Outrageous prices paid for 12"!

I was doing my daily perusal of Ebay today and came across yet more auctions of 12" tracks that are garnering big bucks.

Here's one: "LEON WARE AND JANIS SIEGEL (MANHATTAN TRANSFER) WITH "WHY I CAME TO CALIFORNIA" ON A WHITE LABEL PROMO ELEKTRA AT 4:11 WITH THE FLIP CAN I TOUCH YOU THERE AT 4:05 STONE MINT UNPLAYED "

Currently bidding is at $330!

Or another:"ORIGINAL COPY OF VANCE AND SUZZANNE....I CAN'T GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU...6.38 B/W APPLE SAUCE....I CAN'T GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU (INSTRUMENTAL)...7.00"

Current bid at $150!

Have any of you paid outrageous prices like these for a 12"?

let me see, the most i ever payed for a record was about 40 bucks a couple of times. once for t s monk" bon bon vie" i payed 30 bucks and another time for vaughn mason and crew "jammin big guitar" was 40 dollars i think thats as far as ill go. i wont spend alot of money on a record just because its a collectable, ill spend money on it if its the only way to get a song that you cant get any other way.

I paid $45 CAD for Ja-Kki's "Sun... Sun... Sun..." 12". It was worth it, but there aren't a lot of other records that I'd shell out that much for.

I paid around $100 for the Disconet vinyl remix of "Lay All Your Love On Me" by ABBA back in the late 80's.

Ebay is a great tool to be educated about what is rare and in demand, and also a good place to buy records, but with attention.

Unfortunately the Ebay disco section has changed much in the last 3 years. First, the canadians began to bull, by bidding on each other's auctions and raising prices; then came the french and the italians, who, excited for the bunch of promo 12"s that never got to Europe, began to offer insane money for quite common records; then came the japanese resellers, that, after raiding the US and taking home what was left over after the english raided the US in the 80s, noticed that they could buy records on line (paying absolutely crazy prices, but anyway lower than those they reselled the records at in Japan): at last, arrived the japanese collectors, and the game went to an end for all the others!!!

By the way, the records you mention are really "rare" (I have to admit it's the first time I see the promo 12" of Leon Ware's "Why I came to California"), but, as often stated in many threads by many friends here, rare does not necessarily mean beautiful

What is strange is the way tracks like "Why i came..." , Hubert Laws "Family" or Denice Lasalle "I'm so hot" which are from LP's which are relatively easy to get are so valuable on 12"'s. In most cases the mix is the same and it is no different to the LP version, just a louder cut. IMO it is purely a rarity promo only thing, nothing to do with the music.

The ultimate example of that has to be that Mexican 12" of "Woman" by Barrabas. The last one went for, what, $2000 USD?

I missed this auction (i save them for future reference) , the highest I had seen was $1200.00, I was lucky once when I won an orignal sealed LP for 25.00.

Just saved the scan for that Leon Ware record and I’ll look for it one of this days as I’m sure it is here somewhere (warehouse) even though I don’t remember this cut at all, for me it is amazing to see such interest in records that at the time I discarded to the ‘Maybe’ piles ( re-discovered many after scouting Ebay i.e. Womack’s’ “Baby I’m scared of you”) or were considered mediocre at best (locally) and failed the “Dance floor” test back then even after repeated promotion attempts, Ebay has shown to me the great diversity of tastes between US regions and around the world, (one reason why it was difficult to DeeJay in different regions successfully unlike today!) although some times I wonder if people just buy and pay this prices for some of this music because it was never popular (or any good) in the first place and there fore is rare to find it now on vinyl.

Earlier in the year, I paid $63 for Brass Construction 12"
Movin'/Changin' at 45 RPM... I was satisfied.. however, as long as I say away from Ebay I should be fine... :lol:

The most expensive 12" Ive bought are

- Tana Gardners double pack LP. I paid 35 $ plus shipping from US (=some 6 $with other vinyl).

- and West End 17th anniversary medley 35 $ plus shipping

But on the other hand, both are in impeccable mint condition, the cover and vinyl, and have hardly been playd. Somehow I just couldn't leave these in Gemm shops 8)

Like many others, I'm not likely to pay over 40 $ for very many records. Whilst living in Finland and only travelling occasionally, I've found http://discomusic.gemm.com a good place to get stuff that I want.

The common price for a decent copy of Salsoul/T.K./West End/Prelude/etc 12" seem to be 10-15 $. Sometimes you see something at 8 $ or even 6 $. What do you think of this? Too high or just reasonable? :o[/url]
