Default What would you go for first?

While I was out hunting around for second hand vinyl and CDs over the weekend just past, I found that when contronted with a rack of 12-inch singles and a rack of CDs side-by-side, I instinctively went to look at the rack of 12-inch singles first. It seems with me that old habits die hard! I suppose I am hoping to find an original gem from the mid-70s, and I reckon there is more chance of finding something in the vinyl rack than the cd's rack. It always seems to be the case that the cd's consist of more modern music than 70T's...

What would you do? Would you go for the CDs or vinyl first?

Assuming the same track is available on both formats, I'd go for CDs first, 'cos I just can't stand the snap, crackle and pop of vinyl nowadays. However, most of the 12"s I'd be interested in are probably only on vinyl anyway, so naturally I'd snap any of them up. Trouble is there are no really good second hand shops in this area.

Fair comment, Quinny. I think I would go for the CD over vinyl to avoid the crackles etc. One annoying thing with a lot of CD covers is that they leave the times of the tracks off, and you cannot tell if you have the full length version or not.

BTW, this occurred when I was at a car boot sale yesterday.

Jazz,

No question about it, if I see or smell vinyl then I go straight to it. CD's be damned even though I will quickly thumb through them after going through the vinyl.

I generally agree with Bernie here. If the vinyl is in at least good shape, I'll take it first. I am assuming of course that your analog play back is at least above average. If not then you'd better get the cd.

Vinyl if I'm looking for old tracks I remember and want. CD if I'm looking for some of my Smooth Jazz favorites and compilations of classic stuff.

I'd go for the cd's too if we're talking about the same releases as on vinyl.
I've never been a DJ & I really don't care about first pressings, picturediscs and all that. I just wanna listen to the music and the cd is the easiest way to do so. However if a cd's not available I ain't afraid of vinyl.

somehow it's funnier looking for old vinyl. Sometimes people think you're crazy searching through an old pile of (what they consider) worthless vinyl junk.
Ooohh..if they only knew
