Default A new record store opened in Wollongong

Hi all. Recently a new record store opened in Wollongong called "The Record King" which is a record and book shop which sells records of all genres including disco/funk/soul. Anyhow they have two sections which relates to disco and funk, one being a DJ's section and the other being a soul/funk section. There's no where near as much that would be found in a typical American dance record store but probably about 50 to 75 records of that genre from the 70s to today. Anyhow there were a number of great gems there such as Dark Tan, Con Funk Shun, BT Express, Whispers, Isaac Hayes, The Miracles, Candi Staton etc however rather expensive as they ranged from $5 to $30 and I'm pretty much always on a budget. But I managed to buy 3 records which cost me $23 all up:

BT Express - Energy To Burn 1976 LP $10
George McCrae - Diamond Touch 1976 LP $8
Ritchie Family - Brazil 1975 LP $5

I've previewed them and they are D-Y-N-O-M-I-T-E :D !!! BT Express "Energy To Burn" LP which I'm currently listening to right now is a fantastic contemporary funk album with an absolute TOP track called "Depend On Yourself". Ritchie Family's "Brazil" is an absolute top disco album, I'm impressed with both side A and side B, whoever said a while back on the board that side B was crap well I certainly don't think so :D ! And George McCrae's "Diamond Touch" is also a top album, whilst I got this album 3 years back it had no cover and the record was jam-packed full of dirt and scratched like bloody ratshit, so I bought this album again in excellent condition from the store and it's in its cover :D !!! My favourite 3 tracks off it are "Nothing But Love", "Love In Motion" and "Cut The Rug".

I'm glad that there's FINALLY a local record store that holds obscure disco/funk records which saves me having to go all the way up to Sydney. I'll be buying records from there from time to time as they are expensive. Thank god the disco/funk stuff ain't as expensive as the rock and metal stuff, $55 for a Metallica record, fair dinkum!!!!!

Anyhow I got my money's worth :D !

George McCrae's "Diamond Touch" really disappointed me because I was expecting so much more from Gregg Diamond producing. While it's not horrible by any stretch it just leaves one feeling empty. It's especially sad considering that Gregg Diamond was really creative during this period. It's no comparison to his other efforts like Bionic Boogie or his Star Cruiser Band.

Finally another Aussie!! G'day Funky Dude, my name is Lloyd, I'm 19 from Queensland! I am starting out as a dj, and obviously am obsessed with disco. Do they sell disco cds there too? I am DESPERATE for Slick "Space Bass", Edwin Starr "Happy Radio", El Coco "Lets Get It Together" and Gene Chandler "When You're No 1". (12"!!!!) Any ideas? Whats your fav disco song at the mo and tell me some stuff about yourself. I'm into "Tenderness" by Diana Ross at the current mo. AUSSIE!!

Hi Lloyd. Welcome to the board. Glad to see another Aussie join the group. I've been joined to discomusic.com for 3 years now and in that time only seen a few Aussies in the group.

I'm Troy aged 22 and I'm no DJ but collect disco and funk of all sorts for my own interest especially the underground stuff of the early/mid 70s as funk and disco was pretty much fused together in that period. I've got well over 200 disco/funk/soul related LPs.

I unfortunately don't have Slick's "Space Bass" but do have Edwin Starr "Happy Radio", El Coco "Lets Get It Together" and Gene Chandler "When You're No 1" on MP3, not on 12" 45s. I also got Gene Chandler's "When You're No. 1" album on cassette however the cassette is old and the sound quality from memory ain't the best.

Anyhow I have so many favourite disco songs, but one of my alltime favourites is "Movin'" by the Brass Construction which dates 1975. I've got the whole album too and it's fantastic.

I'm also a fan of rock music as well as disco especially the 70s Aussie stuff like AC/DC, Skyhooks, Hush, Sherbet etc... and am a diehard 1970s Countdown fan and am looking around for 70s home videos with lost episodes as ABC wiped most of the master copies of the 70s episodes as you'll see on my site http://balder.prohosting.com/funkydud/ . I also collect early video recorders and tapes.

Anyhow hope you have fun on discomusic.com, it's the best disco site in the world :D !

Have a good one :D !
Cheers

Hi Aussies...I'm sure you know all about Renee Geyer, top Aussie soul singer, a friend recommended me a version by her of "I'll be there in the morning" the Norman Conners/Jean Carn tune but I've never even seen a record by her...any more info? Did she do any Aussie disco tunes?

I also was disappointed with that George Mcrae LP produced by Gregg Diamond; I listened to it in the shop & handed it back; I bought an Eddie Henderson LP instead which was brilliant! :P

I've heard a few of Renee's songs and have some of her TV show performances on a few of my music videos and her style is more around the soul/funk genre. Her main disco tune she has done would be "Say I Love You" in 1981 and another tune that comes close which is more soul/funk oriented would be "Sweet Love" back in 1975. I think Renee actually was born in Hungary.
