I'm not 100% sure of where I heard that the Whatnauts weren't on Girls, though. I can't find a good reference on the internet pointing to that. I can say that from repeated listening, and being familiar with the vocalists in the Whatnauts from their earlier albums, it just sounds like Harry Ray and maybe another member of the Moments singing co-lead. | Here's the flip side to Monster from The Rimshots. It's credited to The Whatnauts called 'Soul Walking'. The 45 was released in 1974, but they probably left Stang in '72, so maybe this was in the can for a couple of years. One clue that it might have been done earlier by the same producer, George Kerr, was the way the strings pan across the channels. If you listen to the first three LPs they did with him, he seemed to enjoy panning strings, and vocals from channel to channel quite a bit. Did it get any club play? It seems to have all the elements for a proto-disco mix. By the way, I remembered who the house band was before the Rimshots. It was Willie and the Mighty Magnificents. Rimshots took over in 1972. check the opening: 1st male voice: "Hey Whatnauts, what's happening?" 2nd male voice: "The Moments. What it is, brotha." 1st male voice: "Hey let's talk about what we talk about best." 2nd male voice: "What's that?" 1st male voice: "Girls" 2nd male voice: "Right on." Then one singer-- "Moments"-- sings two lines solo Then it's two voices singing the lead--granted one is more prominent in the mix--but on my stereo I hear a different voice coming from each speaker... Then later one they trade the lines: #1: "Super Fine." #2: Mighty Fine" #1: Sugar "n' Spice" #2: "Everything nice." Ha-Ha Maybe you have a different mix?

| Not that I don't believe there are two singers, I don't think they're members of the Whatnauts. And I read it somewhere that it was pretty much all The Moments on that recording. I do remember the intro when they say 'Moments' 'Whatnauts', but there are three members of The Moments, so any one of them could have been part of that call and response, if you call it that. The Whatnauts had two lead singers, one who sang a gruff lower lead, while the other was a somewhat piercing falsetto. I can't hear either guy on the Girls recording. Unless they had a change in membership between 73 and 74. Edit: I was able to find at least one place where someone mentions that the Whatnauts may not be on the recording. I'm surprised this hasn't been officially confirmed with members of The Moments or Whatnauts in interviews. http://www.soul-patrol.com/soul/moments.htm "More teaming up would take place in the later part of 1974, with the Moments and the Whatnauts on their hit "Girls". The song was a hit the minute the DJ's dropped the needle on the wax. Legend has it that the Whatnauts don't appear vocally on the song, that it's just theMoments singing. Regardless, it's still a smoker, chalked up by the group or groups." Disco Funk |

| Thanks for that Barbara Acklin track, DJ Dan. I never heard that one before. I like how it starts with a melody that almost anyone, including myself, can easily play on piano - Chopsticks. :) The music credits for that song indicate that it was 'directed' by Quentin Joseph, at least according to discogs. I think that might be the same guy credited as the MFSB drummer in the late 70s. Acklin's record was released through Brunswick, so I think it's an example of Chi-Town disco/dance. Here's another example from the same year, by another Chicago guy, Willie Henderson. You must be familiar with this one! And here's an early Patrick Adams production from 1972. He must have been inspired by the philly sound. Eventually he'd record in philly, but I think this was a New York production. It wasn't on their LP from the same sessions, they just stuck it on the flip side of a 45. Disco Funk |
