Hello. Cheryl Lynn is my all-time favorite singer. She never get's the credit or respect that she deserves. She's often dismissed as a one hit wonder because she never had another hit as big as 'Got To Be Real' but she had so much more to offer. Here are a few of Cheryl's classics, out of many that come to mind:

FEEL IT - HI-NRG/Disco tune that should have been a club smash. Very spirited vocal by Cheryl that will send chills down your spine!

KEEP IT HOT - Rauncy Disco/Funk jam from 1979 that sounds amazingly fresh and new when heard today.

SHAKE IT UP TONIGHT - Ray Parker Jr. produced stepper's classic from 1981.

SHOW YOU HOW - Another 1981 Ray Parker Jr. production with fantastic bass by Marcus Miller off of Cheryl's excellent IN THE NIGHT album. Could have been an R&B contender if released as a single!

IT'S GONNA BE RIGHT - 1985 uptempo jam with quirky scatting by Cheryl from the album of the same name. Has to be heard to be believed!

IF YOU WERE MINE - Smart, conservative (by 1987 standerds) uptempo jam that was a Top 15 R&B smash for Cheryl

The list goes on and on! When is this woman going to get the respect that she deserves? She is the greatest female R&B voice of the 70's and 80's in my opinion. The girl could SANG!

I though Cheryl was a good singer who unfortunately tackled a lot of average material.

Apart from better known tracks like 'Got To Be Real', 'Encore' and 'Georgy Porgy', I always went for 'In The Night', 'Say You'll Be Mine', 'I Just Wanna Be Your Fantasy' (two bad-assed Luther productions) and 'Fix It'.

No, I didn't forget about Cheyrl Lynn's ENCORE! How Could I?! I merely named a few tunes off the top of my head that I thought the disco crowd might enjoy. SAY YOU'LL BE MINE was another great tune off of her Instant Love album but the one that gets me is SLEEPWALKIN' from the same album. It's one part dreamy midtempo and one part nasty funk! Marcus Miller outdid himself as always on bass!

You are half right Forrce, some of Cheryl's material was average but she made it shine as if it was Gerswin!

Along with Got To Be Real, she had two more big hits (here in Brazil): the follow-up STAR LOVE (in 1978 I think) and ENCORE which was released around 1982.

She even came to Brazil to promote Star Love in the late 70's. I remember watching her on the Brazilian TV.

I can't remember precisely because it was such a long time ago, but I think she didn't play any venue, she just went to various TV programs to promote her music, as opposed to SANTA ESMERALDA who played in PAPAGAYO DISCO CLUB here in Rio de Janeiro... it was an over the top event... even with LIVE transmition of the show on the TV.

I don't think you'll get too many arguments that Cheryl Lynn is one class act. I'm glad you mentioned "If You Were Mine". I went crazy for that when it came out. Another one I love is "All My Lovin'". I freak when she does the chorus:

GIVING, ALL MY LOVING / (I'LL BE) GIVING...

She drops "I'LL BE" like she's competing with Melvin Douglas from the Temps. Love it. :D

ALL MY LOVIN' is another great tune. That note that she hits at the end! WOW! They can't sing like that anymore!

I too didn't care for NEW DRESS, E-Funk. Much too Electro/New Jack Swing for me! She deserved better!

There is one song by Cheryl that I can't seem to find anywhere called AT LAST YOU'RE MINE from a 1985 movie soundtrack called Heavenly Bodies. This one was written by Michael Bolton!!! It's very hard to come by but it was a Top 40 R&B hit in 1985. Does anyone have any info on this track? Is it any good?

Don't remember this song by her but you should link to GEMM from here. There are about ten 7" copies for sale under CHERYL LYNN and LYNN, CHERYL.

Thanks NickNack. Now that I think about it I do remember seeing several copies of the 7" single of Cheryl Lynn's 'At Last You're Mine' at GEMM, but I passed. You can't blame me for being a little hesitant seeing as it was written by Michael Bolton! LOL. I had hoped to get some feedback on how it sounded before I purchased it, but no such luck. I'll just have to finally break down and buy it! Haha.

I was looking for another record and came across my “Various Heavenly Bodies “ demo copy (As-1965- XSM 169856- Private Records) Cheryl’s “At last your mine “ (3:35) is included, writers credit are not listed, never used this cut back then so I just gave it a spin, I’d say is your average 80’s typical rock-ish sounding ballad with standard electric rock guitar solo in the middle of the song and all, Cheryl’s impressive vocal range it’s demonstrated here once again but unless you are a completist(sp) I wouldn't bother with this one. This whole Demo disk is typical 80’s pop stuff with electric drums rolls and electronic ‘whip’ sounds, the best cut probably is “The Beast in me” by Bonnie Pointer.( and very cheesy just like the movie) other included cuts are:
“Heaven” Bonnie Pointer
“Breaking out of prison” Sparks
“Keep on working- Dwight Twilley
“out of control” The Tubes

Thanks a million for the review of 'At Last You're Mine'. You are the first person that I have talked to that has even heard of the song, let alone owned a copy! A lot of people get it confused with her 1987 hit called 'If You Were Mine'. I'm not sure why it considered so obscure when it was a Top 40 R&B hit in 1985, here in the states. I am trying to get everything that Cheryl Lynn recorded but thanks to your advice, I will not rush out and get a copy of that song just yet. I was skeptical because Cheryl had another Pop Ballad single from around the same time called 'This Time' which is not very good. I also don't have that much faith in material written by Michael Bolton! (sorry if you're a Michael Bolton fan, lol :roll: )

I'm a huge Cheryl Lynn fan, so it's always a pleasure to hear from other fans of the diva. Thanks for posting. I have to admit I wasn't a fan from the very beginning but once the "In The Night" lp came out with the smash single "Shake It Up Tonight" I was hooked. The following year I got to see her in concert at the Newark Symphony Hall. She opened up for Luther, who was fairly new as a solo artist at the time, and she stole the show.

I once owned all of her albums including the soundtrack to "Heavenly Bodies" that feature her single "At Last Your Mine." I personally love this song and have even thougth about using it as my wedding song when I tie the knot one day. :lol: While it is true that Michael Bolton wrote it and it those sound a little like 80-ish soft pop, but leave it up to Cheryl's vocals to make this song worth owning. (IMHO)

I agree with you that Cheryl had a number of songs on her albums that should have been hits including: "Keep It Hot", "I've Got Just What You Need", "Say You'll Be Mine", "Love Rush", "New Dress", "If You Were Mine", "Every Time I Try To Say Goodbye", "Good For Me" and just about everything on her last album "Good Time" from 1995.

Here are some Cheryl Lynn fun facts. Did you know...

that Cheryl did a duet with the group Tower Of Power on their 1979 lp "Back On The Street"? The song was entitled "In Due Time."

that Janet Jackson sampled the music from Cheryl's song "Love Rush" for her single "Don't Stand Another Chance"?

that Cheryl was featured on another soundtrack "Armed And Dangerous" from 1986 (starring the late John Candy)? The song was entitled "Steppin' Into The Night" and it was produced by Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire.

that in addition to Toto and Luther Vandross Cheryl has done backing vocals for DJ Roger, Lenny Williams, John Mayall, Ray Parker, Jr., and Richard Marx?

that she has a x-mas song entitled "Wrap You Up" that was featured on a Avex Trax record label which featured a variety of x-mas dance songs from different artist? The cd can still be purchased at TowerRecords.com.

that she appeared on ABC's Disco Ball celebration this past January and performed her classic "Got To Be Real."
