First of all
Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies for their 2008 championship .

The Phillies are the oldest continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of American professional sports.

Now wait ! before I continue .... I can sense Videoskooter's got his finger on the edit button about now. But not so fast VS .... please let me continue . I've got a good reason for placing this topic here in the 70s/80s Disco Music forum .

Here's how and why :

This is the first time since disco year 1980 that the Philadelphia Phillies have been in the World Series .

Back then, facing Kansas City, the Phillies won their first world championship in six games, thanks to the timely hitting of Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose. Schmidt, who was the National League MVP for the entire 1980 season, also won the World Series MVP finals award on the strength of his 8-for-21 hitting (.381 average), including game-winning hits in Game 2 and the clinching Game 6.

Thus, the Phillies became the last of the 16 teams that made up the major leagues from 1901 to 1961 to win a World Series

That fall offered quite a thrilling occasion for the City of Brotherly Love . Their baseball team formed way back in the 1880's was finally possibly going to have a turn as World Champs !!

OK OK .....still ..... what's the disco connection ??

Well, as part of the excitement back then in 1980 , a very famous disco tune was reworked by its original makers and re-released to pay tribute to that baseball team's way overdue success.

OK disco champs ... here's the final question here in Disco Jeopardy , in the unlikely category of Sports ....

I'm with you, man! Phils are awesome. With the last Phillies victory in '80, the disco era came crashing down. Maybe with their new victory in '08, a new era of dance dominance will begin???

there may be more of a disco connection with the phillies ,when i worked in a record shop in the mid 70s when the imports arrived amongst them was 'phillies fever' by the phillies so they had their own disco record as i remember we never sold a copy

I'm glad the Phillies won the NL championship, twice in a row, how about that?

Sorry to disappoint though, but I'm a diehard Yankee fan! If they make the AL champs it'll be a NJ TPKE World Series, and I hope the Bombers put this game to rest tonight.
