For myself and the other DJs working in the NY/NJ area it was a big joke to repeat the TV commercial..."Mixed just like a Night at Studio 54!!!" Um... Uh... Yeah, right. The tracks sounded as if they were being forced together.

My 2 favourite mixed compilations of the day were:
"Disco Party" from TK Records, mixed by Tom Savarese
"Steppin' Out - Disco's Greatest Hits" from Polydor, mixed by Ritchie Rivera

Were you mixing records in the late 70's? From the Studio 54 record, I liked the mix where it went from YMCA to Disco Nights by GQ. I thought it was a clever mix. There were a few mixes I used to try to keep in my memory. I had a friend that used to mix at his house and he was interchanging from Madleine Kane's Forbidden Love, to Front Page's Love Insurance, to Mandolay by La Flavour without missing a beat. Unfortunately, so many of those talented D.J.s are no longer with us.

Stephen, do you know if that record shop is still open on Carmine St, in the West Village? I remember they used to have some of the most ignorant, nastiest people working there, but they carried a lot of oldies. I also remember Heartbeat near ....hmm, I think 6th Avenue. I got some nice oldies there too.

If it was Vinylmania, it's gone. Between high rents and declining demand, record stores in NYC are disappearing fast. Annoyingly enough, Rose's is still around, they just moved... and still charge 3 - 5 x the going rate for anything.

I played from '76 to '97.

Do you remember that Manny Lehman was the counter-guy at VinylMania? Every Thursday I'm buying records from the guy and a few years later he has his own label, through A&M Records! (that did the US releases of Eastbound Expressway's "Knock Me Senseless" and Michael Bow's "Love & Devotion".) Nowadays he's still doing Guest DJ gigs. He was here in South Florida last month.

I'd shop there and at that amazing record store on 34th Street. "Downstairs Records", I believe.

I went there just before it closed & found the staff very friendly & nice; I wish staff were that nice in UK record shops.
