You might sense a Scandinavian bias (what? where?) with the Kings and Sondre and Alcazar, but I notice that I often have an overlap or two with Markydefad (he has such good taste!). I played the PSB song for some friends and was a bit embarrassed to find myself getting all choked up. Neil Tennant sound so detached and yet...

Why thanks for the compliment, Svend!!!!! :D

Must be bcause I'm of Scandinavian descent also!!! Mostly Norwegian with some Swedish, Scotch, Irish & French in the mix.

So nice to see that someone else has heard the Sarah Vaughan track I've been creaming over!!! And that more people (Voyage) are grooving to Talk Talk's "It's My Life"!!! Hope you have the Steve Thompson 12" remix!!!! :D

And Svend, I recently bought Al Green's "Can't Stop Now" CD. Haven't had time to listen...but I 'm sure I'm gonna love it.

Haven't heard the Pet Shop Boys tune yet...it is new, right? They are big faves of mine also. And I buy all Beck's stuff too.

Nice to meet you. Thanks for sharing. 8)

Hey Marky! :D

I vaguely remember you once said something about Talk Talk and No Doubt. I also got the cover version by No Doubt and liked both. The No Doubt version is good for my generation lol

I didn't get the remix version u said, I got the 12" which is like 6 min long.

BTW I recommend the Love Actually Soundtrack and movie. They rule lol

Voyage :P

Curiouser and curiouser! I have exactly the same ancestral make-up (minus the Swedish influence much to my Norwegian cousins' relief).

The Steve Thompson remix of "It's My Life"--is that the one on the Natural History CD? I like that one but prefer the extended album version. Oh those gorgeous, chiming chords.

That is so cool that you would mention "More Than This." If I were allowed only one song on a desert island, that would be the one. I'm not generally much of a celebrity worshipper, but I'll make an exception for Bryan Ferry. I saw him perform during his As Time Goes By tour. He is swoonsome. I hear he's single now!

The PSB's "Miracles" is one of two new songs on the Pop/Art compilation (the other is "Flamboyant"). Supposedly the discs are all spiffed up and remastered but I haven't had time to listen to them on my home stereo, just my discman, so I can't say whether they're improved.

I think you'll like the Al Green--it's as if no time had passed at all--same great signature sound but cleaner recording and chunkier beats.

Hey long-lost brother Svend!!!!! :D

I keep mentioning the Steve Thompson remix of "It's My Life"--it was just the regular extended 12" version of the song...with the FABULOUS instrumental breakdown at the end...down to just the beat...then adding the killer bassline...then the synths, etc. It's about 6:16 or so in length.

"More Than This" is from my fave LP of all time..."Avalon" by Roxy Music....does it get any cooler or elegant than this???

I used to hock this LP on EVERYONE when I worked retail in SF at Aloha Records. Bill Murray karaokes "More Than This" in this movie I saw yesterday "Lost In Translation".

I have to look for the new Pet Shop Boys.

My recommendation of the moment is :

The Complete Thom Bell Sessions By Elton John with The Spinners. I've had this for a while now....but only now am I playing it NON-STOP!!! Elton even appeared on the World Idol awards last night doing the surprise hit, in the UK anyway, "Are You Ready For Love". Sounded great!!! BUT, ya gotta hear the extended version with the late, great lead singer of the Spinners, Phillippe Wynne adding his incedible voice to the track. Elton abandoned this project in 1977...released 3 tracks in 1979....and now the CD adds 3 more tracks--ALL EXCELLENT!!!!

AMG says:

After dismissing his recently reformed backing band and breaking off professional ties with long-time lyricist Bernie Taupin, Elton John sought Philly Soul maestro Thom Bell in search of a fresh direction. However, John's brief foray into soul isn't as surprising or unusual as it might initially sound. In fact, two of John's biggest hits — “Bennie & The Jets" as well the breezy four-on-the floor backbeat on “Philadelphia Freedom" — also became crossover R&B smashes. Initially, John was not entirely pleased with the results and sat on the tapes for over a year before remixing the six completed songs in early 1979 for a summertime release. Ultimately, John chose half of the material that he and Bell had cut to be included on a three-song E.P. which was led by the mid-tempo and ultimately danceable “Mama Can't Buy You Love". The two other sides — “Are You Ready For Love" and Three Way Love Affair" — which were issued on that June '79 extended play single were likewise Bell creations and were augmented significantly by some Philly's finest. Among them were Casey James (guitar), Leroy M. Bell (guitar), Charles Collins (drums), strings and horns courtesy of none other than M.F.S.B. as well as backing vocals from the one and only Spinners. When the CD version of that EP was issued on compact disc, the other trio of previously unissued tunes that were documented during those sessions were released. Notable among them are a Taupin/John leftover titled “Nice And Slow" — which Thom Bell also rearranged — as well as a John ballad co-written with Gary Osborne titled “Shine On Through". This track would resurface as the lead-off track on John's A Single Man in a much more stark and moody musical setting. — Lindsay Planer

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! :D

Among others that I'm listening to this week;

Banbarra - Shack Up (possibly the funkiest record ever made - Hell this kicks some ass. I shall never tire of hearing it or talking about it.)
Gary Byrd + the GB Experience - The Crown (who says there weren't any great Rap records. Somewhat based loosely around Chic's Good times guitar and bass riffs, this record moves and grooves from the very first beat with its uplifting message.)
Gene Chandler - Get Down (Rick Giantos mix) (this was the very type of dicso record that British discos lapped up. Loved the shocking pink vinyl as well as the funky sounds and the first mini break @ 1'20 into the record. You could really tease people with this if you really wanted to.)
Willie Bobo - Always There (In my book the definitive disco version of the Ronnie Laws toon. This has great Jazzy solos and fantastic latin rhythms)
Trussel - Love Injection (A real classic slice of disco funk. Unfortunately it came out just as Disco died at the end of '79. Was it as big a tune in the U.S. as it was in dear old Blighty? A massive tune for me)
Gwen McRae - Keep The Fire Burning (what a fantastically fluid piece of uptempo disco funk? This used to go down an absolute storm)
Jumpp - Bouncy, Bouncy ( I used to love this piece of poppy 12" disco funk. I've just looked on Google and there's only 3 mentions for it.....What? I just don't understand how this has become so incredibly rare and never mentioned, 'cos as far as I remember it did reasonably well in the UK discos. Maybe I'm having a senior moment)
Teena Marie - Behind The Groove ( This was an absolutely massive toon back in 1980, in London. Yes, I was working there at the time. Love the bassline and Teena's impassioned singing.)
Jermaine Jackson - Let's Get Serious (Motown had some great disco cuts in 1980 eh? Another one that used to get absolutely everyone up on the floor really enjoying themselves. What a groove!)
Charles Earland - Let The Music Play (I can almost hear strains of K-Jee in this slamming piece of Jazz Funk. A giant record on the UK disco scene in '78 with its 4/4 on the beat bass, flying hi hat, almost tribal feel and really jazzy solos {especially the Fender Rhodes}. Wow, what a scorcher!!!)

Hey Quinny--

Your list sounds great! I have always loved the Gene Chandler (I remember it was huge in Seattle though only Top 20 nationally) and the Gwen McCrae is excellent. I love the smoky, sandy quality of her voice. Linda Clifford is a queen but I would love to hear Gwen's version of Runaway Love. She would tell it. The Trussel track is one I've only recently heard but love it too, especially all the key changes toward the end (think the track made it to #12 or so in the US). You've piqued my interest with your descriptions of the Banbarra and the Charles Earland--will have to try finding them!

Svend: I don't think you'll be disappointed. The Banbarra track should be relatively easy to find on CD and vinyl (I have 7", crappy 12" from '84 and on 3 CD comps). The Charles Earland track might be a little more difficult. Look out for the CD "Mastercuts - The Best of Jazz Funk" .
TRACK LISTING Roy Ayers - Running Away
Ronnie Laws - Always There
Donald Byrd - Dominoes
Ned Doheny - To Prove My Love
Blackbyrds - Rock Creek Park
Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle
Idris Muhammad - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This
Spyro Gyra - Shaker Song
Tom Browne - Brighter Tomorrow
Herbie Hancock - I Thought It Was You
Grover Washington Jr. - Sausalito
Paulinho Da Costa - Deja Vu
Lonnie Liston Smith - Expansions
Azymuth - Jazz Carnival
George Duke - Brazilian Love Affair
Roy Ayers - Love Will Bring Us Back Together
Kool & The Gang - Summer Madness
Atmosfear - Dancing In Outer Space
Tania Maria - Come With Me
Johnny Hammond - Los Conquistadores Chocolates
Dizzy Gillespie - Unicorn
Benny Golson - New Killer Joe
Charles Earland - Let The Music Play
Ramsey Lewis - Spring High

If I knew for sure that Wilbert Longmire was the long version, I'd order it straight away (got some doubts though 'cos it wasn't on the Mastercuts Jazz Funk CD I do have).

Thanks for the info on Trussel, Gwen McRae and Gene Chandler. Sounds like Seattle was quite a funky place, back in the day.
