Talking Re: Lurkers To This Forum, Please Introduce Yourself

Hi, Bernie and everyone else!

Totally new here to this forum.

I've been listening and appreciating great Disco as well as the "underground" style since 1979. I had the privilege and blessing to experience music on this level when I went to my first club in downtown Seattle called The Monastery.

And for those who do not know, the principle DJ at that time (i.e., at The Monastery) was Dana Andrews. (And his passing took place in 1989; I will forever miss the phenomenal talent he exhibited.) Dana had a profound following of listeners within the Pacific Northwest of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

This unique discothèque featured one of the best sound systems to embrace the west coast night club scene (at the time, amazing acoustics coupled with state of the art Phase Linear amplifiers had an utterly awesome impact on the senses, to say the least).

This was the initial experience that raised my appreciation for great music to the next level, so to speak.

Peace!

Hi rXmX,

Thanks for joining and giving us a little sense of the Seattle Disco scene. I interviewed the late DJ Jerry Miller from Portland, OR who pretty much dispelled any notion that Disco didn't exist in the Pacific NW. Check it out and see if it jives with your experience...

Very interesting. Thanks, Bernie, for referencing that article.

I have to admit, I knew very little about DJ Jerry. One thing is for sure, anyone who claimed disco did not exist in the Pacific NW, never attended the experience of DJ Dana Andrews at the Monastery in Seattle, esp. during the frame of 1980-1982.

I have been collecting dance singles since 1980, and started my own mixing in 1984. I also worked at a few clubs during the 1980s. And continued to attend club dance events well into the 90's and this decade. I have heard DJ's from Seattle as well as Vancouver, BC. And with that said, The Monastery during its peak was the closest thing to the San Francisco's "Troc," if I can go out on a limb here. Disco, if you knew where to go (i.e., The Monastery, and some other spots), was fairly well represented in the Northwest.

Not to sound oversimplified, but Portland's style seemed very different from what was played in Seattle during that era. It is easy for me to say as a native of Seattle, that Seattle very much had the edge over Portland, hands down (not that this is an important point or anything). Portland definitely had disco. And so did Seattle!

hello, my name is Thomas Cox. i just discovered this forum today, and i'll be around checking it out and posting as well. im a younger cat, only 26 and thus missed all this stuff the first time around. i'm from pittsburgh, pa, and i'm only now learning about what went on here disco-wise as this is a very blue collar rock oriented music city.

i got into this stuff from modern dance producers who reference the past in both their productions and deejay sets, people like Theo Parrish and Metro Area. i've been collecting disco hardcore for a little less than two years (though i picked up some stuff here and there before then...) and i think my collection is pretty good considering that.

my favorite era is the early 80's spaced out electro-boogie kinda thing (Eric Mattew productions, Larry Levan remixes, etc) though i also really dig the soulful 70's vibes as well. i'm not too into the italo sound, though there are some jams i do really love.

i have a couple mixes that are mainly disco up here:

Hello I'm StarrTerry and new to this forum.

I've been interested in Disco Music for over 30 years.

It all started out for me back in 1974 George McCrae - Rock Your Baby. The first record introduced as a DJ. I was Hospital Radio at the time and everybody gave it the thumbs down but lo and behold it went to No. 1 in UK.

I was absolutely chuffed.

Smile Toronto query

Good day:

This is my first posting. I have just purchased a rare 1950's lp from the U.S. and need to have it transferred to CD for a friend. (I don't feel like buying equipment right now.) Is there a reputable firm in Toronto, Canada who would do the job? I've looked at some ads but they tend to be for big firms doing commercial work.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Jaguaraud

Default Thanks for the Welcome

Hi there! :-P
Before anything, thanks for let me in, this is my first time in a forum, but i´ll try and i´ll do my best.
I´m from Villahermosa, Tabasco Mexico, i used to be a club dj late 70s early 90s, and i really enjoy the music.
sad thing is i used to buy the vynils for the clubs i worked, but i dont know why i didnt buy ones to my own collection, so now, when i have some money i get them from amazon.com or i taped with a friend who has a large collection of vynils, cause he owns a bar.
thanks again and have a great day!:-)
