Default 2 great funksters added to my record collection!!!

Hi everyone. Last Wednesday I went down to Kiama with my mother and her friends to get away from Unanderra for the day and down in Kiama there's these really old row of 19th century shop buildings housing shops selling various things from crystals, to souvenirs to antiques to collectables/memorabilia. Anyhow I went into the memorabilia store and to the right was boxes of records of various categories. Anyhow I looked in the R&B/Soul box and there were a bunch of great soul/funk records of various sorts lot of them being Motown compilations. Anyhow I was shit broke that day so I couldn't buy much, but going through the records I came across a few that I REALLY wanted to buy:
Con Funk Shun - Secrets LP 1977
Hues Corporation - Love Corporation LP 1976 (I think that was the album title)
Bar-Kays - Flying High On Your Love LP 1977
Brothers Johnson - Look Out For #1 LP 1976

I could only buy two of them so I bought the Bar-Kays one for $7 and the Brothers Johnson one for $6. Mate, I was stoked to come across these in a costal town like Kiama as you mainly find funky stuff like this in groove record stores in metro cities like Sydney and Melbourne. The covers maybe a little worn but the records themselves are in top condition. One thing that surprised me about the Brother's Johnson record is that the track "Get The Funk Outta Ma Face" only goes for 2 1/2 minutes when I have the 6 minute version on 45. Anyhow I'm glad to have these added to my collection, I've listened to the Bar-Kays one so far and yet to listen to the Brothers Johnson one. As for the other records I'm gonna take another trip down to Kiama to buy them when I get these bloody bills outta the way. They won't go in a hurry anyway because a lot of the Kiama residents are probably into pop, rock'n'roll and country music hehehehe  .

Also another great pickup (I actually won this on UK EBAY) is a great British disco/funk record:
JALN Band - Movin' City High LP 1978
It's a fantastic record and has the song I was after for ages "Get Up (& Let Yourself Go)" which has a really cool disco bass sound in it. I first heard this song when watching a 1978 Top Of The Pops episode which had them performing this song, the clip was really cool, it had 3 guitartists in the clip along with the bassman, one of the guys was wearing an indian outfit too. JALN Band remind me of the Olympic Runners. GREAT group :D !

Cheers

what a shocker on the Brothers Johnson cut huh... Actually both versions are cool. LP version of I'll Be Good To You is one of my all top favorite hits... That LP contains Free & Single ... and the instrumental song Land Of Ladies which I liked. Their follow up LP I couldn't wait to get it.... when I first heard Strawberry Letter 23, I ran out to the store to purchase it. IMO that LP is slightly better.... hopefully you'll come across it. :D

I have that LP too :D . And my top favourites from it are "Brother Man", "Right On Time" and "Strawberry Letter 23".

Hey guess what I got today down at Dapto markets??? :D

Two Brothers Johnson album promo board posters!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D One is a huge board poster promoting their "Blam" album dating 1978 and the other is a smaller one promoting their "Light Up The Night" album dating 1980. The artwork on these are FANTASTIC :D !!!They're aren't in the best of condition though as they have rips and nicks in them but glad to have got them! They only cost me $2 each. Would you believe I don't have those two LPs hehehehe    .

If I come across stuff like that... I'd purchase them also.. Last year on e-bay... they had a poster laminated of Rufus/Chaka Khan... promoting their new hit single stay ... they had gotten that from Billboard Magazine... I was pretty happy about it.

Hopefully I'll find posters of Ohio Players --- LP covers for any of their first 5 mercury releases... and of course Rufus/Chaka Khan Ask Rufus LP... I just want to kick myself in the ass because that LP contained a huge poster of the LP... and I somehow thru it away years later.. and never thought I would appreciate it again. Searching here I go.. :)

how about "Revolution #9" by the Beatles? 9 minutes of nothing but druggy sound effects and filler no matter how you look at it. And there's a weird record that NONE of us has heard: a track on a Beatles record that's out of the range of human hearing specifically to annoy your dog! Several tracks on "Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise?" are strange too....just percussive sounds, yelling and synth squalls. Another record that's weird (but I've come to like a little) is "Leave a Message", the opening track on Mary J. Blige's "What's the 411?".....it's a series of phone messages her friends left on her answering machine.

Sorry... "Land Of Ladies" is not an instrumental :-)

And by the way, you should definitely get both "Blam!" and "Light Up the Night" as they are not only the Brothers Johnson's best albums, but also contain some of the finest production work Quincy Jones has ever done. My favorite is actually the "Blam!" album, you haven't lived until you've heard "Ain't We Funkin' Now" and the instrumental "Streetwave"! ;-)

It's not a track, but a simple tone added at the mastering stage to the end of "A Day In The Life". And, at about 14KHz, it's audible to most people. I can hear it.

Oh yes, 'Streetwave' is a fab moody instrumental track! Also, 'Ride-o-Rocket' is brilliant & it's written by Ashford & Simpson - what more could you ask for? They were on a role that year with 'Im Every Woman' for Chaka & 'Stuff Like That' for Quincy plus their own 'It Seems To Hang On'.
