Default What Is Your Favorite Compilation?: Then and Now

What is your favorite compilation of disco (1974-1983) and then post disco around 1983-date?

I think a compilation is not good, unless it has LP or club versions of disco songs. I am under the impression that compilations today such as Last Days of Disco and Studio 54 have 45RPM singles versions. Yuch!

I have two great albums from the seventies with LP versions of songs. "A Night At Studio 54," and "Disco Boogie."

I also have a bunch of compilations from France and a few from Canada. It is good stuff. I do not have any modern compilations of disco. I have many K-Tel and Ronco but they are all short versions. I do not like that. Once in a while, I can still find old disco albums in thrift stores or flea markets.

What is your favorite compilation then and now. What songs make it the best?

Let me start by saying that I have The Last Days of Disco, 54, Saturday Night Fever and The Summer of Sam and I enjoy them veeeeeerrryy much! :D

Out of the 17 tracks from "TLDOD", I like 12 songs the best are "Gots To Have Loving" Let's All Chant", "I Love The Nightlife" "More,More,More" and "He's The Greatest Dancer".

"54" part 1 has 16 tracks - I like 10 of them. The best are "Contact", "Vertigo/Relight My Fire", "Que Sera Mi Vida" and "Keep On Dancin' "(suprisingly this has has a long version).

"SOS" has the least amount of songs 12 and I like 10. The best are "Let No Man Put Asunder", "La Vie en Rose", "There but For The Grace of God Go I" and "Dancing Queen".

Lastly is "SNF" with 17 songs and 12 of them are faves. The most favorite is "K-Gee" following with ""Open Sesame", "You should Be Dancin'" and "If I Can't Have You".

Out of all the movie compilations, I'll have to pick Saturday Night Fever and The Last Days of Disco. :D

P.S - The only thing I hate about these compilations are the edited 4 minute songs  .

Peppertree

I wanted to separate the soundtracks from the regular disco compilations which leaves me nine choices to pick a winner.

I'll have to go with "Give Your Body Up volume 2" why ?because it has all the extended club versions and hits like:
*Running Away
*Love Is The Message
*Touch & Go
*Now That We Found Love
*Bra
*Down To Love Town

My second choice is Salsoul Classics 2 - Double cd edition. Out of the 19 songs, I listen to 10 my best are:
*Spring Rain
*War Dance
*Law & Order
*Jingo
*Tangerine
*Double Crossed
*I Love NY

Default Long Version

For me if it is the short version, I feel cheated. (It is sort of like last year's all star game in baseball-there was no winner). I prefer the longest "club" version but I need to at least have the LP version.

No compilation is worth having unless it has the LP versions of the songs.

I think back in the day, my favourite compilation was Prelude's Greatest Hits Vol 1 and 2 (1983 music cassette). Some of the records they bought out were fantastic:

Secret Weapon - Must be The Music
Sharon Redd - Beat The Street

and my fave killer cut
Unlimited Touch - I Hear Music In The Street 8)

Ok - the Saturday Night Band was a short version, but I have the LP anyway! :P

I picked up a CD recently called Stop and Listen by a well-known underground London DJ - Dr Bob Jones. Famous for the "Soul Surgery".

The compelling track for me was a jazz-funk classic - Eddie Russ and "Zaius", but there was, to my delight, a meaty 9:42 disco remix of Linda Clifford's Runanway Love which I have never heard before. A brilliant track. And there is a great Curtis Mayfield disco-ish track, You're So Good To Me, which is excellent (1976). And on the jazz side a KNOCKOUT version of Inner City Blues by no less than Sarah Vaughan (1971). Wow! And lots of interesting Nineties modern beats...

Believe it or not, I think there are more compilation CD's with LP/club versions than the 7" radio versions we are most familiar with.

The Thank God It's Friday soundtrack is one of my favorites, as is Saturday Night Fever.

I think Salsoul has put out some wonderful compilations. Disco Boogie I have (excellent mixing), plus Salsoul Classics (Vol. 1-2, 3-4). Casablanca could have the potential to put out a wonderful set of compilation CD's, but have yet to do so. Today I bought Donna Summer's Bad Girls (Deluxe Edition) and enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to buying Miss Ross' Diana (Deluxe) soon as well.

Other compilation CD's that are great:

Disco Connection (1976-81)
Club Floor Classics
The Best Disco In The Universe, Vol. 3

I've always enjoyd the "Best Of 12" Gold" series. great full lenght versions of both 70s and 80s dance tracks.

for 80s compilations, Streetsounds were always the best in my book allthough I also like the Upfront series of the mid/late 80s. The emphasis were mostly on old school house but they also managed to put on some very good r&b tracks on them like "Together Forever" by Intrigue.
