I am sticking to the 45's because that is what we were laying down BITD.
So here is my next tune for your ears - -Chairman of the Board -
"FINDERS KEEPERS" 1974

Hi Dan, Another great choice with another great vocalist - General Johnson

Disco Funk - I think we are talking about the same thing. Its the persistent cymbal played on the 1 and 3 with the bass drum on the 2 and 4. Hope that makes sense coz I'm no drummer so apologies to all drummers !! I'll try to check out some of the tunes you mention.

Getting back to the Disco 7s, heres one from the New Jersey sound.

scientist - not familiar with the Rimshots- that was a nice tune, I would have played that back then, thanks for the turn on!

Here is an absolute favorite of mine from 1972 - I remember buying two copies of this album and then finding the 45 later. Anyway, an absolute classic from BITD - Barabas - -"Woman"

Yup, I think we're on the same wavelength. I don't know the actual drumming term for it either, but I like to call it the bouncing hi-hat because that's what it's doing. :)

That Rimshots track is a great one. I never get tired of listening to it. What's even more interesting is that it's not the only recording using that backing track. Hank Ballard also had it on his Stang LP, under the title Nite People. There were two versions - a vocal and instrumental, except the instrumental isn't the same mix as the Rimshots version. It doesn't have the psychedelic rock guitar throughout.

Here's another oldie I like to listen to alot, and the 12inch version is a collectable

We just get to keep knowing each other when we see the taste in music.
So, Dfunk, I am surprised by your post of "Marboo". You see how we learn about each other. Great choice.

To continue - here is the second cut off the Barabas album from BITD.

Wild Safari - 1972 Just loved the Bongo/conga intro and worked the hell out of it with 2 copies.

I like that Wild Safari track. I think I learned about that one about a decade ago. Did you ever play Kongas? They had an LP, but they also had a 45. I always thought they kind of sounded like Barrabas. They were Cerrone's original group. This cut named Jungle, was on a mono 45. I don't remember the flip side. My guess is that there were DJs who liked to mix this and Wild Safari together.

Here's another cut by Kongas. I love the build up in the intro. I don't know if this was released on 45.

Hi Dan, I've read that Barrabas were big in the early/ mid 70's. Unfortunately, there was little room for music like this at the height of disco in the late 70's.

DiscoFunk - The Marboo tune is new to me so thanks for that. The lp versions of the 2 Kongas tunes are much longer. Anikana is 10 min. The back cover says a Tom Moulton mix and thanks Larry Washington and Salsoul so I guess theres a Philly link somewhere. The All-Platinum/Stang/Turbo sound is another favourite. I love the drum sound which is very distinctive. Was there a house band called the Whatnauts ?

Heres another group who had a latin influence. The clip ends abruptly

The Whatnauts had a big crossover hit in '75 called 'Girls'. It was a collaboration with the Moments, you must've heard it. It's a classic & one of my all-time faves.

I learned about that Marboo tunes through Ebay. A lot times, I will be browsing auctions, and thankfully some sellers will post audio samples. Ebay has been as much of an educational tool for discovering old disco as any other resource, if you can believe that!

I was under the assumption that youtube posting of Anikana-O was the original mix. Kongas released an LP in 1974, but in 1977, Tom Moulton grabbed several tracks from that LP and remixed them. Philly regular Larry Washington augmented the percussion for that project. However, the originals were already percussion heavy!

Stang/All Platinum/Turbo were all under the control of Sylvia Robinson. She's the one who became famous for Pillow Talk in the 70s, but also recorded as part of Mickey & Sylvia in the 50s or early 60s. She also later started up Sugar Hill Records. I'm not sure who the first house band was, but eventually the Rimshots took over. By '76, however, another group called Wood Brass & Steel were alternates. If you listen to her Lay It On Me LP from '77, you can see the credits on the back show she recorded half the LP with one group, half with the other. The Whatnauts were just a vocal group who were produced by George Kerr (who went on to produce the famous breakbeat LP Skull Snaps for the group of the same name). Even though there are recordings through Sylvia Robinson's labels credited to them from '74 (Soul Walking) and '75 (Girls), I think they were only involved with the label until '72. Girls, for instance, only has The Moments on there, even though it's credited to Moments and Whatnauts, with Harry Ray of The Moments on lead.

Here's a live version from Top Of the Pops (Sorry DJ Dan for the tangent!), not using the Rimshots backing track/band.

Disco Funk

That's interesting DF. How odd to credit it to an artist when they aren't on the record.
