I vaguely remembered hearing Donna Summer's "Macarthur Park" on the radio in 1978 when I had just turned 8, but I didn't have enough pocket money back then to go out and buy records! Somehow it got forgotten and time went by...

Then, in 1989, there was a TV advert for a Telstar compilation called "... and the beat goes on! 34 full length dancefloor classics from the 70s", and I realised that I liked all the music! So I bought it...

Over the next few years I bought compilations of chart disco, some Donna Summer cassettes, and listened religiously to radio programmes such as "Pick of the pops" or Simon Bates' "Golden Hour" whenever a year between 1974-1980 was featured! :P

Then, in 1993, just after having got my first job, moved to Slough and consequently within the range of Kiss 100 FM, I heard an advert on the radio for "Classic Salsoul Mastercuts Volume 1". I bought it, and from then on I've been hooked! :D

Default Korvettes, Sam Goody, etc........

The Korvettes record department was amazing when you consider that Korvettes was your average stodgy polyester-filled department store. They carried British rock imports, progressive rock that I heard on WNEW-FM, and disco from day one. I still have many vinyl albums that I bought there. When Korvettes was shutting down in 1980 I bought a bunch of albums at a huge discount.

Sam Goody had a larger selection of records as that was their main business. Below the record bins were tons more records, arranged by label and catalog number. Sam Goody is still in business, they are owned by Best Buy.

King Karol was a big record store on West 42nd Street & 6th Avenue. Prices were high but they carried a lot of unusual stuff. They also had the racks of records by catalog. The salespeople there were awful though. If you couldn't find a record in the racks a salesperson would grudgingly go in the back and get it for you then hand it you like it was sh*t. I once made the mistake of asking for a Todd Rundgren album. I got a lecture about how wealthy Rundgren had become and that's why this particular album was out of print.

I was only in Colony Records (Times Square) once or twice, prices were way too high.

I'm trying to remember other 1970s places. A big place on Kings Highway (still there?), a little place one flight up on a side street near Brooklyn College which is long gone.
