Default Best From Artist 40 - The Whispers

Well Quinny, I hope these guys are more up your alley. By the way, I like MFSB and Salsoul equally. Just different flavors. Like chocolate and vanilla :)
OK so back to The Whispers, a classic soul band that made a smooth transition into disco. My pick from them is "Imagination." Of course "And The Beat Goes On" will also rank very high. I can still hear the djs remixing "and the beat goes, and the beat goes, and the beat goes, and the beat goes, and the beat goes on...."

Nice Choice, Paul.
About time this group gets some respect. They are so much more than "And The beat Goes On" & It's A Love Thing.

My Favorites are:

Let's Go All the Way (1978)
Imagination (1980)
Tonight (1983)
Contagious (1984)
Rock Steady (1987)...isn't it funny that the first real hit produced by LA / Babyface was also the best they ever made?

These are the uptempo tracks, but the Whispers have also done some very impressive ballads and even a Christmas album that's actually quite good.

I don't remember that many records by the Whispers, sooo I guess they weren't one of my fave bands, although they were very productive over a long time frame and I must have quite a few 12" singles by them.
One For The Money was a record I quite enjoyed for its then danceability and happy overall sound.
And The Beat Goes On was a real anthem in the UK and will always have a place in my heart. It's A Love Thing was probably more to my liking though as it was slightly harder.
I quite liked Contagious, but quite frankly Solar label mates Dynasty and Shalamar scored much bigger overall for me.
Rock Steady was just at the time when I stopped DJing and therefore I never got into it.
This is a strange one indeed. I feel as if I ought to be able to put down lots and lots of titles 'cos one would have thought the Whispers were a mega band, but they just won't come to me. There you are jazz, a perfect opening for you!!

I have some of their songs on MP3 and have their 1979 self-titled LP which has some great disco/funk dance tracks on them. My number one favourite song of theirs would have to be "One For The Money" from 1976. It is SOOOO FUNKY with the thumpin bass guitar and drums and what I love most of all about that song is the bit where they go "'D' and an 'I' and a 'S' and a 'CO'.......'D' and an 'I' and a 'S' and a 'CO'.......'D' and an 'I' and a 'S' and a 'CO' etc..." :D and also the bass/drums solo after it. It is a GREAT piece of disco/funk! :D

The killer cut from the Whispers, as far as I am concerned, was the gloriously soulful uptempo Can't Do Without Love from their LP Whispers In Your Ear.

A tune that was picked up by the DJs in London and the Home Counties (including Greg Edwards) and became a massive club record - it is what 70T's summers were all about! Worth checking out!

Other Whispers favourite of mine:
And The Beat Goes On
It's A Love Thing
My Girl
Let's Go All The Way
Headlights

and some of their slow jams...

:)

"OLIVIA" "Lost and turned out.."
Hello... anyone?
The Whispers were on the Tom Joiner Morning Show just a couple of days ago. I wonder what the twins look like now?!

Paul, see my reply to your Cameo post if you haven't already.

Hi Lean. I guess there must be some cosmic connection thing going on. I've heard of the Tom Joyner show but I've never listened to it. I don't think it's on in San Diego.
So why do I get the feeling there's a story behind you liking "(Olivia) Lost and Turned Out" ?
Oh...I did read your reply in the Cameo post. Did this neanderthal miss something? :o

Paul, no nothing special. I think I was just pleased with myself for knowing a couple of songs that most white women would not know! (Or white men for that matter!)

Hi Paul :P

The Whispers weren't one of my favorite groups. As a matter of fact, I never owned any of their albums/cds etc....
It seems like everyone else around me found enjoyment in their music. Just for fun I'm gonna go along with this thread and pick the two hits from the Whispers that was okay:

Lost & Turned Out
In The Raw
