Webster Lewis 1942 - 2002

I just found out that Webster Lewis passed away in december 2002 at 59 in his New York home.
Lewis released many disco influenced albums in the 70's including a favorite of mine "On The Town" (1976).
He also toured as a conducter for Love Unlimeted Orchestra and worked as a musical director for Herbie Hancock.

Webster Lewis is best remembered in the UK for 'Welcome Aboard', one of the biggest tracks played on the Jazz-Funk scene during 1981.

I'm sure people like Jazz_Pilgrim will share my own happy memories of this tune.

Very sad to hear of his death.

I will best remember him for two tracks which made their mark in the clubs ...

the rare BARBARA ANN from his 1978 LP "Touch My Love". A rare jazz funk classic ,big in the clubs, that was really hard if not impossible to find ....

and then there was EL BOBO from the LP "Let Me Be The One" in 1980. A nice Latin feel to that one ...

I don't recall Welcome Aboard - that was when I was out of the country I guess...

Respect to Webster Lewis - although he never achieved commercial success his music had a well-deserved loyal following amongst the UK jazz funk fans ....
