Every Friday night I spin the happy hour at Former Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes Ringside Club in Easton, PA. featuring Soul and Club classics. Some of the songs I played this past Friday were:

'Music is the World' - Crown Heights Affair

'Radiation level' - Sun

'Winners' - Kleeer

'Let's me entertain you' - The Controllers

'Get to the feeling' - Pleasure

'Grazing in the grass' - Friends of Distinction

'We' - Brass Construction

'Walk away from love' - David Ruffin

along with slow jams:

'Thoughts of old flames' - Pleasure

(A personal favorite)

'Somebody's gotta win' - The Controllers

'Just when we start makin' it' - Tower of Power

'I had a choice' - Sun

Just to name a few. Curious to know your thoughts on some of these. Happy listening.

Easy,

Sam "ALL JAM"

The selections were sweet. I can listen to Friends of Distinction singing anything all day long.

BTW - What time is Happy Hour and exactly where is Mr. Holmes' hangout? I'm up in P-burg sometimes which is "just across the line" from Easton?

NickNack:

Larry Holmes Ringside is located at 91 Larry Holmes Drive in Easton which is right across the bridge from P'burg. Happy hour is from 6-9PM. If you're ever there while I'm there come up and say hello.

Paul:

You're right about 'Music is the world', that's the chorus "I'm diggin it, I'm diggin' it, diggin' it". That's probably why we're diggin' it so much. One of my all time favorites by The Crown Heights affair along with 'Dreaming a dream' and 'Use your body and soul'.

Thanks for the compliment; You defintely have great taste also if you're diggin' Pleasure. A fantastic band from the '70's and early '80's that doesn't get the proper notoriety that other bands from that era do. The five LP's I have are all great.

Nice one! Pity I'm so far away, though ..

Hearing mention of that David Ruffin track sends shivers down my spine .. Aah! Memories are made of tracks like this !!

What sort of crowd do you get there, and how do they react to your excellent playlist?

Jazz-Pilgrim:

Thanks for the comment; The crowd make-up is adult oriented, late 20's to early '50's. Unfortunately, it is during happy hour so it isn't as big a crowd as I would like. The former champ is 52 so he loves the classics. As for the David Ruffin track, I love that song. I am currently working on a new DJ mix featuring songs from that era and the mix will begin with this track. When it is complete Bernard Lopez will get a copy and hopefully it can be played in some fashion now that they've taken away the Dance Groove Radio show. Thanks again and look out for this week's happy hour playlist.

Easy,
