Klassique / Somebody's loving you - a 'classic' originally released in 1983 on the SAM label.

Out of curiousity: anybody else who knows this track?

Yo, Nitro...
It's an OK track but pretty derivative (like so many boogie records of that period) and a little laboured. This was probably the most consistent perod for Sam, though, with Vicky 'D', B.B.C.S. & A., Komiko, Kreamcicle. K.I.D., Steve Shelto and to a lesser extent Sound Troupe getting many plays in the Forrrce household.

My fave of late is Paul Jabara's "Paradise Island". This is a beauty...perfect for that transition from Peak Time to Morning. It starts out tropical, soft and cool...then the beat gets stronger and funkier and it takes you on a journey!!!

A lot of Jabara's stuff is too campy for me ("It's Raining Men", "Never Lose Your Sense Of Humor")...BUT this track is his masterpiece, IMHO.

Produced by Bob Esty, it's available on a Casablanca 12" or LP "Keeping Time" (same long version as 12"); The Casablanca Box Set has an edited version...but the looooong version is the keeper.

Perfect set... "Let's Fly Away" (Voyage); "Paradise Island" (Paul Jabara), "Begin The Beguine" & "Gone, Gone, Gone" (Johnny Mathis); "Love Is In You" (Nightlife Unlimited) and...and....???? Tropical, cool and sexy.... :D

Alfredo De La Fe - "Hot to Trot"

Don't know why I've gotten into this one this week. Sounding really good.

I've been wondering for years --- what is the name of the instrument used in the intro of this song that sounds like a squeaky toy? I can't think of any other way to describe it. I was told it was Brazilian but the person still didn't know what it was called. :x

Though it's not amongst the instruments listed on the sleeve, I think what you're referring to is the cuica. Here's a sample:

Thanks, Forrrce. I think that's it though that sample sounds like nails on a blackboard :x . But I could hear what it should be doing. Do you know how it's pronounced? We would all hear this insrument in so many disco songs and no one could ever tell me what the hell it was.

Cuica = koo-ee-ka or soo-ee-sa or soo-ee-ka or... you get the picture. Trying to figure out if the "C's" are hard of soft.[/code]

NickNack: Can you believe it's actually a drum?! As for the pronunciation, I take my cue from Azymuth's wonderful 'Tamborim, Cuica, Ganza, Berimbau', which although recited at 100 mph, sounds like 'koo-ee-ka' to me!!!
:D

A drum? Unbelievable. I always pictured it as some sort of hand-held thing being rubbed to create those different pitches in the 'squeak'. Thanks. Now all I need is to see someone playing it so I know how they get that sound. They can't be hitting it like a regular drum. Could they... :-? ?

I was puzzled by that as well, so I googled it and found this...
