Default Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Part #3: January 8, 1977

By The Numbers......

THE DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS TOP 40--PURELY BY POINTS:

Using the chart data from all 16 charts, including Montreal. Based solely on point totals of individual titles; in cases of point ties, the title on more charts gets precedence--if # of charts is the same, it's in alphabetical order.

Legend: (B) = bundled with other titles by Billboard; (B/U) = "Bubbling Under the Top 40"
* = debut/ (R) = Return
Perfect score = 240 maximum points (15 points for a #1 x 16 charts)

OK, now let's check to see where this week's charted items rank in the
DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ......

[first posted in the 3/26/76 column]

The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of
1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979)

thanks, Marky, for the "Coming Soon" list . . . now I have "Let Lady Luck smile, Let Lady Luck smile, Let Lady Luck ... smile on me!" stuck in my brain. (Fortunately, it's a tune I like ).

Hurray!!!

it's

1977 !!! ........ (already )

Let's hope its as glorious a disco year as 1976 turned out to be .
But even as disco now seems to be firmly finding its legs , some industry killjoys are even now already foretelling disco's destined demise !! ..... BUT I DON'T BELIEVE IT !!!!! .
And I can't wait to see what all's a coming down the disco track this year !!

SO, HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone as I listen to The Salsoul Orchestra's New Year's Medley off their latest release:

oh remmy. questions already?

Thelma has yet to be discovered in 2 cities: one city is in the USA and pretty consistently produces the weirdest & most often repeated charts (now that Denver has been dropped) and the other is in another country. Hint. Hint.

They both sit at the back of the weekly city chart list bus, but eventually get on board the Houston train in a few weeks time.....

...and, interestingly, Thelma will then be the second artist to achieve the elusive all 16 charts reporting in a single week. Happens two weeks in a row for her, in fact. [Anyone recall who the first one was???]

Ironically, it occurs as she slips down to #2 while she still has more points than the #1 record. All will be revealed....

OK, I was a tad snarkilicious last night, wasn't I?

Remmy, the 2 cities not charting Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" are: 1) Seattle & 2) Montreal.

Seattle charts Thelma in a couple weeks; Montreal adds her just as she slips to #2--so, at that point, Thelma has all 16 charts reporting her for 2 weeks. The only other record to achieve all 16 charts in a single week thus far, nationally, is the Bee Gees for "You Should Be Dancing."

See I can play nice.

RE: This week's oddball new entry:
37) * BLACK JACK - Tender Aggression (Phoenix)

Tender Aggression is the name of a cut on their LP (& is where the group name is derived from ?????? ) ....while the LP's title , FLY DISCO FLY ( no song with that title on LP) , seems to be aimed at capitalizing on another German disco success story .

It is charting now: January 1977, but apparently it was recorded almost a year prior, in February & May of 1976 at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg Germany .

AFAIK this project is Dieter Reith's one splash into the 70's disco pool .

Jussi, I can't find it on Youtube (other tracks by the artist [real name: George Thurston] are there, however.)

There are brief samples here: some vocal on #1; instrumental on #10

"Loin d'Ici" also appears on this LP done in tandem with the girly group Toulouse...
