Well I spent the earlier part of the evening making a tape of my faves--oldies we've discussed here during the past year and newer stuff I can't get outta my head. Then I broke open a bottle of Veuve Cliquot (or was it the Korbel???    ) and played the damn tape over and over and over!!!!! At least, until HRH Donna Summer appeared on Dick Clark's NY Eve Special just after midnight. She sang an extended version of "Last Dance" and the KIDZ seemed to N-Joy her!!! Quelle surprise!!!
OK, here's my New Year's Eve creation:
1) "WHATEVER LOLA WANTS" - Sarah Vaughan (Verve Remixed 2)
2) "I'VE SEEN THAT FACE BEFORE (LIBERTANGO)"- Grace Jones (I don't think I have to explain why, do I?)
3) "WISH I DIDN'T MISS YOU SO"- Angie Stone (yeah, it's several years old now...but I still loves it).
4) "ARE YOU READY FOR LOVE"- Elton John & The Spinners (MY NEW FAVE!!!!!!)
5) "THEME FROM SHAFT" - Isaac Hayes (I wonder why???? Some people seem to think this was the start of disco!!! Can you imagine why? Well, uh, YEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!)
6) "MAKE ME BELIEVE IN YOU" - Patti Jo (my most-played song...needed to get this on another tape....the old one is wearing out!!!)
7) "LOVE'S UNKIND" - Donna Summer (Someone here (he knows who he is) asked a question elsewhere about this a while back...and the LP and the CD version are still next to the stereo & CD player!!!)
8. "BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN" - The Supremes (MY FAVE SUPREMES song...and since Donna follows "Love's Unkind" with her Supremes pastiche "Back in Love Again"...I thought I'd use the REAL THING!!!!)
9) "STONED LOVE"- The post-Ross Supremes. Listened to this recently and was amazed at what a great dance beat it has. Essential.
10) "LOVE HANGOVER" - Miss Ross in the Disconet 10+ minute version found on that second CD of the "Diana" Deluxe Edition. LOVE those new backup vocals: "I don't want, want ,want no cure, cure, cure for this love hangover"!!!!!
11) "YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON" - The Supremes (Had room for a short song....and The Supremes Anthology was just sitting there. Some have mentioned this record as being an early disco contender. I recall this playing on my transistor radio while my classmates & I were making Christmas wreaths at the bus garage in the cold November Wisconsin weather to raise money for our class!!!)
Side 2:
1) "LOVING YOU, LOSING YOU" - Phyllis Hyman (stunning Thom Bell composed instrumental buildup to a great vocal by the late, great Miss H.)
2) 'MAMA CAN'T BUY YOU LOVE" - Elton John w/ The Spinners (didn't intend to use this...but the Thom Bell magic was in the air...so, why not?)
3) "I FOUND LOVE" - Deniece Williams (I FINALLY FOUND the 12" extended mix of this Ray Parker Jr. written & produced gem on a CD compilation of hers called "Love Songs"....what a bouncy treat!!!!
4) "CRAZY IN LOVE" - Beyonce (Hey it's that horn riff!!!!...used better here than in the original Chi-Lites record, if ya ask me)
5) "ROCK YOUR BODY"- Justin Timberlake (It does recall the early Michael Jackson before he went all whack, eh?) Interesting that both the Beyonce and Timberlake records were on the first list in this thread, also!!!!! Hey, Voyage!!!! :D
6) "IN THIS WORLD" - Moby (From his "18" CD---I love the souful gospelly vocal!!!)
7) "HELLA GOOD" - No Doubt (MY FAVE SONG OF THIS CENTURY!!!!! What a beat!!! what killer hooks!!! what a perfect record!!!!
8. "IT'S MY LIFE" - No Doubt ( A very nice cover of an all-time fave. They have such good taste to cover this and not something by, say Duran Duran.) :P
9) 'IT'S MY LIFE" - Talk Talk (THE ORIGINAL 12" EXTENDED MIX by STEVE THOMPSON!!!)
10) "MUSIC'S NO GOOD WITHOUT YOU" - Cher (Now this is where I usually lose everyone    ...BUT I LOVE THIS CUT!!!! The male vocals on the chorus work me ...driving over here, I figured out who they reminded me of...now I've forgotten who the hell it was!!! Just call me Dorrie !!! Yeah, I watched "Finding Nemo" last night.
11) "HEY YA!" - Outkast (I HAD TO BUY THIS RECORD!!!!) Went to Amoeba on NY's EVE to purchase a single to make sure I could include this on my BEST OF tape. And I played it TWICE...it almost fits.
HEY YA!!!!! Happy New Year to one & all!!!!! :D
