Hi All
Ive been visiting this site on and off for almost a year and I will continue to do so , more frequently .
I grew up during the boom in the mid 70's in Sydney Australia and grew a huge Afro to rival the best of them , thus my nickname given to me at highschool by the older boys .
By late 79 early 80 I was old enough to disco !! ...yipee .. good times ,, great music BUT my fro had to go .
I look forward to many years of reminiscing/discusing and learning with all of you here at the forum .
cheers to all.. :D

HI all, hate to wake up a 6 month old thread, just found this place. This morning in fact. Through google.

Name is Marc, 49yold. Originally from Montreal, Qc. Now living 20km south of it.

Started DJ'ing in 1973 at l'Index on St-Denis street. Biggest PLace I worked at was at the Disco-Lazer in the suburbs in 1977-79. 3 dance floors, 1500 persons. During THE "disco era".

Stopped for 20 years and in 2000, worked in a small pub, playing from disco to present stuff, all in all for 2 years. Ended up having to leave the city because I liked too much to powder my nose. Clean for 3 years now.

Life is good, nice to see peeps who loves music as much as I do.

Thx.

I thought it high tme to introduce myself. I suppose I am one of the 'old school first time around' people! I began listening to 'Disco' music in 1975, at the tender age of 15. This interest led me to begin buying everything that moved -being in London there were a few shops that catered for the sound. I recall being shown a record shop called Daddy Kool just behind Oxford Street, and was one of the few white boys there! I started 'clubbing' at the age of 17. I went straight to the West End - starting at a place called 'Sundown', now called Hombe De Bahia and then into the 'classy' clubs - The Embassy and Legends and Maunkberry's. The Embassy in 1978/9 was arguably London's answer to Studio 54. There were always famous faces down there & I will never forget my 18th birthday, when I sat with Freddie Mercury, Pete Townsend (The Who), Lemmy (Motorhead), and several older women (in their 20's!) supping pints! However I did not go for the social scene, but the music! I was also fortunate to live not too far from a record shop that was used to compile the UK charts. Consequently it used to get all the latest releases on Limited Edition 12" and I bought eveything I had heard.

Tracks that 'blew me away' around that time included

You & I - Rick James
Running Away - Roy Ayres
Dancer - Gino Soccio
Love Injection - Trussel
Jingo - Candido

My interest never waned and in the mid 80's met a club DJ who had put all his money up his nose and sold me his record collection. I then did the 'family thing' and about five years ago bought (cheap) a couple of Gemini (Technic copies) decks, a reasonable mixer and a very good amp. I started to play my music at house parties - then I was asked to do a a gig at my local pub in North London. I enjoy 'mixing' records together which is quite challenging and working out what goes well together. I still often only 'play' to dozens of people rather than 100's, but play stuff I feel like listening to. I recently got asked to do a show on a London pirate station, that plays mainly house music and the feedback was amazing! They have asked me back! It's really something - well to me anyway - to 'introduce' classic dance music to a younger audience.

I think I first discovered this site about 1999 - Bernies Disco page, but it's good to see that I am not unique in still loving this music! Despite my vast collection, I am pleased to see that there are tracks that are new to me and going out and finding them.

I look forward to contributing further and keeping the music alive and fresh.

Well I started playing disco music about 1972 or '73 on a carnival ride known as the "Himalaya". The man who trained me to operate the new ride was from New Jersey, and ran a Himalaya at Seaside Heights New Jersey. His ride was located on a pier that extended into the Atlantic Ocean.

He brought a whole new "sound" with him when he brought his records to teach me how to deejay and operate the ride itself. You probably have guessed that sound was DISCO.

At first, it was an acquired taste, and my co-workers (who were forced to listen to me deejay for hours every work day) didn't like it. By the next season at the amusement park, they had acquired the disco bug.

After high school, instead of going to work for a nearby (about two hundred feet from my ride) radio station playing Top 40, I got a job spinning records in gay nightclubs. First of all, it paid better, and then there was the matter of free alcohol for the deejay.

This was the early days of disco. I remember playing the Fatback Band, Eddie Kendricks, the 3 Degrees, Shirley and Company, Sister Sledge, in other words early disco was a predominately black sound.

I stayed in the disco deejay business until 1983. Boy did those years go by fast. I guess one of my favorite tracks was "Hollywood Hot/Hotter" by the Bob Crewe Group. It described the gay scene in far away Hollywood, California.

Although I never made it out of Tulsa except for occasional gigs in Oklahoma City or Dallas, Texas, I sure could identify with the big city sound of Disco.

Default Hey,I new here

Thanks for this site, brings back the best memories.I found this site by way of google image search, looking for The Mutiny Night Club(Coconut Grove,MIA,FL.)

I was a member in the 80's and still have the original gold metal card with the "Playboy" logo on it, hell that place was unique!

My first experience with Disco music was at the 747 Night Club in Miami,Springs,FL.where they used to play a lot Dubbie Brothers songs before Disco! (I was getting tired af that same tunes)

Then I discover much better places like Brasseries and The Mutiny.During this time I was working in the airline industry.

I also visited Disco Clubs in Boston( Downstreet) ,New Orleans(don't remember the names),Charleston S.C.and Puerto Rico(Leonardo Da'Vinci Night Club in El Condado,San Juan),Hippopotamus,Rio de Janeiro,Brazil(1982).

One question: where can I find all those disco songs recommended by the 700 DJ's in one single CD,if possible?

Great site,
AL
Palm Beach,FL.
