Default What Is The Rarest Bargain You've Found?

I have seen posts with the most you've spent on a record, how about the rarest bargain you've scored. I will start:

A friend of mine gave me a copy if I would record it to CD!

I bought many LPs for less than 1 Argentine peso (US$ 0.30) each, but can't remember which ones (most of them were local editions). However, I got a sealed US copy of Roberta Kelly's "Troublemaker" for 2 pesos. Not my favorite album but... 8)

Outside the disco realm, I remember exchanging "mano a mano" (that is with no money involved) a Los Guarros CD (bad local rock band) for... Peter Hammill's "The noise" CD, then his last. :o That girl at the fair surely didn't have a clue! :P

Back in the mid 80's, after looking for sometime in New York, I went to one of those 'open market' fairs in New Jersey where people are selling anything and everything. I found a sealed copy of Lamont Dozier's Out Here On My Own album. The reason I was so happy: "Take Off Your Makeup" resides on this lp :) . The reason I was even more happy: The guy wanted a whopping $2.00. :D :D

Default cheap salsoul

I paid 5$ for Salsoul Orch. Nice 'n nasty US test pressing 12", which I got from Gemm with other records. Even with the mailing it was 9 $ total, which I concider quite a reasonable price.

I found a mint condition copy of Cissy Houston's very first solo single from 1966 called 'Bring Him Back' on the Congress label. This one usually goes for about $50 and I snagged it for 50 cents at my local thrift shop! :D :D :D :D :D

I also won a copy, in an auction of Gloria Gaynor's 1965, very first single called 'He'll Be Sorry' on the Jocida label for only $3.01! These are just a few of my finds!

Not Disco 12", but great bargains! I found in Amsterdam in 1993 a copy of Ronald Mesquitas Brazilian LP recorded for the French Barclay label in 1972, mint condition for $3.50. This was the biggest Brazilian record on the jazz dance scene then, selling for $500 (still sells for between $300-350). I found a year later for $2.00 a mint copy of Ben & Platano's "Paris Soul" album, also on Barclay (they did do some good stuff back in the 70's). This was at the time an unknown record, but a year later was selling for $700 (due to the demand for it by jazz, soul/funk dj's). I sold it for $750 to a DJ in Switzerland at this time.
I also managed to find in the last few years three copies of the really rare Brazilian record by Arthur Verocai (recently reissued by Ubiquity in San Francisco) for $15.00 each. This record (if you can find anyone who has an original to sell) is selling for $600-700 at the moment, only seen on e-bay once in vg+ condition, sold for $450.

For 3 or 4 years in the mid-'80s, there used to be an un-marked hi-nrg specialist in the basement of a womens' clothes shop in London's Chinatown. The ladies' fashion aspect made sure the shop was a closely guarded secret among my peer group - though when I met up with Leatherman, I found out that he used to shop there also - and that he'd bought some of the records I'd seen and left - and many I'd missed!

The best thing was that all the hi-nrg was in the racks and fully priced, while all the straightahead disco 12"s were piled up in boxes under the racks; and were all £1.00 each. They used to buy some good collections, mosly US product and mainly promos. It was a bit of a 'disco dream', while it lasted.

During one particularly dry period when the stock hadn't rotated, I went through all the boxed and floored stuff and couldn't find a single new title. I was keen to buy something, so I trawled the hi-nrg racks looking for any 'mistakes' - and found none. I was about to leave and I decided to check (very reluctantly) the last 3 racks, just behind the counter - and the very last record in the very last rack was 'Good Love' by Rome Jefferies. I panicked because I thought they knew of its value, but the late Andy Sojka, who worked there occasionally, said '..a pound'. I didn't sleep for days!

I don't watch eBay, but I haven't heard of this turning up on there yet. It has been one of the most sought-after (and genuinely scarce) 12"s in the UK since at least 1984 and I'm sure it would start a mini war on the 'net. :)
