say that Jackson told him that he'd borrowed the idea for "Billie Jean"'s bass line from "I Can't Go For That". Except for both songs having funky bass lines I hadn't really made the connection (Hall seemed quite pleased to reveal this), but when I heard Billy Ocean's "Carribean Queen" I knew INSTANTLY where THAT song's bass line came from.

The notes are different, but the feel is the same in both tracks.

If you want to get into the more obvious borrowings of the early 80s, look no further than Huey Lewis and Ray Parker Jr

When Billie Jean came out I remember a reviewer at the time said it had a Steely Dan/Hall & Oates feel!

Disco Funk
MJ's "Wanna be startin' somethin'" and Manu Dibango's "Soul makossa" too.

Typical Daryl Hall , not especially modest (to say the least).

You're on to something...
Remember the 1983 single called "Do It Again (Medley with Billie Jean)" by Club House?

michael jackson was a fantastically, talented individual who will be sadly missed. I did not hear the Daryl Hall tribute, but heard tributes from several other celebs including Mark Lester, Uri Geller and the like.

I simply loved his music and followed him from his Jackson 5 days onwards.

He was a musical legend.

Michael RIP

And Lionel Richie was very inspired by "Wanna be starting something" when he created "Can't slow down".

I'd forgotten about that one Bernie! The 2 songs were very cleverly mixed together I thought.
