentioned this record as being an early disco contender. I recall this playing on my transistor radio while my classmates & I were making Christmas wreaths at the bus garage in the cold November Wisconsin weather to raise money for our class!!!)

Side 2:

1) "LOVING YOU, LOSING YOU" - Phyllis Hyman (stunning Thom Bell composed instrumental buildup to a great vocal by the late, great Miss H.)
2) 'MAMA CAN'T BUY YOU LOVE" - Elton John w/ The Spinners (didn't intend to use this...but the Thom Bell magic was in the air...so, why not?)
3) "I FOUND LOVE" - Deniece Williams (I FINALLY FOUND the 12" extended mix of this Ray Parker Jr. written & produced gem on a CD compilation of hers called "Love Songs"....what a bouncy treat!!!!
4) "CRAZY IN LOVE" - Beyonce (Hey it's that horn riff!!!!...used better here than in the original Chi-Lites record, if ya ask me)
5) "ROCK YOUR BODY"- Justin Timberlake (It does recall the early Michael Jackson before he went all whack, eh?) Interesting that both the Beyonce and Timberlake records were on the first list in this thread, also!!!!! Hey, Voyage!!!! :D
6) "IN THIS WORLD" - Moby (From his "18" CD---I love the souful gospelly vocal!!!)
7) "HELLA GOOD" - No Doubt (MY FAVE SONG OF THIS CENTURY!!!!! What a beat!!! what killer hooks!!! what a perfect record!!!!
8. "IT'S MY LIFE" - No Doubt ( A very nice cover of an all-time fave. They have such good taste to cover this and not something by, say Duran Duran.) :P
9) 'IT'S MY LIFE" - Talk Talk (THE ORIGINAL 12" EXTENDED MIX by STEVE THOMPSON!!!)
10) "MUSIC'S NO GOOD WITHOUT YOU" - Cher (Now this is where I usually lose everyone    ...BUT I LOVE THIS CUT!!!! The male vocals on the chorus work me ...driving over here, I figured out who they reminded me of...now I've forgotten who the hell it was!!! Just call me Dorrie !!! Yeah, I watched "Finding Nemo" last night.
11) "HEY YA!" - Outkast (I HAD TO BUY THIS RECORD!!!!) Went to Amoeba on NY's EVE to purchase a single to make sure I could include this on my BEST OF tape. And I played it TWICE...it almost fits.

HEY YA!!!!! Happy New Year to one & all!!!!! :D

Imagine if you can several hundred people dancing oh-so-hard to "Ten Percent of Nothing" by Ten Percent. The dancefloor is dark and crowded, the lights overhead barely on but not blacked out. This intensifies the lightman's rushes on those awesome horn riffs. The instrumental section of the 12" has been playing and it's getting ready to repeat those horns. After the last horn blast an unexpected, very loud smack-mix by the DJ brings up the intro to "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by The Supremes. The lightman, keeping time with the dj, switches from bright spot rushes for the horns to colored strobes for the guitar in "...Hangin' On". You can barely hear the song for the screams coming off the dancefloor. The building is actually vibrating with energy. And the dj just confirmed what we already knew: "YKMHO" was, and is, a fierce dance track! 8)

This little bit of DISCO HISTORY was presented by Walter Gibbons on his guest night at The Gallery, NYC. The lightman: Nicky Siano --- The club's owner and dj. :D

Here's the thing Paul, the crowd was around 25-40 years old... Believe it or not, some of them like Rap... So, the older crowd sits down and the younger crowd gets up and dances....

I hope everyone had a happy new year. Unfortunately, I don't have any songs to list because I SLEPT through it all. Around 10pm, I'd made some ocean breeze martinis and I was OUT! This is the first time I've ever slept through New Year's. I really wanted to go out someplace nice but I couldn't find anyplace decent, affordable and close to home - but I'm going to a party tomorrow so I'll make up for it!

*DISCO DELIGHT*

Hey Marky! Lol The Beyonce and Justin songs were imo probably some of the best stuff from 2003...okay some might not like it lol They'll certainly always remind me of my summer holiday in Europe lol

Was the Beyonce song a cover? Or did they sample the horns from the Chi-Lites?

Rock Your Body certainly reminds me of Michael Jason in 1981-1982 lol I even thought it was a cover of a song of his. I'm not very much into Jackson's music.

Hahaha Marky LOL about not covering Duran Duran. Girls Aloud a group from the british Pop Stars show recently covered Girls On Film from Duran Duran lol and Jump from the Pointer Sisters. You can hear this last song on Love Actually and Hugh Grant even dances and sings it lol!  It's my life rules. Any more good Talk Talk songs? I like Today too. Cher's song is cool too.

I didn't party a lot on New Year's too Hustlebaby but yesterday I recovered the lost time and partied. Right e-funk and K-bee? heheheh

Hey Voyage,

The Beyonce "Crazy in Love" samples a horn part from The Chi-Lites "Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)"

AMG REVIEW: This tumultuous single warmed the fall/winter of 1970. The Eugene Record composition features Record's bird-song falsetto emoting to a pulsating groove that goes runaway train on the fade when the Chi-Lites' voices unite in jam harmony with Creadel "Red" Jones' animated bass bubbling like fresh champagne. It didn't do much on the pop charts but got good R&B play; it's also one of the songs the Chi-Lites abandoned (from their live shows) when Red left (or got kicked out) the group. — Andrew Hamilton
_______________________________________________
I don't remember this record--didn't realize until after Beyonce's record was released that I had the original on one of those "Didn't It Blow Your Mind" compilations. I listened and thought the Beyonce record used the sample to better effect than the original record. Quelle Heresy!!!!

Justin's "Rock your Body" has a Chic like groove--didn't see any sample credit in the liner notes, though...so maybe it's just an "homage" and yes it does get into pre-wacko Jacko territory like "Rock With You" mainly I guess. It's the best song on his CD, IMHO.

As far as Talk Talk--"It' My Life' is their masterpiece. Their first record that I recall was titled, strangely enough, "Talk Talk" ("all you wanna do is talk, talk"). Check that one out. Later they dropped all the dance elements from their music and became very ambient and very boring , if ya ask me. (Well, at least disappointing to me, cause I wanted another "It's My Life" from that crew)

Was delighted to see "Hey Ya!" at the top of almost all the year-end critic's 10 best singles lists. The critic for USA Today especially hit the nail on the head, saying that it's the only record in recent years that everyone seems to love (Pop, R&B, HIP/HOP, & Rock folks). They called it "Super Freak" for the new millennium!!!! :D

It's being played on the Adult Alternative Rock station here in LA -Star & on the heavy grunge/metal station KROQ as well as the pop and hip/hop stations.

Have we turned a corner here? Will the BORING hip hop of today evolve out of the Gangsta Bling Bling shit into some melodic, fun danceable "MUSIC"?????!!!!! Who knows....BUT they gotta do something. Every critic is decrying the current state of music and saying the record companies are to blame for not developing real artists and just pushing the flavor of the week throughout the nineties. That today's music has no "staying power" is something I've been feeling for years now. Once this shit is played out over a period of a few weeks, it's disposable, like a snotty kleenex. There's no need for a BOX SET or even a "Greatest Hits" single CD of any of this stuff. It's just over. It's on one of those "Now That's What I Call Music!" compilations...and forgotten.

NEXT!!!!!!

Thanks a lot Marky for all of your information and answers to my ?s. I have heard some much talk about "Hey Ya" but honestly I haven't checked it out but it's good to see music is evolving. And you said a lot of true things about music nowadays. Like the song says, I guess...Only time will tell....
