Default Best From Artist 48 - Prince

And no, I don't give a shit what he goes by now
I gotta give it to Mr. Controversy. I thought he was gay. Then I kept seeing him lined up with all kinds a hotties. I guess behind that diminutive stature lies a 12" personality. Then again, money and artistry work well for babes.
OK, enough of my bullshit. There are 3 songs that fell into the disco scene that worked for me. Since I rarely see Prince mentioned here, I think it's time we recognize  My two runners up are better to me as stand alone songs. They are "Soft & Wet" and "Sexy Dancer." My top pick however is "I Wanna Be Your Lover." I happened to be in Hartford, Connecticut at the time when this song hit it's stride in the clubs. There was a club called the Hideaway that mixed the shit out of this song with "Just A Touch Of Love." The song is great and the mix made it memorable for me.

I love it when dj mixes are remembered. :D
There are so many songs from different decades that I like. None would make my top 30 list tho.
How bout:

Head
I Wanna Be Your Lover (LP)
Sexy Dancer
Let's Work
La La La, He He He
Kiss
Housequake
When Doves Cry
D.M.S.R.
Lady Cab Driver

I Feel For You
Erotic City

of the more recent stuff, I enjoy:
Get Off
Sexy MF
Diamonds and Pearls (I just love Rosie Gaines voice)

Kiss is my favourite track from Prince .

Does anyone know if it has been sampled in a house song? The french duo Kojak plays what sounds to me as a remix of this song in almost all their sets, and I would really like to have this song.

if you have any idea, you're welcome :)

Sexy dancer is my second favourite.

My favorite is the B-side to "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World," entitled "Beautiful." In reality, it is simply the House Remix of "TMBGITW."

Not my favorite artist by a long shot. I once offered a co-worker/musician all my promotional Prince lp's and 12"s. He was a BIG Prince fan and I thought he'd appreciate it. He recorded them and then gave them back, saying I might regret it one day if he kept them.

If he had, my regrets would be:

I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER
WHEN DOVES CRY

The rest is taking up space.

I've never had (and never will have) Prince down as a genius, unlike many. I do rate the following:

'Controversy' (the best)
'Sexy Dancer'
'I Wanna Be Your Lover'
'Mountains'
'Games' (no way is that from 1978!)

+ a promo of 'Uptown' completes my Prince collection.

During the 80's, Prince and Michael Jackson were these mega pop-star heartthrobs and Prince always got my vote. Here's several favorites from him:

Adore
The Beautiful Ones
Pop Life
1999
When Doves Cry
Raspberry Beret
Little Red Corvette
Kiss

Hey Paul this was a good one! I know that there are others that I can't recall at the moment. Btw, I never liked "I Wanna Be Your Lover" :x and it didn't help that my next door neighbor ran it in the hole everyday. Does anyone like The Time (Morris Day)? I heard that Prince and Morris grew up in the same Minneapolis area.

Hey Delight 8)
I'm glad you liked this week's artist.
You being a Prince fan, I'm there are songs like "Sexy M.F.", "I Would Die For You" and "When Doves Cry" that slip by you :)
As for Morris Day, I never got into his shtick. In fact his group along with Andre Cymone(sp) and those of that ilk seemed the antithesis of the macho disco image I was accustomed to. Regardless, there were at least a couple of Time songs I did like. One that I can remember was "Cool" or "I'm So Cool." I think you know the song.

Hey Nicky. I feel you man. Prince definitely has an over inflated view of himself that he makes no effort hiding. How much of "Under The Cherry Moon" could you stomach?
Anyway, with artist you loathe like this one, was it hard to get into mixing their songs?

The title means nothing to me as I have no idea what it sounds like. What does that tell you? :)

"Loathe" is pretty strong but it wasn't any big deal playing his music because I simply didn't. The two Prince records that were on my turntable in any club I worked are the same two I mentioned. Nothing else worked for me and if the crowd wanted to hear him they knew to be somewhere else. That's not me just being cocky, a lot of Prince's music didn't 'fit' where I worked and I wasn't forcing it.

Side story : As much as I ignored his music in the later years, when "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was given out promotionally I was one of the first making a stink of how Warner Bros. only gave it to a 'certain select few', like Larry Levan. I bitched until I got it, but not without a lot of grief. The person doing the distribution at the time looked me up and down when I was introduced in the WB office, approached me with that "And who are you?" attitude :x , along with, "And you work, where"? I was about ready to tell her to ram it when I guess she decided "enough" and gave me the damn vinyl. What a B----!

Interesting side story Nicky. That woman sounded like a real biatch. Now there's one that I would have loved to do a "Lady Cab Driver" on.

Geez, Nicky...

I'm surprised that Prince didn't rock your world!!!

I bought almost everything, I think!!!

Faves NOT mentioned yet:

"EROTIC CITY"
"GIRLS & BOYS" (from "Parade")
"WHEN YOU WERE MINE"
"JACK U OFF"
"LET'S GO CRAZY"
"U GOT THE LOOK" (with Sheena Easton)

And the previously mentioned:

"CONTROVERSY"
"WHEN DOVES CRY"
"CREAM"
"GETT OFF"
& lots more.

Also, he produced some excellent stuff for others. I'll mention Chaka Khan's "Come 2 My House" that I've been listening to recently. It's a shame nothing from this CD was a hit. It was certainly worthy!!!
