Yes my friend scientist, I did encounter Northern Soul on my visits to the UK. Piece of cake, just took the jams and dazzled them with remixing the 45's. Actually, a famous DJ I became friends with loved what I did with the 45's. His name is Froggy (rip)

OK "Peoples Choice", an absolute JAM from BITD, always made my tables!!! Great Pick!!!

Here is another Old School jam from 1973. Kool & the Gang "Jungle Boogie"

Ha ha. I bet some of the Northern Soul fans were shocked !

It was very sad to read about Froggy - he was only 58. He says his visit to NY in the late 70's amazed him and he tried to bring those techniques back to the UK

Love the Kool and the Gang tune - a great clip from Soul Train as well

Heres one that shows the variety of music from bitd.

Scientist,
Not to blow my horn, but yes, the fans were amazed. I remember playing at a place in Blackburn called Peppermint Place. There was a LARGE Contigent of NS fans who actually (most of them) stopped dancing just to watch me go nuts with "Ask Me". And with that said, I am loving that I can bring to you Ecstsy, Passion & Pain "Ask Me" 1974

YouTube - Ecstasy, Passion & Pain - Ask Me

Never to forget my friend Froggy it was a sad day when he was gone. He had one of the most incredible sound systems in the UK. By the way, he first came to the US in 1980.

Hi Dan,
A great pair of Philly tunes. "Ask me" sound like more drumming from Earl Young and a great lead vocal.

Heres the Invitations with more Philly magic.

Do you still DJ these days ?

Yes, Earl Young was the main philly drummer until about 1974 when other guys started being used, like Charles Collins, who took over as the MFSB main drummer by the Philadelphia Freedom album in PIR. I think Ecstasy Passion & Pain had their own self contained group when playing live, but in the studio, the MFSB guys were used. There were very few self-contained groups who recorded at Sigma during the disco era with their own musicians. Sound Experience, Anglo Saxon Brown, Soul Survivors and Instant Funk (who were also MFSB when Sigler produced PIR recordings) are a few I can think of.

The disco era, as far as I'm concerned, was kicked off when Earl Young tried to copy Al Jackson's drumming on Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together', by augmenting the snare with a Tom hit on the same beat when he drummed on 'I'll Be Around' by The Spinners. That track and 'Could It Be I'm Falling In Love' were the first instances of that style of drumming, which eventually developed into four on the floor.

I've posted a few other Philly cuts from 1972 that ushered in the disco era in the past, like these ones:

This is the Tom Moulton remix of Rubber Band from 1975, but it sounds almost exactly like the 1972 mix, just slightly sped up, in stereo, and with an instrumental section added.

Here's another one I forgot, it's a non-LP track from The Intruders. It has the marching groove that was used on tracks like Family Affair by MFSB, and Love Train by The O'Jays.

This little ditty also had the same type of groove (I mentioned this in another thread a while ago). This was the original group that McFadden & Whitehead were in.

Hi Disco Funk

Thanks for the info in your posts - and some great tunes as well ! The style of drumming on MFSB - TSOP is very different to the 2 styles in your posts yet that tune came only a year later in 1973. I think I read somewhere that Earl Young invented that cymbal sound whilst recording 'Zing went the strings of my heart'.

When you say the 'cymbal sound', do you mean the flying or bouncing hi-hat in the intro? I've heard it on tracks before, like Sly & The Family Stone, but they used a syncopated beat. Sam & Dave used it on a cut from '67 or '68, but I can't remember the track. Bernard Purdie was also using it, but just with a kick drum, on that Jimmy McGriff LP Electric Funk, but that was a funk record. You can also hear Bernard using it in the intro to Rock Steady from 1972. But Earl was the first one to apply it to the 'disco beat'. He used it on this cut, which came out even before TSOP, in Feb or March of '73
