Default Club Countdown Top Hits (1984-2002)

Here is a track list of my 1984 mixtape. Anyone ever notice that 3 of the biggest Halloween songs of all time were all from 1984? Also, there are two EXCELLENT remixes on here: Hex Hector's Remix of "Give Me Tonight" and Todd Terry's Remix of "Owner of A Lonely Heart." Of the original versions of songs used, my picks are "Jam On It" by Newcleus (the longest track on the mix) and "99 Red Balloons" by Nena.

13. "Radio Ga Ga" (DJ Bobo Remix) - Queen
12. "Jam On It" - Newcleus
11. "Somebody's Watching Me" - Rockwell featuring Michael Jackson
10. "Thriller" - Michael Jackson
09. "Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker, Jr.
08. "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" (Todd Terry Remix) - Yes
07. "Give Me Tonight" (Hex Hector 2000 A.D. Remix) - Shannon
06. "Jump (For My Love)" - The Pointer Sisters
05. "The Glamorous Life" - Shiela E
04. "When Doves Cry" - Prince
03. "99 Red Balloons" - Nena
02. "Let's Hear It For The Boy" - Denise Williams
01. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" - Cyndi Lauper

Really interesting. But I don't think "Thriller" has been issued in 1984.

Can you explain why did you put this track in this mix?

I have several version of "Owner...," but none are known as the Todd Terry Remix. Is this another name for the "Red & Blue mix?" Was this on Atco (US)?

Default "Thriller" in '84

Com King: For all of these mixes in the 70's & 80's (when Dance music regularly made the Billboard charts), I used the dates the song first peaked on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart. For example, if a song hit #1 on Dec 20th 1984, and stayed at #1 until February of the following year, I considered it to belong to 1984, even though it may have actually enjoyed the mojority of it's success in '85. However, in the case of "Thriller," MJ released the album in '82 and it was rather toward the end of it's cycle when the title track was released in '84. Of course, "Thriller" LP lasted quite a bit longer than your average record!

Default "Owner of A Lonely Heart"

Bernie;

I pulled "Owner of A Lonely Heart" from a compilation called "Everybody Dance! Remixed Dance Classics" (an outstanding compilation!). It is on Atlantic/Rhino records from 1998. The liner notes actually list it as "Todd Terry Mix." Hope this helps! BTW, Atlantic had an interesting strategy on this. They actually had FOUR seperate releases under the same title "Everybody Dance." The first is a Maxi Single with 5 tracks, then there are 1, 2 and 3 CD sets. "Owner of A Lonely Heart" is only included on the 2 & 3 CD sets.

Default "Owner..."

Yes, it's an excellent mix. Todd kept some vital elements of the original, such as the famous guitar riff. Keeping the integrity of the original (if the original was worthy) is a key ingredient of a Grade-A remix. Todd Terry Mix clocks in at 129 BPM.

Default Club Countdown Top 17 of 1986!

Mixtape for the biggest Dance/Party hits of '86... Here's a great example of how these mixes sometimes have to deviate from my personal tastes. #1 "Walk Like An Egyptian" is so old and tired and overplayed, but such a huge hit. If you'd asked me in 1986, I'd have said either "West End Girls," "Conga" or "Walk This Way." Now I'd definitely say "Conga," because this particular remix (which didn't come along until 14 years later) is soooo smooth and sweet! Nice jazzy feel to it. I really like this jazzy style of House music. Anyway, the list...

17. "I Can't Wait" - NuShooz
16. "Addicted To Love" - Robert Palmer
15. "Something About You" - Level 42
14. "If You Leave" - Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark
13. "Take My Breath Away" (House The World Remix) - Berlin
12. "West End Girls" (Sasha Remix) - Pet Shop Boys
11. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" - Wang Chung
10. "Venus" - Bananarama
09. "Crush On You" - The Jets
08. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" - Kim Wilde
07. "Two Of Hearts" - Stacey Q
06. "Conga" (Y-Tu Conga Unreleased Remix) - Gloria Estefan
05. "When I Think Of You" (Morales House Mix) -Janet Jackson
04. "How Will I Know" (Junior Vasquez Remix) - Whitney Houston
03. "Rock Me Amadeus" ('91 Remix) - Falco
02. "Walk This Way" - Run DMC feat Aerosmith
01. "Walk Like An Egyptian" - Bangles

Default Club Countdown's Top 13 of 1987!

Living in 1987, nothing could beat Club Nouveu's cover of "Lean On Me." Since that time, I've grown to LOVE "When Smokey Sings" by Abc and "What Have I Done To Deserve This" by The Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield. This remix from the REmix DJ series is a ton of fun!

13. "Tonight Tonight Tonight" (Live) - Genisis
12. "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" (Pure 80's Dance Mix) - Belinda Carlisle
11. "When Smokey Sings" (The Miami Mix) - Abc
10. "Bad" - Michael Jackson
09. "Breakout" (O'Duffy's '92 Mix) -Swing Out Sister
08. "Only In My Dreams" (Junior Vasquez Club Mix) - Debbie Gibson
07. "Come Go With Me" (Club Mix '97 Remix) - Expose'
06. "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" (REmix Mobile Series Nov 97) - Pet Shop Boys feat Dusty Springfield
05. "Open Your Heart" - Madonna
04. "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" - Gloria Estefan
03. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" (Junior Vasquez Remix) - Whitney Houston
02. "Where The Streets Have No Name" - U2
01. "Lean On Me" (Album Version extended w/ Pump It Up Reprise) - Club Nouveau

Default Club Countdown's Top 13 of 1988!

I am seriously considering making a "part B" to 1988 in order to include some favorites of mine that fell below the Top 13, such as Duran Duran's "I Don't Want Your Love" and M/A/R/R/S "Pump Up The Volume." Oh btw, yeah I admit I cheated a little using the Clubtraxx mix (#'s 2-4). I need a break every now & then! A bit of a "sellout" for mixing purposes  This mix does, however contain my FAVORITE SONG OF THE '80's: Pet Shop Boys' "Always On My Mind/In My House."

Club Countdown's Top 13 of 1988
13. "The Way You Make Me Feel" (Acapella & Extended Remix) - Michael Jackson
12. "Parents Just Don't Understand" - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
11. "It Takes Two" - Rob Base & DJ Easy Rock
10. "So Emotional" (David Morales Mix) - Whitney Houston
09. "Love Will Save The Day" (Jellybean & David Morales Mix) - Whitney Houston
08. "Together Forever" - Rick Astley
07. "Never Gonna Give You Up" - Rick Astley
06. "What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)" (Junior Vasquez Blue Zone Club Mix) - Information Society
05. "Always On My Mind/In My House" - Pet Shop Boys
04. "Loco Motion" (Tyler Coleman Clubtraxx Remix) - Kylie Minogue
03. "Dirty Diana" (Tyler Coleman Clubtraxx Remix) - Michael Jackson
02. "Wild Wild West" (Tyler Coleman Clubtraxx Remix) - Escape Club
01. "Need You Tonight" (Live) - INXS

Planning a "Part 2" for this year as well... SO MUCH to pick from! Also, please note that I am unashamedly a Milli Vanilli fan. Whoever performed the music, it was great music. The scandal can't change that fact! And you know what? People inevitable LOVE hearing these songs again! (and it seems as if I am the only one with the guts to do it!)

I agree with you 100%... scandal or no scandal, nobody should be ashamed that they like these songs, although I'm burnt out on them. Looking at it on a business standpoint, they (record company) made millions of $$$$$. The media will always look for something to write whether it's true or untrue.

Default Club Countdown Top 10 of 1990

Volume 2 forthcoming, featuring "Vogue," "Groove Is In The Heart," etc...

This volume of #'s 1-10 (or 10-1) includes some personal favorites like the stellar "Metromix" (DJ Mix) of Vanilla Ice's infamous "Ice Ice Baby" featuring samples (vocals too!) from Queen/David Bowie's "Under Pressure." The samples are absolutely delightful! "The Power" was a long time favorite of mine, as well as the HIGHLY UNDER-RATED "Think" by Information Society. Such was the brilliance of this track that despite it's poor showing on Billboard (#28), I had to include it among my top 10 of the year. From 1990 onward, you will find that I tend to stray (as did dance music as a whole) farther and farther from The Billboard Top 40.

Club Countdown's Top 10 of 1990
10. "Strike It Up" (Dance Mix) - Black Box
09. "Think" (Club Mix) - Information Society
08. "Poison!" (London Style) - Bell Biv Devoe
07. "Black Cat" (1814 LP Version) - Janet Jackson
06. "Sending All My Love" (1990 Club Mix) - Linear
05. "All Around The World" (Metromix) - Lisa Stansfield
04. "Tom's Diner" - DNA featuring Suzanne Vega
03. "The Power" (Original/Single Dub Mix) - Snap!
02. "Ice, Ice Baby" (Metromix) - Vanilla Ice featuring Queen and David Bowie
01. "U Can't Touch This" - MC Hammer
